In England, a zoo has come up with a really great idea. It is asking the public to donate their used Christmas trees. These trees are not for decoration but a key element in improving the lives of a diverse range of animals, including bears, elephants, and meerkats(狐獴).
The Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in Bristol has been running this tree-donation program for five years. After the Christmas holidays, most Christmas trees end up in landfills. However, this zoo has managed to save 15,000 trees from becoming landfill waste, but the real joy is the holiday spirit these trees bring to the local animals.
The zoo’s curator(園長), Chris Wilkinson, says the trees make a significant impact on the animals’ lives. Some animals, like elephants, enjoy eating them, while other animals, like the Andean bears and rhinos, like to explore them and search for hidden food. For smaller animals, these trees provide a perfect spot for fun and exploration.
“These meerkats live in groups,” explains Larry Bush, one of the farm's wildlife biologists. “So when we add something new like these Christmas trees inside their space, they explore the trees and use all of their senses to explore this new enrichment.”
“For the elephants, their habitat is full of sand, so we bury the trees in the sand and stand them up to make a whole forest for them to explore,” Wilkinson said. “They’ll eat them a bit, throw them around and search for the food we put in.”
This year, they did the same for their Andean bears, small members of the species from the Andes Mountains, Instead of piling all the trees, they created a small forest for the bears to enjoy. The bears treat the trees the same way dogs treat a pile of leaves in the fall— full of fun and surprises.

Recently, Robot Era, a Chinese robotics company, introduced STAR1, the world's fastest two-legged robot. It can reach and maintain speeds of up to 8 mph (13km/h)—matching the pace of a jogging human. Videos showing this sneaker-wearing machine racing across China's Gobi Desert quickly spread online, with many social media users humorously asking, “Do robots need shoes now ” However, few realized they were seeing a groundbreaking invention— the fastest humanoid robot ever built.
Developed by Robot Era, STAR1 uses powerful motors and AI programs to handle all sorts of surfaces and environments, including sand and grassland. Its secret speed boost comes from an unexpected feature —— ordinary running shoes. While equipped with advanced sensors that scan its surroundings instantly, the robot’s simple footwear helps it run faster than even advanced “barefoot” competitors.
Standing 5.6 feet tall and weighing 143 pounds, STAR1 can run at 3.6 meters per second. Scientists discovered that the robot achieved this impressive speed through the pair of running shoes, which made a big difference. In a test, the sneaker-wearing robot was considerably faster than its “barefoot” competitor, even though it got off to a slower start. The sneaker-wearing robot dealt with the difficult terrain(地形) of the Gobi Desert better and finished in front.

New research suggests male mosquitoes may be nearly as blood-thirsty as females under certain conditions.
Entomologist Jason Rasgon from Penn State and his team observed that male Culex tarsalis(西方庫蚊) and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes(埃及伊蚊), which usually avoid blood, would drink it when lacking water and nectar(花蜜). The study, posted on bioRxiv.org on October 8, suggests that males might not be as harmless as previously believed. The discovery began when a graduate student observed male mosquitoes feeding on blood through a thin artificial membrane(膜) after their usual food and water were removed. Intrigued, Rasgon conducted an experiment to see if they would bite humans by placing his hand in a cage containing male mosquitoes.
“Male mosquitoes with enough water drank less blood, but thirsty ones landed on my skin and tried to bite,” Rasgon said. “One even bit me, but only went through the very top layer of skin. This was surprising!”
Male mosquitoes can't bite people well because their mouthparts aren't strong enough to enter the skin deeply. However, when Rasgon had a small scratch from his cat, a thirsty male drew blood from the wound.
Further experiments demonstrated that genetically modified(基因改造的) male mosquitoes, unable to sense thirst, did not attempt to drink blood. This means male mosquitoes probably only drink blood when they're extremely thirsty.
Previously, scientists believed male mosquitoes were unable to digest blood, as it was considered poisonous to them. However, Rasgon's team found that male Culex tarsalis feeding only on blood lived as long as—— or slightly longer than— those without it.
In nature, female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the main carriers of yellow fever, and can also spread Zika virus (寨卡病毒) and dengue(登革熱), while female Culex tarsalis mosquitoes can spread West Nile virus and related diseases. The researchers have found male Culex tarsalis mosquitoes can be infected with West Nile and produce infectious virus in their saliva(唾液) just like females can. So in theory, males could spread diseases.
