“I was dead for 67 minutes. It's a miracle that I'm here today.” Those are the words of Bruce Richardson, who survived a cardiac arrest(心臟停搏) in July 2016 thanks to the quick actions of his friends and the first responders who refused to give up.
It was an early summer morning, a typical Saturday.Bruce volunteered as usual in the community center. “I had no symptoms that there was any problem. It was a completely normal morning; I felt fine,” he shared. “I was visiting with friends. Then, I passed out. I know what happened next from what others have told me.”
Bruce's friend, Jack, had learned how to perform CPR, and he quickly began chest compressions. Another friend, Doug, dialed 911 and the operator walked him through compressions until first responders arrived. Once the ambulance arrived, the paramedics tried five times to restart Bruce's heart with an AED. By this time, Bruce had been without a heartbeat for over 30 minutes, often when the time of death is called. On the phone with an emergency room doctor, one of the paramedics was instructed to try two AEDs simultaneously(同時).It worked; Bruce's heart began to beat again. Incredibly, he awoke the next day and was able to communicate. After a week, Bruce made a full recovery and left the hospital.
Because of Bruce's cardiac arrest, he has resumed a normal life with some differences. He now is a passionate CPR advocate. He has shared his story in the news, and last year he was a guest speaker at American Heart Association's Indianapolis Heart&Stroke Ball to encourage people to spread the message of CPR. Finally, Bruce shared his story in a video now being used to promote the Association's Hands-Only CPR kiosks installed around the country.

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury before more skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain important signs including the pulse, temperature, an unobstructed(未被阻塞的) airway and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from worsening and provide relief from pain.
First aid must be done as quickly as possible. In the case where the person is badly injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider's level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to the lifelong disability.
Despite the variety of possible injuries, several suggestions should be followed if first aid applies to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and heart trouble. The victim's medical card should be checked that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of the victim's condition to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method of assessing a victim's condition is known as the ABC, which stands for:
A—Airway: Is it open and unobstructed
B—Breathing: Is the person breathing Look, listen, and feel the breath.
C—Circulation(血液循環): Is there a pulse(脈搏) Is the person bleeding badly Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.
28.What is very important in first aid
A.To make it clear what illness the victim has had.
B.To move the injured person from the scene of the accident immediately.
C.To spend a few minutes making the difference between recovery and death.
D.To know what to do and what not to do according to the condition of the victim.
29.Which of the following practices is NOT right in first aid
A.Telephoning a hospital at once.
B.Checking whether the victim is bleeding.
C.Checking whether the victim is breathing.
D.Waiting for medical treatment before giving first aid.

Paris Baker is a 30-year-old mother who has two daughters, Kallie, nine, and Harper, five.
One day, the three were playing at home.Harper was playing Mom, feeding her mother, then her teddy bear and finally herself.Suddenly, Paris started choking on a piece of cookie. Soon, the cookie was at the back of her throat. The two girls started hitting her back at once. After about a minute of hitting her back, Kallie went to call an ambulance as she started to worry. As she did this, the other girl carried on doing what she had been doing and thankfully the cookie finally came up.
Paris was diagnosed(診斷) with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2017, and was told she had five years to live. The condition will gradually paralyse(使……癱瘓) her, leaving her trapped inside her body.
Due to her condition, she's more likely to fall and has received serious injuries. She felt it was very important to teach her girls what to do in a dangerous situation she might be in.This included applying pressure to a bleeding wound, what to do if someone is choking and how to call emergency services.
The girls know that if their dad isn't home and an emergency happens there are three steps.Step one is to ring 999, ask for an ambulance and give their address. Step two is to put their dogs in the garden, and step three is to open the front door for the emergency services.
After the accident, Paris was so grateful that she had taught her daughters what to do in such a situation. But accidents like that can happen to anyone. So if your kid hasn't learned first aid skills yet, it's time to do that now.
32.How did the two girls react as their mother choked
A.They called an ambulance at once.
B.They took action as soon as possible.
C.They were too frightened to do anything.

Most people actually do not know how to do basic first aid on mild burns. It is normally taken for granted since most people think that soaking(浸泡) the burn in water is the way to go. 36
Once the burn appears, you will surely feel much pain in the actual burned skin. Technically, this is the time to stay calm. 37 Finding a source of running water is recommended. However, if there is none, any source will do. If there is running water, simply place the burned area under it and allow it to soak in the water for about 5 to 10 minutes. 38 If you have access to ice or a cold compress(冷敷布), you can use that as well. You can place the ice or cold compress on the affected area and leave it there for about 15 to 30 minutes. The ice will numb the pain and will also stop more injuries to the skin.
After soaking in water or cooling the area with ice, remove it from the water source and allow the moisture(水分) to dry naturally. You may also consider patting it dry with a towel or napkin; however, this could damage the burnt skin even more. 39
As soon as the area dries completely, get a bandage(繃帶) or a strip of cloth. 40 This will protect that area from infection caused by outside dirt and dust getting into the open burn.
A.It is best to dry it naturally instead.
B.Calling a doctor may help in most burn cases.
C.Wrap it around the burn to cover the open area of skin.
D.The first thing you need to do is find a clean water source.
E.The truth is that soaking is the last thing to do to deal with mild burns.
F.This will relieve some of the pain, cool the skin, and stop the additional burn.
G.The thing is that treating a mild burn goes more than just soaking the affected part in water.

第二節(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
Janiece Jenkins is a math teacher at East Orange Community Charter School, New Jersey. She had been certified in CPR(心肺復蘇術) and first aid, 5 years before working here in the school. Because Janiece had never had a chance to put it to use, she almost forgot it after all those years. Recently, the school arranged for all the teachers to take a refresher course. As in the past, Janiece thought little of the first aid knowledge and she never thought she could put it into practice one day. But it happened that way.
On a hot summer afternoon, 9-year-old Robert Stonaker was preparing for his math class when he felt a rush of thirst. He reached for a bottle of water from his school bag. But the cap of the water bottle was too tight, so he struggled to remove it with his mouth. When the third-grader squeezed(擠壓) the bottle, the water pushed the cap down his throat and blocked his airway.
Unable to breathe, Robert got out from his seat in panic and ran over to the sink to see if he could spit the cap out himself. When that didn't work, he ran across the room to ask Janiece for help, pointing to his throat.
The boy couldn't talk. His face was pale, and he was struggling to breathe. Janiece knew from the desperation on his face that he was choking and that he was in bad need of help. At the critical moment, timing is everything.Brain damage starts after approximately four minutes without oxygen.
Thanks to the refresher course, the first aid steps were fresh in Janiece's mind. She stood behind Robert and wrapped her arms around the boy's waist. With one hand made a fist, she pressed hard and quick into his stomach. She pulled inward and upward as she pressed as if she was trying to lift the boy off the ground. After several rounds of pulls and presses, the cap of the water bottle popped out of his mouth.Seeing the cap on the floor, Janiece breathed a big sigh of relief.
注意:續寫詞數應為150個左右。
Then Janiece took Robert to the nearest hospital and telephoned Robert's parents.

Janiece hoped her action would inspire others to get the training to help people in need.
