Diving isn't just about swimming alongside various marine species, but the adventure also involves appreciating nature as a work of art. One diver Gary Grayson from Worsley had a rather shocking experience with two seals that were swimming around him.
During one of his dives off the coasts of the Isles of Scilly, England, Grayson got lucky and found two young seals. One of the seals approached him first and started playing with him by touching his hand. The diver remained still, hoping it would leave him alone, while the seal went on with its actions. The marine creature kept exploring Grayson, who had no idea why the seal wouldn't leave him alone.
It turned out that the animal had something adorable in mind and dragged at Grayson's arms slightly because it wanted a scratch (撓) from the diver, and Grayson instantly understood. As he gently scratched the animal, it seemed to enjoy it and wanted more. The diver was excited about this heartwarming interaction with the seal. “I was absolutely loving it,” the 55-year-old experienced diver said.
“We were told just to keep still but the more still we were, the more curious this seal was because we were in their world,”the diver explained. After the first seal was done playing with him, the second seal that was swimming around the diver started to take an interest in his legs.
Being an adventure lover, Grayson always loved living life on the edge. But the time he had with those two seals underwater was something extraordinary for him. Immune cells rush to the brain and promote deep sleep after a heart attack, according to a new study involving both mice and humans. This deep sleep helps recovery by relieving inflammation (炎癥) in the heart, the study found.
The findings published on October 30 in Nature, could help to guide care for people after a heart attack, says co-author Cameron McAlpine who studies immune function in the cardiovascular (心血管的) systems. “Getting enough sleep and rest after a heart attack is important for long-term recovery of the heart,” he notes.
Scientists have long known that sleep and cardiovascular health are linked. People who sleep poorly have a higher chance of developing high blood pressure than good sleepers. But how cardiovascular diseases affect sleep has been less explored.
To learn more the researchers induced (引發(fā)) heart attacks in mice and observed the animals’ brainwaves. They found these mice spent much more time on slow-wave sleep — a stage of deep sleep associated with recovery — than mice that hadn’t had a heart attack.
Next, the authors sought to understand what was causing that effect. One obvious place to look was the brain, which controls sleep, notes McAlpine. The team found that, after a mouse’s heart attack, immune cells called monocytes flooded its brain. These cells produced large amounts of a protein (蛋白質(zhì)) called tumour necrosis factor which is an important controller of inflammation and also promotes sleep.
The authors also studied humans who had experienced coronary syndrome, a word for conditions, including heart attack, that are caused by a sudden reduction of blood flow to the heart muscle. Those who reported poor sleep in the weeks following such an episode(發(fā)作期)had a higher possibility of developing serious cardiovascular problems over the next two years than those who were good sleepers.
“Doctors need to tell patients the importance of a good night’s sleep after a heart attack,” says Rowe. This should also be considered at the hospital where tests would be conducted well during the daytime to minimize sleep interruptions. She adds, “When your grandma says, ‘if you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll get sick’ there’s a lot of truth to that.”

In Radioactive, Pike brings the same level of stable commitment to an alternately fascinating and disappointing biopic (傳記片) about French scientist Marie Curie.
Based on Lauren Redniss’s graphic novel, Radioactive covers the well-known achievements of Marie Curie: her Nobel Prize wins for discovering radium and polonium, and her groundbreaking research on radioactivity. For those unfamiliar with her personal life, the film reveals lesser-known aspects, including her passionate partnership with her husband Pierre, a scandalous affair that damaged her reputation, and her Polish roots, which made her an outsider in Paris. Though not an activist, Curie’s determination to be respected in a male-dominated scientific world aligns with early feminist ideals.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (known for Persepolis), Radioactive attempts to translate the bold visuals and narrative style of a graphic novel into live-action, with mixed results. The film is visually strikine. thanks to Anthony Dod Mantle’s cinematography—the glowing green radium is both mesmerizing and ominous. Yet, the storytelling falters when Satrapi inserts surreal time jumps, showing how Curie’s discoveries later influenced both medicine and warfare.
Pike delivers a strong performance, portraying Curie as brilliant but difficult—admirable yet not always likable. However, the film struggles with its uneven structure, shifting between biography and symbolic scenes that feel out of place. The irony of Curie’s story is that she hated suffering, yet her work led to both life-saving treatments and destructive weapons.
Ultimately, Radioactive’s biggest flaw may be its source material. The episodic, fragmented style of the graphic novel doesn’t fully translate to film, leaving the story feeling uneven. While Pike’s performance and Curie’s remarkable life make the movie worth watching, the execution falls short of its potential.
