Raised in Bengaluru, Meera Iyer has spent over a decade of her life discovering and restoring the city’s unexplored heritage buildings. The key moment came when she paid a visit to Devanahalli Fort. “It was shocking that many residents of the city were unaware of the presence of heritage buildings,” Meera says. “That realization became the catalyst for me to join INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage).”
Speaking on the topic of what truly makes up history in the eyes of people, Meera comments, “There are thousands of monuments (歷史遺跡) in the country protected by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). However, there are small temples, buildings, schools, and homes that also hold historical significance. The challenge lies in protecting them. I understand that it’s not practical to protect every fragment (碎片) of the past, but there must be a way to document and raise awareness about these sites, so that more of our history can be maintained.”
To deal with the challenge, INTACH hosts heritage walks. The walks mainly focus on the local community and are targeted at the citizens of the city. “While we do welcome tourists and travellers, our emphasis is on engaging the local population,” says Meera. The group has organized hundreds of heritage walks in the local language to reach the goal. The organization also works on the protection of historical buildings. In the past years, it has restored several buildings in and around Bengaluru.
Talking about the future, Meera says, “We face a number of issues, with funding being the major problem. However, my end goal is to find myself without a job. In such a desirable state, heritage is fully protected, and the community as a whole is deeply involved in its protection. While the realization of this goal may be uncertain and not immediate, it remains a significant career.”
4. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in Paragraph I probably mean
A. Tool. B. Reason. C. Purpose. D. Disadvantage.
5. What aspect of cultural protection does Meera call for
A. Education about national heroes. B. Restoration of typical monuments.

A. To familiarize people with local heritage. B. To explore new uses of the city heritage.
C. To raise money for building restoration. D. To attract citizens to local tourism.
7. How does Meera Iyer view her heritage protection work
A. Tiring and costly. B. Inspiring but dangerous.
C. Interesting and shocking. D. Challenging but rewarding.

Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest. In their report, published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, they say music should be considered as part of a lifestyle approach to maintain the brain.
More than 1,100 people aged over 40, with an average age of 68, were studied. Scientists observed their brain function data, looking at the effects of playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening to music.
The researchers compared the cognitive (認知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had. Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the “multiple cognitive demands” of the activity.
“Playing the piano or keyboard appeared to be particularly beneficial. Simply listening to music did not appear to help cognitive health. The benefit seen with singing might be partly because of the known social aspects of being in a choir or group.” the researchers say.
“Because we have such sensitive brain tests for this study, we are able to look at individual aspects of the brain function, such as short-term memory, long-term memory and problem-solving,” lead author Anne Corbett said.
“Playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and people who continue to play into an older age saw an additional benefit,” she said. “Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs to be exercised, and learning to read music is a bit like learning a new language.” In the study, people who read music regularly had better numerical memory.
“The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia (癡呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that.” Anne said. However, she added. “It would be naive to think taking up a musical instrument would mean you won’t develop dementia.”
8. What does the research say about music
A. It takes constant practice. B. It does old people’s brains a favor.
C. It improves long-term memory. D. It sharpens the language ability.
9. How is the research carried out
A. By conducting a survey. B. By citing an expert.
C. By making comparison. D. By exercising the brain.
10. Which best describes playing musical instruments
A. Emotionally disturbing. B. Mentally pleasing.
C. Physically challenging. D. Cognitively demanding.
11. Which word can replace the underlined word “naive” in the last paragraph
A. innocent. B. complicated. C. realistic. D. wise.

Mrs. Palin spoke as she walked to the front of the classroom, “Next Wednesday, I’ll give you a test to check your ability as a conductor. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer’s music.” And then she smiled, “You’ll receive the test in front of your classmates.”
“What A test in front of the classmates It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.
“Who’s that person ” I wondered. I didn’t know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”
Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms’s compositions and its relevant music notation (樂譜). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (來回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn’t perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name, “Jill, it’s your turn.”

C. realistic. D. wise.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A
根據第一段中“Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest.(英國研究人員指出,演奏樂器或唱歌有助于老年人保持大腦健康)”可知,研究表明音樂對老年人的大腦有益。
根據第三段中“The researchers compared the cognitive (認知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had.(研究人員將研究中那些在生活里以某種方式接觸過音樂的人的認知數據,與那些從未接觸過音樂的人的認知數據進行了對比)”可推知,這項研究是通過比較的方式進行的。
根據第三段“Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the ‘multiple cognitive demands’ of the activity.(他們的研究結果表明,演奏樂器的人受益最大,這可能是因為這項活動的“多種認知需求”)”可知,演奏樂器涉及“多重認知需求”,這意味著它需要大量的腦力投入,會激活大腦的多個區域,這也是它對認知健康如此有益的原因。
根據劃線詞前文““The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia (癡呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that.” Anne said. 故選A。

根據空格前的問句“How does one become an intellectual (知識分子) (一個人如何成為一個知識分子?)”可知,空格處的句子應該是回答上文的問題,所以,C項“Well, it often involves a lot of devotion to studying and research. (嗯,它通常需要大量的投入到學習和研究中。)”填入空格處,符合語境。同時,C項與下文“Unfortunately, the average person doesn’t have time to devote hours to research. (不幸的是,一般人沒有時間花幾個小時去研究。)”是轉折關系。故選C項。
【13題詳解】
空格處是該部分的主題句。根據下文“It takes the average person 10 hours to read a book, which is a lot of time many of us don’t have. With Blinkist, the most powerful ideas are shared in short audio (音頻) and text explainers. It only takes 15 minutes to read or listen to them. (一般人讀一本書要花10個小時,我們很多人都沒有這么多時間。有了Blinkist,最有力的想法就可以通過簡短的音頻和文字解釋來分享。只需要15分鐘去讀或聽。)”可知,Blinkist可以讓你用15分鐘的時間去讀或聽需要用10個小時讀完的一本書的內容。所以,A項“A Book Explained in 15 Minutes. (15分鐘解釋一本書。)”可以作為該部分的主題句,填入空格處。故選A項。
根據上文的句子“With Blinkist, the most powerful ideas are shared in short audio (音頻) and text explainers. It only takes 15 minutes to read or listen to them. (有了Blinkist,最有力的想法就可以通過簡短的音頻和文字解釋來分享。只需要15分鐘去讀或聽。)”可知,因為Blinkist的這種特點,空格處的句子應該接著說Blinkist便于學習的優點,所以,F項“So you can find time to learn while eating breakfast, commuting to work, or walking the dog. (所以你可以在吃早餐、上下班或遛狗的時候找時間學習。)”填入空格處,符合語境。故選F項。
【15題詳解】
根據該部分的主題句“It Helps Break the Mindless Scrolling (滾屏) Routine. (它有助于打破無意識刷屏的習慣。)”和空格前的句子“You know those moments when you catch yourself endlessly scrolling-through social media It’s something an alarmingly high number of people suffer from, which leaves people feeling tired and unproductive after. (你知道自己沒完沒了地刷社交媒體的那些時刻嗎?很多人都患有這種病,這讓人們感到疲憊,工作效率低下。)”可知,空格處的句子應該接著說Blinkist是怎樣幫助人們打破無意識刷屏的習慣。所以,D項“Blinkist turns those wasted minutes into valuable learning opportunities. (Blinkist把這些浪費的時間變成寶貴的學習機會。)”填入空格處,符合語境。故選D項。
【16題詳解】
根據該部分的主題句“Intellectuals Love to Learn by Listening. (知識分子喜歡通過傾聽來學習。)”和空格后的句子“It made it possible for big thinkers to listen to every title in the app, which means learning never has to wait until you have time to sit down. (這使得思考者可以在應用程序中聽每一個標題,這意味著學習不必等到你有時間坐下來。)”可知,空格處的句子應該提到Blinkist具有音頻播放功能。所以,G項“The app became particularly popular with intellectuals when the audio feature was introduced. (在引入音頻功能后,這款應用在知識分子中特別受歡迎。)”填入空格處,符合語境。故選G項。

【答案】Dear Tom,
Hearing that you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals, I’m writing to tell you something about my favourite festival — the Mid-Autumn Festival.
With a long history of over 1300 years, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most significant festivals in China, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. On that day, family members usually get together and have a feast. Besides, people will also admire the moon and share mooncakes. The reason why I love this festival is that I like eating mooncakes. They are in the shape of a full moon, carrying people’s wishes to the families they love and miss.
In short, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a day of pleasure and happiness. I hope that my letter will help you know more about Chinese festivals.
Yours,
Li Hua

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. Standing in front of all the students made me very nervous, and my legs kept shaking. To make the matter worse, my brain went blank at that very moment, forgeting my previous practice. However, I tried to remind myself to be calm. After a few deep breaths, I felt much better and began to perform. Thinking my conduct must be terrible, I was even unwilling to think about the result.
The next day, Mrs. Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score. With my report card in hand, my heart pounded because I was afraid that I would be the one who got the lowest score. I closed my eyes and slowly opened my report card. To my surprise, I got a high score. When the teacher announced that I was the best in my class, I almost jumped with joy. I understood that only by working hard, can we get good results.
