Young kids only do easy chores. So they don’t get much money. But that’s enough. Many of them only want to buy candy. And candy is cheap! They often help do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pet cat or dog.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass, or cook meals.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”
Recently, a British survey found that electronic(電子的) products in teenagers’ bedrooms are affecting(影響) their sleep.
The survey was done among 1, 000 British kids from 12 to 16. It found that 30% of them got just 4 to 7 hours of sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost a quarter of the kids said they fell asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris Idzikowski, a British expert. “We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is bad, too. If you don’t get a good rest, you don’t perform well in school the next day. ”

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (機會) to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “…little things can change a person’s life.”

Every child has a dream of what he or she wants to be, right When Renee Bunts was little, her dream was to become a firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her father died and she was never able to work with him. Renee’s story doesn’t end there, however, which is why I think of her as a hero. She was strong-minded and never gave up. After graduating from college, she became a real firefighter. She has done very well because she really likes the job.
Every day she must be ready to deal with any emergencies (突發事件). Sometimes Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts (輪班). She also has a family to take care of. Her husband is a firefighter, too.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving their lives. That’s why I love my job.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always glad to do anything for anyone in need. With 140 firefighters in her station, Renee is one of the three women.
(1) Does Renee become a firefighter when she grows up
(2) What was Renee’s father before he died

54.【答案】We had a discussion about whether middle school students should do housework in English class. Some students think there is no need for them to do that because doing housework is a waste of time, and it’s their parents’ job. Some students think they should be paid to do housework.
In my opinion, doing housework is important. First, parents are tired after work. If we can help them with housework, they will feel much better. Second, middle school students can learn some life skills from doing housework. What’s more, doing housework is a good way to develop independence.
In a word, doing housework is good for both students and parents. Therefore, I strongly believe middle school students should do some housework.
