Knowing what had happened, Mr Reed asked Mo to look up in the next exam and nod if she saw that Terry
had his phone out. As the history exam began, Mo sat in silence, trying to focus on the paper in front of her. Yet her
mind was distracted. Around twenty minutes in, she noticed movement from the corner of her eye. Terry had once
again taken out his phone, resting it just beneath the desk, eyes shifting between it and his paper. Mo hesitated, but
quickly remembered what Mr. Reed had told her. Taking a deep breath, she looked up and gave a small nod. Mr. Reed
approached Terry quietly, asked him to come outside, and the room fell silent again. Mo stared down at her exam
paper, shaken but steady. She knew what she had done was right, even if it felt uncomfortable.
After school, Mo was walking towards the school gate when she heard Terry calling her behind. She turned
around to see him walking quickly toward her. He looked pale and nervous. Terry didn’t try to defend himself. He
said he had been feeling a lot of pressure from both his parents and himself to always be the top student. He admitted
he had made a terrible decision and had let both himself and Mo down. He also said he felt ashamed not only for
cheating, but for avoiding her when she had asked for help. Mo listened carefully and said nothing for a moment.
Then she told him that rules existed for a reason, and no score was worth more than integrity. As they stood quietly
near the gate, Mo realized that fairness wasn’t about punishing others—it was about making sure everyone had the
same chance to do their best, honestly.
參考范文 2
Knowing what had happened, Mr Reed asked Mo to look up in the next exam and nod if she saw that Terry
had his phone out. Mo entered the history exam room with a heavy heart. She kept reminding herself to focus on her
own work, but she couldn’t help checking on Terry now and then. To her surprise, he never once reached into his
pocket or acted strangely. He stayed focused, answering questions without hesitation. Mo began to question what she
had seen during the physics test. Perhaps he wasn’t cheating after all—maybe it was just a message, and she had
reacted too quickly. When the exam ended, Mo didn’t signal Mr. Reed. She walked out feeling unsure, not because
she regretted her choice, but because sometimes, things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
After school, Mo was walking towards the school gate when she heard Terry calling her behind. He
approached, looking calmer than she expected. Terry explained that his mother had sent him a message about a sudden
emergency at home during the physics exam. He admitted it was wrong to bring a phone into the room, even if he
didn’t use it to cheat. He also apologized for ignoring Mo earlier in the week. Mo said that while she was relieved he
hadn’t cheated, the rules still mattered. Carrying a phone during exams could damage trust, and next time, others
might not give him the benefit of the doubt. As they walked toward the gate together, Mo understood that fairness
wasn’t only about what others did—it was about choosing honesty in the moments no one was watching.

W: Hi, Michael. It’s Carol. I’m going to change Wednesday’s arrangements. Something’s come up. Could we do it a day later
M: Well, the only other possibility would be Friday. I’ve got a lot to do on Thursday.
W: OK.
(Text 2)
W: It will be about a 20-minute wait if you want to sit indoors. But we can seat you outdoors in the yard right now.
M: OK. I don’t have 20 minutes to wait.
(Text 3)
M: I’d be grateful if you could do this for me.
W: That depends.
M: I may be an hour late tomorrow. I don’t want my family to know, but Miss Jones knows about it and she’s OK with it. Oh, and
could you give my homework to her tomorrow
(Text 4)
W: How is your new job going
M: Well, it takes a lot of time to put all the fruit on the shelf. And the shop is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7: 00 p.m. So it’s much more
tiring than working 9-5 in an office. (Text 5)
M: It doesn’t sound as though we are able to go on our picnic tomorrow as the weather forecast is for storms.
W: That’s the first thing in the morning. The wind will blow the storm away by about 10:00 a.m. So it will be cloudy with some
sunshine by midday.
(Text 6)
M: Hi, Lily. I’m so glad you could make it. Where’s Greg
W: He couldn’t come. He wasn’t feeling well.
M: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Well, I’m glad you came along. What have you been up to
W: Nothing much, just work, work, and work.
M: Oh, no. Well, you can forget about work and relax now. What can I get you to drink
W: Just a glass of juice for me, please.
M: Here you go. Now, I’m just going to check on dinner. Polly will be down in a minute. She’s just upstairs putting the kids to bed.
You just sit and relax.
W: Thanks so much. I will.
(Text 7)
W: Have you decided where to take Mr. Brown to dinner tonight
M: Well, I tried to get us into a private room at Anna’s Garden, because the main dining room is too noisy, but the rooms were all
reserved. I made a reservation at Muvi, though, for 7: 30. I haven’t tried it, but I heard it was good.
W: I’ve been there. The food is excellent. It’s right next to that Japanese place, Tami, where we had Joan’s birthday party last month.
M: Right. Traffic can be heavy going that way. Let’s start out by 6 so we’ll be able to arrive there before Mr Brown. (Text

W: You look terrible. Did you have a car accident
M: Well, not exactly. This morning I went to deliver milk and the garden gate of No. 12 was locked. There was a note on the door of
the house and I thought I couldn’t read it from where I was.
W: What happened next
M: I jumped over the fence and went towards the door and, suddenly... as I was trying to read that note, a huge dog rushed at me. I
started running as fast as I could, but I didn’t see that...
W: What
M: The big branch of the tree near the garden gate. I knocked into it.
W: What about the dog
M: Thank God! It didn’t jump over the fence but stayed in the garden barking loudly.
W: It reminds me of a movie... a dog running after someone and...
M: Stop it, Mary. It isn’t that funny!
(Text 9)
M: I think the new film that Fitzgerald directed is quite good. The only problem is that it’s aimed at teenagers only. It holds no interest
for any other age group.
W: I like the great musical performances in Fitzgerald’s film. He’s also a gifted violinist and guitarist, isn’t he
M: Well, I never see him play the violin or the guitar. As far as I know, the piano is the only instrument he likes.
W: I’ve heard that quite a few important people dislike him. Do you know anything about this M: Well. Fitzgerald’s expressed his
opinions directly and that sometimes makes those important people annoyed. You see, he has his own ideas about life and he doesn’t
simply take on other people’s because they are famous. Indeed, it is this very aspect of his personality that I find most attractive. I
think the only person he admires and respects is Freddie Taylor.
W: But they have different personalities. Freddie has a warm heart and he is easy to get along with.

M: Good evening and thank you for coming to find out about the Hillside Survival School. My name’s David Johnson. I started the
school and I’m the school’s chief instructor. I learned my survival skills while I was in the army, and before starting the Hillside Survival
School, I worked at various camping sites. So, let me tell you about what happens on some of our courses. The most popular course is
our basic survival course which lasts a weekend and takes place throughout the year. This course teaches you the basic skills that you
need to survive in the wilderness and costs two hundred dollars per person. Come and join us! Imagine how much more fun you’ll have
on a sunny weekend here than you just lie on the sofa at home.
If you want an even bigger challenge, our extreme survival course takes place between November and February when the conditions are
more difficult. These courses cost two hundred and twenty pounds per person. If you come with a group of more than ten people, each
of you will get a 10% discount. The extreme survival course teaches you to survive in a wet and cold environment. No tents, no gas
cookers; just you and the wilderness. You learn to find food and cook it over an open fire. You learn to build a shelter and then you
actually sleep in it. You will probably be surprised how well you can work under difficult conditions through this course.成都外國語學(xué)校 2024-2025 學(xué)年度下期半期考試

Wang Yongxian, who was born in 1950 in Taiyuan, the capital of north China’s Shanxi
Province, is a Chinese expert in the restoration of ancient Chinese buildings. Since 1972, Wang has
restored over 100 precious ancient buildings.
At the age of 22, Wang joined the cultural relics working committee of Shanxi Province
working on surveys, mapping, and restoration of ancient buildings. For years, he roamed the
wilderness, devoting himself to the preservation of temples and pagodas (佛塔).
At that time, many valuable historical buildings had suffered severe damage from natural
elements, leaving them ruined and on the edge of collapse. Wang saw himself as a “firefighter” on
the front lines, racing against time to rescue these structures.
In his early 20s, Wang once dreamed of a more attractive city life and even considered
changing jobs. But witnessing the devotion and sacrifice of senior experts changed his mind. One
day, while accompanying Chinese architectural historian Luo Zhewen to inspect the Wooden
Pagoda of Yingxian county, Wang watched as Luo — despite being in his sixties — climbed shaky
beams (橫梁) inside the tower without any safety railing. This commitment deeply moved him. “I
must pass the mission of protecting ancient buildings to younger generations, turning our pioneers’
spirit into action,” Wang said.
Thanks to the painstaking efforts of Wang and his colleagues over the decades, an increasing
number of ancient buildings across Shanxi, such as Foguang Temple, Chongfu Temple, Guandi
Temple, Jinci Temple’s Shengmu Hall, and Xuankong Temple, have been revitalized and opened
to the public.
After retiring from his job, Wang’s love for ancient architecture has not diminished a bit. He
immersed himself in research, learned woodworking techniques, created models of Dougong, and
published many monographs and papers. “I have had an inseparable bond with ancient buildings
throughout my life. I feel deeply pleased to contribute a little to the conservation of ancient
architectural culture,” Wang said.
24. Which of the following best describes Wang according to the first two paragraphs
A. A highly skilled craftsman. B. A knowledgeable architect.
C. A dedicated preservationist. D. A widely influential historian.
25. What does paragraph 3 indicate about the ancient building restoration
A. It is a slow and complex process. B. It has significant cultural impacts.
C. It needs great efforts and funding. D. It is extremely important and urgent.
26. How did Luo’s deed influence Wang
A. It pushed him to change his major. B. It started his love for ancient buildings.
C. It inspired him to stick to his work. D. It fueled his desire to become an architect.

A. Challenges of Restoring Ancient Architecture
B. Lifelong Dedication to Restoring Ancient Buildings
C. The Path to Becoming an Architectural Preservationist
D. The Role of Senior Experts in Cultural Heritage Preservation

On September 26, 2022, NASA successfully completed its Double Asteroid Redirection Test
(DART) mission by intentionally crashing an unmanned spacecraft into the asteroid(小行星)
Dimorphos. The goal was not to destroy the asteroid but to change its orbit. With the successful
mission, NASA proved the concept that this technique could keep a potentially dangerous asteroid
from crashing into Earth in the future.
Dimorphos is a small asteroid orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. NASA noted that
Dimorphos is not a threat to Earth, but because it passes relatively close to Earth, it was chosen as
the target for the test mission.
Although the intended crash should change the asteroid’s position slightly, it will add to a
major shift over time. “If you were going to do this for planetary defense, you would do it 5, 10, 15,
or 20 years in advance for this technique to work, “ said NASA program executive Andrea Riley.
“This is why we test. We want to do it now rather than when there’s an actual need.”
Asteroids can pose a significant threat to planet Earth. For example, around 66 million years
ago, an asteroid around 6 to 9 miles across struck the Earth in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula.
The resulting impact was so disastrous that it caused one of the largest extinction events in Earth’s
history. Therefore, DART’s success is an important step forward in protecting the planet from
potential damage from an asteroid. This shows humans are no longer powerless to prevent this type
of natural disaster.
The DART spacecraft was launched by NASA on November 24, 2021. It was accompanied by
another craft called LICIACube, supplied by the Italian Space Agency, and separated from DART
just 15 days before the crash. LICIACube remained in orbit around the asteroid and took
photographs of the crash and material ejected(彈出) from the asteroid’s surface.
28. What is the purpose of the DART mission
A. To destroy Dimorphos completely.
B. To change the orbit of Dimorphos.
C. To track potentially dangerous asteroids.
D. To prevent Dimorphos from hitting the Earth.
29. How can we describe the test according to Andrea Riley
A. Better late than never. B. Rob Peter to pay Paul.
C. Prepare for a rainy day. D. Well begun is half done.
30. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 4
A. To prove the significance of DART’s success.
B. To present the effect of the largest extinction events on humans.
{#{QQABBQ4twgAwkgTACR5rEwHECguQkIGgJQoMBVAYqA5iABFAFKA=}#}
C. To explain the difficulty of protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes.
D. To show the necessity of conducting research on all natural disasters.
31. What is LICIACube intended for
A. Recording the crash test with photos.
B. Collecting rock samples from Dimorphos’s surface.
C. Providing additional energy for the DART spacecraft.
D. Increasing the force of crashing the DART spacecraft.

The needs of plus-size consumers have long been the elephant in the room of the fashion
industry until body positivity and fat acceptance movements promoted the slogan that large-bodied
people are not those who are left behind. This size-inclusive(尺碼包容) trend has become so
popular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashion brands have finally decided to
extend their size ranges. In 2022, the plus-size market grew twice as fast as the standard size market
in both North America and the UK.
Yet, many consumers say fashion brands broadening their ranges are not truly inclusive.
“Inclusive sizing means that all bodies are included in fashion, not just the ones who fit in standard
sizes,” says Marie Southard Ospina, a UK-based plus-size girl. “However, what many designers do
right now is pick a number that they think is big enough to include plus sizes and stop. This is even
more disrespectful.”
Researchers also note that some brands are just taking advantage of the trend. “Brands that
used to promote so-called perfect bodies in their advertisements are now trying to get in on the trend
by adding a few sizes. It doesn’t feel like they really care about plus-size people,” says Tom Burgess,
analyst in fashion industry. “If brands cared about large-bodied consumers, then it wouldn’t have
taken until now to acknowledge that they exist,” he says. “It gives the impression that companies
are just trying to gain a share of the market without a real commitment to the community.”
The fashion industry must go beyond merely producing clothing in a range of sizes if they hope
to succeed with a body-diverse world. The whole industry has to connect on a personal level with
consumers. That involves showing shoppers that they are seen, understood and important to brands.
“Consumers care about values, and so they want to buy from brands that reflect the values they
believe in. Everyone should enjoy the same range of fashion options,” says Ludovica Cesareo,
professor of marketing at the College of Business in the US.
32. What do the underlined words “the elephant in the room” mean in the first paragraph
A. The hot issue that is valued.
B. The obvious truth that is ignored.
C. The important principle that is recognized.
D. The common phenomenon that is criticized.
33. Why do consumers say fashion brands are not truly inclusive
A. They pick sizes randomly. B. They offer limited plus sizes.
C. They treat designers disrespectfully. D. They haven’t broadened standard sizes.
{#{QQABBQ4twgAwkgTACR5rEwHECguQkIGgJQoMBVAYqA5iABFAFKA=}#}
34. What is researchers’ attitude towards some brands
A. Appreciative. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
35. What does the last paragraph imply
A. All buyers deserve fashion that fits their figure.
B. Consumers prefer brands with personalized values.
C. Brands should catch up with the size-inclusive trend.
D. A good brand image is critical in the fashion industry.

Johannes Gutenberg — The pioneer of the printing press
Johannes Gutenberg was chosen to be the most important figure of the past millennium(一千
年) by the media. You may not be familiar with him. 36.________________ Gutenberg is praised
for having invented the printing press and therefore paved the way for printing books.
He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mainz, Germany. In his early life, he was
trained to be a goldsmith. In 1428, he moved to Strasbourg and lived there for almost 20 years.
37.________________
Gutenberg used his skills in metalwork for the mass production of books.
38.________________ That meant that each copy of the Catholic Bible and all of its 73 books had
to be painstakingly handwritten by 10 penmen. Gutenberg fashioned a font(字體) of over 300
characters, far larger than the fonts of today. To make this possible, he invented the variable-width
mold(模具) and perfected the mixture of materials used by type factories up to the present century.
39.________________ Between 1450 and 1455, while preparing to produce a large Latin Bible,
Gutenberg is thought to have printed a number of smaller books, a calendar, and a papal Letter of
Indulgence. The 42-Line Latin Bible, the oldest surviving printed book in the Western world, was
completed by August 15, 1456.
The invention of the modern printing press changed the way information was delivered.
40.________________ Even today, in the computer age, we rely heavily on the printed word or text
for instruction, information, and for the pleasure of reading literature.
A. Gutenberg made the world a much richer place.
B. But he has certainly influenced your life in some ways.
C. Gutenberg’s idea was one of the greatest of all mankind.
D. By 1450, Gutenberg was back in Mainz at work on the printing press.
E. Before the spread of Gutenberg’s invention, books were mainly handwritten.
F. In fact, this invention contributed a lot to educating the masses worldwide.
G. It was in Strasbourg that he probably did his first experiments with moveable type.

Mo was waiting in the corridor with her class on Friday morning. She felt sick and her knees
were shaking. She always felt sick during the exam week. She had two more exams that day and
physics was the first. She really hated physics. Terry glanced back at her from the front of the queue

Mo had noticed Terry looking back at them. “I thought you were friends.” ”Yeah, so did I,” said Mo,
“He’d promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then just ignored all my calls and texts.”
Nina was trying to look sympathetic. However, it was time to go into the exam room. Mo gave Nina
a worried look and followed them.

she looked up. Terry was sitting a few rows in front of her to the right and Mo couldn’t believe her

good grades She just felt really angry at Terry. She almost put her hand up to tell Mr Reed, but
Terry had already put his phone away when Mo looked up again. He looked back over her shoulder
at Mo and smiled sadly.

Mr. Perfect had been cheating all this time. The next exam was history, which was Mo’s favorite
and best subject but it didn’t help her feel any better. She was furious with Terry. She wanted to talk
to him but she’d left instantly the exam had finished and now Mo couldn’t find him. She didn’t
