It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we should see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.
Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and—most importantly—sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager of the theater, Mr. Bellow did not mind if you did.
That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We d already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.
We left the theater around 8 p.m., just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke.
Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and James Stewart s dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. They re really memories of the screen, not memories of my life.

A Midsummer Night s Dream may be one of Shakespeare s most performed plays—but its latest version from the Royal Shakespeare Company will be unlike any seen before. Titled Dream, the 50-minute online production will let audiences remotely guide the leading character Puck through a virtual forest.
In 2016, the Royal Shakespeare Company s production of The Tempest used high-tech to create a 3D digital image that was projected above the stage. The difference this time is that everything in the play—the performers and their surroundings—will be shown virtually.
Seven actors will perform in a specially-built studio. They will be surrounded by a 360-degree camera set, made up of 47 cameras with every movement almost immediately presented digitally, which is presented to viewers online. With its much-reduced characters, Dream is not a complete production of A Midsummer Night s Dream; rather, it is a story inspired by it, focusing on Puck and the fairies(精靈).
Up to 2,000 audience members for each performance can become part of the show and will be invited to guide Puck through the forest. On the screen, the chosen audiences will appear as a cloud of tiny fireflies(螢火蟲). By using their mouse or finger on the screen of a smart device, they will be able to move their fireflies across the screen, and Puck will be at their beck and call to go through the virtual space. For viewers watching at home, the virtual fairies moving through a digital forest will look more like a video game than the average Royal Shakespeare Company show.
“Without the fireflies—the audiences—Puck wouldn t be going anywhere,” said E.M. Williams who plays the role. “The audiences are very much the fuel and the energy of the show.”

When I give public lectures about the climate crisis, the most common question people ask is: “Are you an optimist ” My answer is yes. The second most common question is: “What can I, personally, do ”
That s a tough one. About half of all greenhouse gas emissions come from electricity generation and industrial fossil-fuel use. Some people have argued that calls for individual action actually distract us from our company s responsibility. Oil giant BP promoted the idea of carbon footprints, moving attention to its customers who, it suggests, should take personal responsibility by lowering their carbon footprints. One study found that focusing on personal activities would ruin support for more effective policy initiatives(提案) such as a carbon tax.
Another problem with personal behavior is that people do not like to be told what to do. As former congressperson(美國國會議員) Bob Inglis of South Carolina said, people think, “You re saying that I shouldn t have this house in a suburb I shouldn t be driving this car ”
Cutting meat consumption(消耗) is a powerful and personal thing most Americans can do to deal with the climate crisis, and they can do it immediately. About 40 percent of greenhouse gases come from agriculture, deforestation and other land-use changes. Meat—particularly beef—drives climate change in two ways: first, through cows emission of methane(甲烷), and second, by destroying forests as land areas as required for the cows to live on. Despite the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19, atmospheric greenhouse gas levels continued to rise in 2020, in large part because of emission increase in the Amazon rainforest as rain forests were changed into land for cattle to satisfy the global demand for beef. By eating less beef, we can start to reduce that demand.
You do not have to become a vegan(素食主義者) to do this. Cutting back on red meat also has the added benefit of being good for your health. While I wouldn t advise governments to order people to stop eating hamburgers, if anyone asks “What can I do ”, a simple and accurate answer is: “Eat less meat.” It s under your control, and you can begin right now. It benefits both you and the planet.
