Doing exercise before you study may help you better remember what you learn. A study shows that a group of young people who did 15 minutes of training remembered more words. Billionaire Carl Icahn has stepped up his fight with McDonald’s over the welfare of pigs used in its food chain. Mr Icahn, whose no-nonsense reputation for shaking-up companies made him a Wall Street legend, has proposed Leslie Samuelrich and Maisie Ganzler stand for election at the 2022 annual meeting. He owns only 200 McDonald’s shares (股份), which gives him power to stir up for change, though it was reported that he was inspired by his daughter, an animal right activist who has worked for the Humane Society.
McDonald’s says it has led the way in improving animal welfare standards. The battle centers on claims about pregnant pigs being kept in small crates (板條箱), a practice Mr Icahn said was “dirty”. He said McDonald’s had not lived up to a promise to stop the pork from pigs housed in crates for the pregnant, a practice targeted by animal lovers. He had asked all McDonald’s pork suppliers in the US to move to “crate-free pork”, along time-frames he had set.
Activist investors such as Mr Icahn-one of a handful of feared investors said to have been the model for Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie Wall Street-normally focus on companies they believe need restructuring.
McDonald’s promised to stop ordering pork from suppliers putting pregnant pigs in crates back in 2012. The firm said it had “led the industry” since then and about a third of US pork suppliers have moved to group housing systems. It said it expected to source 85% to 90% of its pork from these suppliers by the year’s end. All of the pork it buys will come from these suppliers by 2024.
McDonald’s said in a statement that it would continue to work with the industry to improve standards, but that some of Mr Icahn’s demands were unreasonable. It also noted that Mr Icahn was the majority owner of Viskase, which makes and supplies packaging for the pork and poultry industry. It added that he had “not publicly called” on Viskase to make similar commitments.

A computer programme can identify breast cancer from routine scans with greater accuracy than human experts, researchers said in what they hoped could prove a breakthrough in the fight against the global killer.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, with more than 2 million new diagnoses (診斷) last year alone.
Regular screening is vital in detecting the earliest signs of the disease in patients who show no obvious symptoms. In Britain, women over 50 are advised to get a mammogram (X線照片) every three years, the results of which are analyzed by two independent experts. But interpreting the scans leaves room for error, and a small percentage of all mammograms either return a false positive-misdiagnosing a healthy’ patient as having cancer-or false negative-missing the disease as it spreads.
Now researchers at Google Health have trained an artificial intelligence model to detect cancer in breast scans from thousands of women in Britain and the United States. The images had already been reviewed by doctors in real life but unlike in a clinical setting, the machine had no patient history to inform its diagnoses. The team found that their AI model could predict breast cancer from the scans with a greater accuracy than human expert doctors.
Further, the AI showed a reduction in the percentage of cases where cancer was incorrectly identified — 5.7 percent in the US and 1.2 percent in Britain, respectively. It also reduced the percentage of missed diagnoses by 9.4 percent among US patients and by 2.7 percent in Britain.
“The earlier you identify a breast cancer the better it is for the patient,” Dominic King, UK lead at Google Health, told AFP. “We think about this technology in a way that supports and enables an expert, or a patient finally, to get the best outcome from whatever diagnostics they’ve had.”

The universe has been expanding ever since the Big Bang, about 14 billion years ago. But scientists long thought that gravity would strictly control this expansion. Perhaps the universe would keep swelling, but more slowly. Or someday gravity might cause the universe to collapse (坍塌) back in on itself. That prediction is called the “Big Crunch.”
In 1998, though, those predictions were upended. Astronomers had been watching supernovae-the explosions of distant stars. Another 25 percent the total stuff in the universe is an invisible substance called dark matter. The rest-a measly 5 percent-is normal matter. The nature of dark energy is one of science’s greatest mysteries. Maybe it is a property of empty space. Maybe it’s some kind of energy fluid or field that fills space. Since we don’t know what dark energy is, it’s hard to predict how it will behave. Far in the future, perhaps dark energy will overcome the forces holding the universe together. The universe would then tear itself apart. Such runaway expansion is called the “Big Rip.” So dark energy is key not just for understanding the universe today. It’s also key to understanding the final fate of the universe.
