My 10 year old son and his two friends attended a 2 hour fantastic basketball camp on Martin Luther King Jr．Day．A few minutes before the session ended，there was a shooting contest．Only a few kids were chosen to compete，and my son was not one of them．The contest winners received prizes and recognition，as did a few kids chosen as “all stars” for effort，skill and participation．Again，my son was not selected．
My son was struggling to deal with his disappointment．
At the camp，he played a basketball game with kids he had never met，guarded them fiercely and took shots easily against them．As his mom，I was thrilled that he spent the day without his tablet．All in all，the day felt wonderful．The last thing I wanted was for these awards to ruin the experience．
I decided to simplify it for him．I did the math and figured out the shooting contest and awards were about 6% of the total camp．The rest of the camp，the parts that he enjoyed，were 94% of the day．Even though the kid loves math，it was hard for him to see the contests and awards as a small part of his day．

Our species' incredible capacity to quickly acquire words from 300 by age 2 to over 1，000 by age 4 isn't fully understood．Some cognitive scientists and linguists have theorized that people are born with built in expectations and logical constraints (約束) that make this possible．Now，however，machine learning research is showing that preprogrammed assumptions aren't necessary to swiftly pick up word meanings from minimal data．
A team of scientists has successfully trained a basic artificial intelligence model to match images to words using just 61 hours of naturalistic footage (鏡頭) and sound previously collected from a child named Sam in 2013 and 2014．Although it's a small slice of a child's life，it was apparently enough to prompt the AI to figure out what certain words mean．
The findings suggest that language acquisition could be simpler than previously thought．Maybe children “don't need a custom built，high class language specific mechanism” to efficiently grasp word meanings，says Jessica Sullivan，an associate professor of psychology at Skidmore College．“This is a really beautiful study，” she says，because it offers evidence that simple information from a child's world view is rich enough to kick start pattern recognition and word comprehension．
The new study also demonstrates that it's possible for machines to learn similarly to the way that humans do．Large language models are trained on enormous amounts of data that can include billions and sometimes trillions of word combinations．Humans get by on orders of magnitude less information，says the paper's lead author Wai Keen Vong．With the right type of data，that gap between machine and human learning could narrow dramatically．
Yet additional study is necessary in certain aspects of the new research．For one，the scientists acknowledge that their findings don't prove how children acquire words．Moreover，the study only focused on recognizing the words for physical objects．
Still，it's a step toward a deeper understanding of our own mind，which can ultimately help us improve human education，says Eva Portelance，a computational linguistics researcher．She notes that AI research can also bring clarity to long unanswered questions about ourselves．“We can use these models in a good way，to benefit science and society，” Portelance adds．

What time is it on the moon

My husband Kenny and I grew up playing sports．We both worked in the field of physical education and coached youth high school track and field．So，Kenny and I weren't surprised when our daughter，Becky，showed early athletic promise．
Watching her outrun other kids on the playground，I knew she was destined for winning medals on the track．Slowly but surely，track took over our lives．Weekends were devoted to training．We stopped taking vacations so the girl wouldn't miss any practice．We missed her birthdays and family outings．I even restricted the time she could spend hanging out with her friends，which would consume the energy she needed for the competition．
We didn't really ask Becky if that was what she wanted．Of course she did! Who wouldn't want to use a God given talent to the fullest Occasionally，Becky would open up after a loss，“I wish you were the same even if I have a bad day on the track．I feel like you don't accept me just for who I am．”
Honestly，that hurt．In my heart，I knew what she said was true．I could behave more like a coach than a mom on the sidelines．But I didn't mind．Ensuring her winning on the track was my only goal．I probably cared more about the medals than she did．By the time Becky started middle school，our family life had revolved around (以……為中心) practices and competitions．I had visions of college scholarships，maybe even the Olympics．
