An annoying brother or sister may break your toys, but he or she may help you when you are in trouble. A new study suggests that younger siblings might be good for your health.
Children who didn t welcome a baby brother or sister to the family before first grade had almost three times the likelihood of obesity compared with kids who experienced the birth of a sibling when they were around 3 to 4 years old, the study found.
“It is possibly because when there is a younger sibling in the family, a child might become more active—for example, running around more with their younger sibling,” said Julie Lumeng, a public health researcher at the University of Michigan.
“Maybe families are more likely to take the kids to the park when there is a younger sibling, or maybe the child is less likely to sit or watch TV when there is a younger sibling to ask them to join more active pretend play,” she added.
Mealtimes might also be different with a second kid at the table. Parents of an only child can often focus too much on what their kid eats, which can lead to bad eating habits, some previous research suggests.
“When parents use restrictive or pressure-to-eat feeding practices, children have an increased risk of being overweight,” said Jerica Berge, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.
“When a new child is introduced, parents may relax their focus on the older child s eating behaviors, making it possible for the older child to self-regulate their eating,” said Berge. “This self-regulation may lead to a healthier weight for the child with a sibling.”
For their study, Lumeng and colleagues followed 697 US children from birth through age 6. However, the authors acknowledged that their study lacked objectively measured birth weights and information on events such as a divorce, a move or a job loss in the family—all of which can influence the odds of children becoming obese. The secret of eating less and being happy about it may have been cracked years ago—by McDonald s. According to a new study from Cornell University s Food and Brand Lab, small non-food rewards—like the toys in McDonald s Happy Meals—stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried out a series of experiments to see if people would choose a smaller meal if it was paired with a non-food item.
They found that the majority of both kids and adults opted for a half-sized portion when the meal was combined with a prize. Both options were priced the same.
Even more interesting is that the promise of a future reward was enough to make adults choose the smaller portion. One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket, with a $10, $50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading people to eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing to substitute the mere prospect of a relatively small monetary award for part of a food item is interesting,” says Reimann.
He theorizes that it is the emotional components of these intangible prizes that make them effective. In fact, vaguely-stated possibilities of winning a prize were more effective than options with hard odds included.
“One explanation for this finding is that possible awards may be more emotionally provoking than certain awards,” says Reimann. “The uncertainty of winning prizes provides added attraction and desirability through emotional ‘thrills’. The possibility of receiving an award also produces a state of hope—a state that is in itself psychologically rewarding.” In other words, there s a reason why people like to gamble.
How could this knowledge be used to help people eat more healthily
One possibility is a healthy option that offers the chance to win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date. That would get you back in the restaurant and make you eat a little less.

“This is your present and it belongs to you,” said my mother. I was stopped by my mother s eager, joyful look. “Let s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it.” It was a blow-dryer. Though this might seem nothing but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was extremely surprised. In my world, where receiving largely outweighed giving, my mom s selfless behavior was impossible to understand. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas gift so that I could have one more present.
That Christmas is quite meaningful to me. I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life, I can now understand my mom s actions. I see, actually, she was not “giving up her Christmas present” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom s simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom s giving, I will choose to give in my life.
