But satisfying my curiosity for knowledge as a postdoc seemed more exciting. The problem was what to do afterward. When people would ask me, “What would you like to do next ” and I had no answer to give and began to worry. My research was fun, but I doubted it could ever be useful. My peers (同輩) asked sharp questions during academic discussions. I could not get rid of the feeling that I was just pretending. It was only during my third postdoc that I experienced a change of attitude. It happened after I volunteered to co-lead a group of scientists writing a perspective piece about what future research was needed in our field. The senior researchers on the team commented that although the draft still needed some significant changes, it was suitable for submission to a high-impact journal. This statement changed my attitude. Clearly, they saw me as knowledgeable and competent. Maybe I needed to value my own professional skills a little more highly I decided to do my best to improve the article — spending more than a year reading dozens of papers, leading group discussions, and editing the article. The process was long and dull. But the more time I devoted to it, the more knowledge I gained, and the more confident I grew. Ultimately, I landed a tenure-track position. When students ask me for advice, I usually tell them that one does not need to have a clear life plan to belong in science. Many know from the start that they want to be researchers. But for others the path to being a scientist unfolds gradually, with uncertainties along the way. As researchers, part of our mission involves finding our way without always knowing where we are going. By the way, always keep in mind that it is self-trust that counts.4. What made the author feel anxious A. Laughter from her peers. B. Uselessness of her major.C. Uncertainty of her future. D. Distance from her dreams.5. Why did the author shift her attitude A. She acquired respect from others. B. Teammates gave practical advice.C. She finished the essay quickly. D. Teammates praised her draft.6. What does the author suggest students do A. Have an obvious life direction. B. Seek for careers like explorers.C. Neglect worldly labels bravely. D. Stick to original choices firmly.7. What is the suitable title for the text A. How I found my confidence as a scientist B. How I regained my curiosity for researchC. How I sensed the meaning of persistence D. How I achieved in mathematical biologyCOn average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.“Children are affected by the same time crunch that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time 8. What does the underlined phrase “the same time crunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to A. Children have little time to play with their parents.B. Both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time.C. Children are not taken good care of by their working parents.D. Both parents and children have trouble managing their time.9. In the author’s opinion, a child develops better if .A. he has plenty of time reading and studying B. he is free to interact with his working parentsC. he is left to play with his peers in his own way D. he has more time participating in school activities10. What does the author worry about American kids A. They are increasingly ignored by their working mothers.B. They are engaged in more and more structured activities.C. They are spending more and more time watching TV.D. They are involved less and less in household work.11. What can we conclude from the text A. Extracurricular activities promote children’s intelligence.B. Most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children.C. Efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful.D. Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off.DIn the U. S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human health, but does pose a problem for the country’s waterways. The nation’s wastewater is loaded with the leftovers (殘留物) from protein digestion: nitrogen (氮) compounds that can feed harmful algal blooms (藻華) and pollute the air and drinking water.Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U. S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in wastewater — some 67 to 100 precent — is a by-product of water people consume.Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms (微生物) that feed on dead algae use up the oxygen in the water, leading to “dead zones”, where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and her team suggest that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.12. Which aspect of Americans’ diet does Almaraz’s research focus on A. Its amount. B. Its variety. C. Its make-up. D. Its effect.13. What causes “dead zones” in the water A. Death of lots of healthy algae. B. No oxygen for many species.C. Microorganisms’ over-consumption of nutrients. D. Poisonous chemicals released by harmful algae.14. What is the problem with current algal bloom treatment methods A. They are too costly. B. They are time-consuming.C. They may cause more pollution. D. They may kill all algae.15. What does the text mainly tell us A. Prevention is better than cure in treating air pollution.B. Researchers find solutions to the wastewater problem.C. It is high time to treat wild algae growth.D. Eating too much protein harms the planet.第二節(jié)(共5小題,每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。By being involved in your community improvement, you can gain a sense of achievement. Next Saturday was her friend Betty’s birthday, but she did not have anything nice to wear to the party. Her father had just lost his job, so she couldn’t ask for a new dress. Nina decided to wear an old dress that had been her favorite for many years but had become a little too short for her now. “I’ll ask the tailor to increase the length,” Nina said to herself. The tailor, however, refused to do so. “The dress is too old. Any alteration (改動) won’t work for it. Besides, I have too many other orders. My hands are full.” With a sad heart, she walked out of the tailor’s shop. “What am I to do ” she thought.Just as she was about to go home, she saw a lady getting out of a car not far away and walking toward the bank in a hurry. The lady opened her handbag to take out some papers, and her wallet fell on the ground. Unaware of it, she went into the bank.Nina ran and picked up the wallet. There were so many people inside the bank that she decided to wait on the steps. After a long time, the lady came out. Nina handed her the wallet that she had dropped. The lady could not believe it. The little girl had been waiting for her for so long to hand her the wallet. She looked at the contents in it, and everything was just the way she had left it.“Thank you, sweetheart. What is your name, and where are you going Can I drop you home ” the lady asked Nina softly.Nina told the lady her name and that she was going home. The lady invited Nina to get into the car. The next morning, Nina nervously entered the boutique. The lady greeted her warmly and handed her the dress. To Nina’s surprise, the old dress had been transformed — its length was perfectly extended with delicate flowers on the sleeves. “I added some adjustments,” the lady smiled. “Kindness deserves beauty.” Nina’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you… but I can’t afford this,” she whispered. The lady gently shook her head. “This is my gift to you. Your honesty moved me.”On Saturday, Nina wore the dress with a fresh new design to Betty’s birthday party. When she entered, everyone gasped. Betty ran over, exclaiming, “You look like a princess!” For the first time in weeks, Nina smiled brightly. When Nina returned home, her father was waiting with tear-filled eyes. “The boutique called,” he said, holding a job offer letter. “They need a delivery driver… and heard I’m good with maps.” That night, Nina hung the transformed dress by her window. The dress was not just fabric; it was a reminder that even in hardship, kindness could make miracles. 展開更多...... 收起↑ 資源預(yù)覽 縮略圖、資源來源于二一教育資源庫
