I was a volunteer with the city of Milpitas and was studying at Mission College. One night after going to class, I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (墨西哥卷餅) restaurant. I got my burrito and started to head for my car when I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I asked him to follow me back into the burrito restaurant to order. He was ashamed of the way he looked and said he did not want to go in there. But I insisted. When he finally followed me in, the people behind the counter (柜臺) refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After we argued over it for a while, they finally gave in. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table. I asked him to order whatever he wanted. But he only ordered a burrito.
For someone who has been on the fringes (邊緣) of society, he was very surprised at my generosity. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. You had to be there to see the look in his face. It reminded me when I was young, my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, chocolate and goodies that we were about to eat. I think he felt special, like he was getting attention, something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
I often think about this story because, to me, it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them. It’s more about giving them the respect and dignity of being a human being and allowing them to feel good about themselves.

Stonehenge is a very famous stone circle located in southern England. For centuries,historians have been extremely confused by it. On Wednesday, researchers brought out new and unexpected information about the six-ton Altar Stone at Stonehenge.
For a long time, people believed that the Altar Stone, which lies in the middle of the well-known circle, came from Wales. However, new research shows that it actually came from Scotland, which is hundreds of miles away. This discovery raises new questions about how people transported the stone about 5,000 years ago. According to a study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, the Altar Stone probably came from the Orcadian Basin in Scotland, at least 466 miles from Stonehenge.
Chris Kirkland, one of the experts, said this discovery of where the Altar Stone came from showed there was a high level of cooperation from local people during the Neolithic period. Moving such a huge stone from Scotland to southern England by land would have been extremely challenging. So, it’s likely they used a shipping route along the British coast.
Stonehenge is mainly made up of two kinds of stones: sarsen (砂巖) and bluestone. The large sarsen stones mostly came from an area about 16 miles north of the monument. The Altar Stone is considered a bluestone. Studies in the past have shown that most of Stonehenge’s bluestones came from Wales. To find out where the Altar Stone came from, geologists examined its chemical characteristics and analyzed the minerals in the rock. They found that the Altar Stone didn’t match the geology of Welsh rocks.
“While we can now say that this iconic rock is Scottish and not Welsh, the research will still very much be on to pin down where exactly in the north-east of Scotland the Altar Stone came from,” study co-author and Aberystwyth University professor Richard Bevins said.
English Heritage, the organization that looks after Stonehenge, called this an exciting discovery. They said in a social media post that the more we learn about Stonehenge, the more questions we get. The purpose of Stonehenge is still a puzzle. Some people think it was built for astronomical (天文的) reasons, while others think it was related to human sacrifice (祭祀).

Killer whales hunt fish with sounds as clicks and buzzes — they choose and chase their prey (獵物) with sound waves. But a common feature of modern ocean life may be like a salmon’s invisible cloak (隱形斗篷), making the whales’ favorite meal harder to find. What is to blame Boat traffic noise.
Ocean noise has been increasing over the years, and an international research team recently reported in Global Change Biology that when the water got too noisy, whales spent more time looking for food but caught fewer fish. The study tracked every move and sound that individual killer whales made, as well as the sound reaching those whales. This is the first time scientists have linked noise reaching a given killer whale to their foraging (覓食) success, says lead author Jennifer Tennessen.
The noise problem is one that Tennessen views as chronic, yet possibly more straightforward to fix than declining fish populations or pollution — ships could simply slow down to make less noise. Fortunately, with the guidance of both governmental and nongovernmental groups, some ship operators are slowing down.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in Canada reported in 2023 that 87 percent of ships slowed or moved over for southern resident whales in critical habitat, which led to a decrease of 4.2 decibels (分貝) compared to 2019, before slowdowns began. Washington ports and other local authorities join in a program of voluntary slowdowns in Washington waters called Quiet Sound, which offers information on killer whale locations. About 70 percent of ships follow Quiet Sound’s guidelines and voluntarily slow down in killer whale critical habitat.
The talk about innovations in propeller (螺旋槳) technology is also positive. A propeller, for example, is based on a design for a quieter drone propeller. If claims of a more efficient and quieter boat propeller are true, that’s good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic.
Tennessen says increasing ship noise is a problem in oceans around the world. “We’re finally able to measure the impacts that it’s having on wildlife,” she says, “and we’re finding that the impacts are numerous.”

“Sell by” and “Best by” are just two of the many confusing terms companies use on food labels to let consumers know when a product will most likely go bad.
