Yang Li, a native Miao woman passionate about embroidery (刺繡), owns a shop selling Miao embroidery and silver jewelry. Initially, the small shop struggled because there were many similar products on the market. She needed something special to stand out. During a hike in Fanjing Mountain in July 2011, a sharp leaf cut her hand, which gave her an idea, “People make bookmarks and paintings with leaf-vein (葉脈).Why not try leaf-vein embroidery ”
Apparently, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. Yang Li collected thousands of leaves from Fanjing Mountain and processed them by steaming, boiling and treating them to show their veins. While the leaves become soft, they are also easily broken. The biggest challenge was improving the flexibility of the leaves. After consulting local expert Shen Min, she learned that putting them in acidic water could make them tough enough for embroidery.
Through constant learning and practice, she succeeded in creating her first piece of leaf-vein embroidery, perfectly combining traditional embroidery patterns with the natural textures of the leaves. By adding traditional designs from the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups, she produced art that exhibits a distinctive artistic appeal of traditional embroidery with contemporary craftsmanship (工藝). Yang notes that typically, only those with decades of embroidery experience can independently complete the entire leaf-embroidery process, which is fewer than 20 people in Tongren from 2011 to now.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities. “Guizhou is a province with a large number of ethnic groups and has a long history of ethnic embroidery skills,” she says. “I will keep doing the leaf-vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful.”
24. What inspired Yang Li to create leaf-vein embroidery
A. The need to stand out in the market.
B. An injury to her hand during a hike.
C. Her passion for traditional embroidery.
D. The popularity of leaf-vein bookmarks and paintings.
25. What was the most difficult problem Yang Li faced in making leaf-vein embroidery
A. Collecting abundant leaves.
B. Putting leaves in acidic water.
C. Learning how to boil the leaves properly.
D. Preventing the leaves from breaking easily.
26. How does the author view Yang Li’s leaf-vein embroidery
A. Critical. B. Indifferent.
C. Admirable. D. Enthusiastic.
27. What would be the best title for the passage
A. The Development of Traditional Embroidery.
B. The Challenges of Leaf-Vein Embroidery Production.
C. A Miao Woman’s Unique Marketing Strategies for Success.

South Korean scientists have developed a new type of food called “meaty rice”. It is a mixture of cow muscle and fat cells integrated into rice grains. The research team at Seoul’s Yonsei University, led by Professor Park So-hyeon, used a technique called cell-cultured protein, which involves growing animal cells in the lab without harming any animals. They then infused (注入) these cells into rice grains, using a special process that preserves the grain’s structure and properties.
Meaty rice is a pink-hued grain that is packed with beef muscle and fat cells, offering a meaty taste and texture. According to the study, each gram of meaty rice contains about 0.4 grams of protein, compared to 0.08 grams in regular rice. It also has a higher iron, zinc and vitamin B12 content, which are essential for human health. It offers a unique flavor, enhances nutrition and reduces environmental impact.
Conventional meat production consumes large amounts of land, water and energy and releases greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Meaty rice, on the other hand, requires fewer resources and produces fewer emissions than animal farming. According to the study, meaty rice could reduce land use by 99%, water use by 96% and greenhouse gas emissions by 92%, compared to beef production.
However, meaty rice is still in its early stages of development and many issues must be tackled before it can be widely accepted. For instance, how will it affect the health and safety of consumers How will it affect the livelihoods (生計) of farmers and the economy of food production The researchers are optimistic that meaty rice will be a game-changer for the future of food and they are planning to conduct more tests to improve its quality. They believe that meaty rice could be the next frontier of food innovation and also help relieve hunger and malnutrition by providing cheaper and more accessible sources of protein and micronutrients.
28. How did researchers develop the meaty rice
A. By adding artificial flavors to rice grains. B. By growing rice in a special environment.
C. By integrating animal cells into rice grains. D. By infusing plant-based proteins into meat.
29. What advantage does meaty rice have over regular rice
A. It has a higher yield. B. It is more nutritious.
C. It has a fresher taste. D. It is more affordable.
30. What is the purpose of paragraph 3
A. To stress the strengths of meaty rice production.
B. To explain the challenges of developing meaty rice.
C. To reveal the significance of promoting green farming.
D. To show the increasing demand for meat consumption.
31. What can we infer about meaty rice according to researchers
A. It can be a key option to address the food crisis.
B. It can greatly expand the livelihoods of farmers.
C. It will completely resolve global issues of starvation.
D. It will replace traditional meat products in the future.

An advanced, multifunctional research ship that recently concluded its first sea trial will be commissioned by China in the near future.
The Tansuo 3, or called Exploration 3, was jointly designed by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Guangzhou Shipyard (造船廠) International and other research organizations. Its construction began in June 2023 at the shipyard and the main body was completed in April.
The vessel underwent an eight-day trial voyage in late October and then returned to the shipyard for a final equipment installation and some small adjustments. There are plans for the ship to go through more sea trials, according to He Guangwei, deputy chief engineer of Guangzhou Shipyard International and the vessel’s chief designer. “During the trial operation, engineers tested the ship’s capabilities and performance, including its speed, the ability to be controlled, operational noise and information capacity and the results were satisfactory. It is scheduled to start operating in early 2025,” he said on Friday.

It was supposed to be a perfect father-son biking adventure. Sixteen-year-old Tom and his dad had planned a 50-kilometer bike ride through the countryside to celebrate Tom’s birthday. The night before, Tom was so excited that he could barely sleep. His mind was full of images of the open road and the beautiful scenery they would encounter.
Before leaving, Tom’s dad put on an old silver watch. It was a family treasure passed down from his grandpa. The watch’s glass was cracked, showing its long history, but it still kept time accurately, standing as a symbol of the family’s toughness. “This watch has seen its share of tough times, just like all of us,” his dad said, smiling at Tom. “But it keeps going, and so will we.” Tom nodded, feeling close to his dad when he looked at the watch.
In the warm morning sun, they set off. Their backpacks were filled with water, energy-boosting snacks and a first-aid kit for any emergencies. Tom’s shiny red bike, which he had spent weeks cleaning and fixing, shone brightly in the sun. As they cycled along the country roads, the fresh smell of grass and wildflowers filled the air. Tom felt extremely happy and pedaled (踩踏板) even harder with excitement.
However, as the morning passed, the sun gradually disappeared behind thick dark clouds. By noon, a cold and heavy rain started to fall. The dry dirt path quickly turned into a muddy mess. Tom’s legs, which had been moving smoothly just a few hours ago, now ached with every push of the pedals. He took a deep breath and tried to focus on the rhythm of his pedaling, trying to ignore the rain and the tiredness in his legs.
Although they were wet and uncomfortable, they kept going. They were determined not to let the weather stop them. But when they turned a sharp corner, they saw a long, steep slope (斜坡). The rain was still pouring heavily, and the path ahead looked very slippery with mud sliding down. Tom’s heart sank, and he began to doubt himself.

Dear schoolmates,
The rapid development of society witnesses the increasingly severe environmental pollution. Our planet is suffering
from issues like air pollution, water shortage, and plastic waste. Thus,it's high time we took action to protect our
environment.
As far as I'm concerned, the significance of an environment-friendly lifestyle can never be emphasized too much.
To make a difference,we can start with simple steps.First of all,we are supposed to choose green transportation such as
biking or taking public transport. In addition,it is highly recommended to save water and electricity at school and
home.Last but not least,we should recycle waste and reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Let's join hands to create a cleaner and more sustainable world!Every small effort counts.Act now!
Yours Sincerely,
