In 2018, 12-year-old Damian Earley was walking his dog when he noticed garbage cans knocked over by the wind, spilling trash onto the streets of his Columbus neighborhood. Disturbed by the environmental damage, he was inspired to create The Garbage Lot, a heavy platform with a locking mechanism to keep trash cans upright (直立). His invention won the “Industry Innovator Award” at Ohio’s Invention Convention and later earned first place at the national level.
Damian’s path as an inventor was shaped by his participation in the Ohio Invention League (the OIL), a nonprofit that provides free STEM education to K-12 students. Through hands-on invention competitions, he learned to “sell” his invention to judges. Writing and crafting his presentation helped sharpen his communication skills and practice entrepreneurship (創(chuàng)業(yè)), which are crucial for the future employment market where students will likely work in jobs that have not yet been created.
Damian’s teachers, particularly Sarah Priebe, admired his strong work ethic. She recalled Damian’s exceptional oral presentation in eighth grade, “You can tell he put a lot of time and practice into it. Many gifted students don’t seem to need to work as hard to excel at school, but he is always engaged and ready.”
Elena and Zavier, Damian’s siblings, followed in his footsteps, creating their own inventions and receiving awards. Elena, 14, developed a device to remove bad smells from washing machines, while 11-year-old Zavier invented a drone for people with limited mobility. Their father, Matt, shared that watching the invention process take place had changed how he addressed issues in his vinyl records (黑膠唱片) business.
24. What drove Damian to create The Garbage Lot
A. His attention to neighborhood safety. B. The mess caused by fallen trash cans.
C. His interest in environmental science. D. The need for an invention competition.
25. How does the OIL program prepare students for future jobs
A By providing paid STEM education. B. By creating jobs that haven’t existed.
C. By promoting entrepreneurial thinking. D. By selling invention presentation skills.
26. What quality of Damian impressed his teachers
A. Commitment. B. Intelligence. C. Curiosity. D. Leadership.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Damian’s siblings’ inventions are more practical than his.
B. The invention process has influenced the whole family’s way of thinking.
C. Damian’s father plans to apply his children’s inventions to his business.
D. Damian’s siblings only followed his example for the sake of awards.

Tourists across China have enjoyed a chain of cultural events from traditional to modern, and discovered new destinations during this year’s five-day May Day holiday.
Items on China’s traditional intangible cultural heritage list proved to be popular with travelers in many regions. In Lantian county, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, tourists were amazed by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中鋼絲) walking in the Uygur language. Meanwhile, in east China’s Changzhou City, music festivals attracted huge crowds of travelers, and local authorities introduced measures to ensure the comfort of visitors. They arranged 500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up more than 10,000 free parking spaces and extended the operation hours of the subway network until 11:30 p. m.
And it’s not just big cities that drew in visitors during this holiday. Holiday makers decided to go for natural views, less-crowded scenic spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from Chinese travel booking platform Ctrip showed that orders for fourth-tier and below cities increased by 140 percent on a yearly basis, outperforming those in first and second-tier cities.
Wu Sa, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, expressed belief that the popularity of usual major destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu is not decreasing, but explained that a good number of travelers are looking to diversify the range of their travels, towards new and previously lesser-known places.
Scientific and space projects have also been a hit travel destination this week, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China to the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in the southwestern province of Guizhou. “I mainly wanted to take my child to appreciate some of China’s leading space technology and the development trend of big data, so that he can understand the advanced technology of our motherland,” said a tourist named Hu Wannping.
28. What attracted tourists to the Changzhou City
A. The launch of appealing music festivals.
B. The Aerial tightrope walking performance.
C. The celebration of traditional cultural events.
D. The measures to provide comfort for tourists.
29. What may account for people’s choice of fourth-tier and below cities
A Abundant parking spaces. B. Famous scenic spots.
C. Low travelling expenses. D. Convenient booking platforms.
30. What can be inferred from the text
A. The growth of visitors is causing various social issues.
B. Scientific and space projects receive the least attention.
C. Orders for major destinations in big cities are decreasing.
D. Tourists are open-minded as to the choices of spending holidays.
31. What can be the best title of the text
A. Festivals and Celebrations across China B. New Trend for Labor Day Tourist Destinations

Virtual reality (VR) technology from video games and GPS-like apps is now entering hospitals, helping doctors work more safely and successfully. Dr. Ryan Broderick, a doctor at the University of California San Diego, recently tested Apple’s Vision Pro headset with “spatial (空間的) computing” during surgeries (外科手術(shù)), becoming one of the first doctors in the U. S. to try this technology.
“With these headsets, we can project medical images into the real world of the surgery room,” Broderick explains. “We can make screens as big as a wall or adjust them to the perfect position.” This technology mixes digital images with real-world views, letting doctors see 3D models of a patient’s body — like where a tumor (腫瘤) is — almost like giving them Xray view.
In the past, doctors had to frequently turn their heads to check screens during complex surgeries, leading to neck and shoulder pain. Now, spatial computing shows all key information right in front of their eyes. “It works like a car direction system — highlighting danger areas or warning us to avoid important areas,” says Broderick.
The tech also helps train new doctors. Teachers can use virtual screens to show body structures, point out key areas with glowing arrows, or even draw where to make cuts on a 3D heart model. “Students can watch the teacher’s virtual explanations, which is clearer than reading textbooks!” Broderick adds. This hands-on learning helps trainees master skills faster.
Top U. S. hospitals like Johns Hopkins are already testing similar systems. Though the equipment is expensive and needs software improvements, Broderick remains hopeful: “This isn’t just new tools — it’s a revolution in healthcare. In 10 years, technology like this could help millions get better treatment.” From video games to life-saving surgeries, VR is proving that cool tech can truly change lives.
32. How can headsets help with surgeries according to paragraph 2
A. By making the surgery room brighter. B. By letting doctors avoid looking at screens.
C. By helping patients stay calm during surgery. D. By showing 3D pictures of the patient’s body.
33. What is one of the benefits of using VR for doctors
A. It allows them to perform surgeries without any help.
B. It reduces physical stress and potential job-related pain.
C. It enables them to communicate directly with patients.
D. It allows them to work without any medical images.
34. What is Broderick’s attitude toward VR’s future in healthcare
A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. What Is the Future of VR in Hospitals B. How Is VR Changing the World of Surgery
C. What Are the Challenges of VR in Hospitals D. Why Is VR Technology Important for Patients

For those students in city, the road to school might mean the convenience of their dad’s cars, where the heater keeps them comfortable and the radio plays music. But for Tom, who lived in a remote village, it meant a dangerous journey through strong winds and piles of snow.
It was a cold morning. The snow blanketed every rooftop and weighed on the branches of big trees. Tom woke up early, with the howling wind outside his small cabin (小木屋). He put on lots of clothes, including his thickest wool socks and warmest coat. As he was about to go, there was a knock on the door. It’s his classmate Peter in the same village. “Hey, Tom,” Peter said. “Do you think we should go to school today ” “I know it’s tough,” Tom replied, looking at the heavy snow outside, “but missing school means we’ll fall behind.” Finally, they decided to go to school.
The snow had been falling for days, building up on the narrow path that led to school. Tom and Peter stepped out into the snowstorm, with boots sinking deep into the snow. Tom used his arms to push the snow away, and his heart was pounding as he worked hard. He fell down a few times, but each time he got up again. “I must go to school!” Tom said firmly. Thinking about the other kids in the village who insisted on going to school, he knew they were facing the same challenge. But they were all trying to learn and grow.
The wind had blown snow all over the path, making it hard to see where they were going. Not far away, Tom heard someone crying from behind a tree. “Peter, do you hear that ” Tom asked in a puzzled tone. “Let’s go and have a look.” Peter answered.

【小作文答案】
Smart Use of AI Tools
Dear fellow students
With the rapid development of AI technologies, many of us are using such tools as ChatGPT or DeepSeek to search for answers to our schoolwork, which not only harms our learning but also affects our thinking.
Therefore, I advocate using AI wisely in our study. For example, we can use it to explain complex concepts, improve our drafts, or generate study questions when necessary. In a word, it should be used to promote learning rather than replacing it.
Let’s try to be smart users of AI and use it to enhance our learning, not to shortcut our education.
【讀后續(xù)寫答案】One possible version:
As they got closer, they spotted that it was their classmate, Sarah. She huddled against a tree, struggling to keep warm, obviously injuring her ankle. Without hesitation, Tom helped her up cautiously. But the ground was so slippery that he stumbled and nearly fell to the ground. Tom and Peter took turns to carry Sarah on their backs. Overwhelmed with heartfelt gratitude, she couldn’t utter a word. Exhausted as they were, they didn’t stop. The snow grew heavier, but with friends by their sides, all of them felt something warm inside.
After a long journey, they finally arrived at the school gate. The snow glistened in the light as they walked into the warm classroom, where their classmates and teacher were waiting for them anxiously. The teacher gave them a thumbs up and Sarah said, “I couldn’t thank you enough.” Touched deeply, the class burst into thunderous applause with smiles and cheers. The snowflakes were still swirling but the cozy atmosphere filled the classroom. It suddenly dawned on Tom that despite all the challenges, a small act of kindness is like a warm breeze blowing into everyone’s heart, which melted the ice and made a difference.
