In England, a zoo has come up with a really great idea. It is asking the public to donate their used Christmas trees. These trees are not for decoration but a key element in improving the lives of a diverse range of animals, including bears, elephants, and meerkats (狐獴) .
The Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Bristol has been running this tree-donation program for five years. After the Christmas holidays, most Christmas trees end up in landfills. However, this zoo has managed to save 15,000 trees from becoming landfill waste, but the real joy is the holiday spirit these trees bring to the local animals.
The zoo’s curator (園長) , Chris Wilkinson, says the trees make a significant impact on the animals’ lives. Some animals, like elephants, enjoy eating them, while other animals, like the Andean bears and rhinos, like to explore them and search for hidden food. For smaller animals, these trees provide a perfect spot for fun and exploration.
“These meerkats live in groups,” explains Larry Bush, one of the farm’s wildlife biologists. “So when we add something new like these Christmas trees inside their space, they explore the trees and use all of their senses to explore this new enrichment.”
“For the elephants, their habitat is full of sand, so we bury the trees in the sand and stand them up to make a whole forest for them to explore,” Wilkinson said. “They’ll eat them a bit, throw them around and search for the food we put in.”
This year, they did the same for their Andean bears, small members of the species from the Andes Mountains, Instead of piling all the trees, they created a small forest for the bears to enjoy. The bears treat the trees the same way dogs treat a pile of leaves in the fall — full of fun and surprises.
24.Why does the Noah’s Ark Zoo have the used Christmas trees donated
A.To reduce waste through recycling.
B.To replace natural forests in the zoo.
C.To decorate the zoo for the holidays.
D.To better various animals’ life quality.
25.How do meerkats react with the donated Christmas trees
A.They search for hidden treats among them.
B.They show their curiosity and explore.
C.They eat them as their own food.
D.They avoid interaction with them.
26.What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A.The donation works for elephants.
B.Volunteers plant trees for elephants.
C.Elephants enjoy habitats with sand.
D.Trees are a key source of elephants’ food.
27.What does “a pile of leaves in the fall” mean to bears
A.Their materials to build homes.
B.Their warmth in winter.
C.Their source of enjoyment.
D.Their food in the fall.
Recently, Robot Era, a Chinese robotics company, introduced STAR1, the world’s fastest two-legged robot. It can reach and maintain speeds of up to 8 mph (13km/h) — matching the pace of a jogging human. Videos showing this sneaker-wearing machine racing across China’s Gobi Desert quickly spread online, with many social media users humorously asking, “Do robots need shoes now ” However, few realized they were seeing a groundbreaking invention — the fastest humanoid robot ever built.
Developed by Robot Era, STAR1 uses powerful motors and AI programs to handle all sorts of surfaces and environments, including sand and grassland. Its secret speed boost comes from an unexpected feature — ordinary running shoes. While equipped with advanced sensors that scan its surroundings instantly, the robot’s simple footwear helps it run faster than even advanced “barefoot” competitors.
Standing 5.6 feet tall and weighing 143 pounds, STAR1 can run at 3.6 meters per second. Scientists discovered that the robot achieved this impressive speed through the pair of running shoes, which made a big difference. In a test, the sneaker-wearing robot was considerably faster than its “barefoot” competitor, even though it got off to a slower start. The sneaker-wearing robot dealt with the difficult terrain (地形) of the Gobi Desert better and finished in front.
STAR1 now outruns other famous robots like Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas. Robot Era made great progress by improving movement techniques rather than creating new technology. The running shoes work like athletic footwear, helping push off the ground more effectively while keeping balance.
The company believes such robots could eventually help with dangerous tasks in extreme environments, such as disaster rescue or space exploration. By combining smart engineering with simple solutions like ordinary footwear, Chinese scientists have taken an important step toward more practical humanoid robots.
28.Which is the feature of STAR1
A.It uses advanced barefoot technology.
B.It’s taller than Tesla’s Optimus robot.
C.It’s designed for desert exploration.
D.It wears sneakers for faster speed.
29.How did STA R1 perform in the Gobi Desert test
A.It failed because of its slow start.
B.It beat shoeless robots with ease.
C.It struggled with the rough terrain.
D.It took the lead when the test began.
30.What did Robot Era do after STAR1
A.It created new technology to test its work.
B.It bettered movement methods for the robots.
C.It focused on robot research for social security.
D.It attempted to increase its weight significantly.
31.Which could be the most suitable title of the passage

New research suggests male mosquitoes may be nearly as blood-thirsty as females under certain conditions.
Entomologist Jason Rasgon from Penn State and his team observed that male Culex tarsalis (西方庫蚊) and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (埃及伊蚊), which usually avoid blood, would drink it when lacking water and nectar (花蜜). The study, posted on bioRxiv.org on October 8, suggests that males might not be as harmless as previously believed. The discovery began when a graduate student observed male mosquitoes feeding on blood through a thin artificial membrane (膜) after their usual food and water were removed. Intrigued, Rasgon conducted an experiment to see if they would bite humans by placing his hand in a cage containing male mosquitoes.
“Male mosquitoes with enough water drank less blood, but thirsty ones landed on my skin and tried to bite,” Rasgon said. “One even bit me, but only went through the very top layer of skin. This was surprising!”
Male mosquitoes can’t bite people well because their mouthparts aren’t strong enough to enter the skin deeply. However, when Rasgon had a small scratch from his cat, a thirsty male drew blood from the wound.
Further experiments demonstrated that genetically modified (基因改造的) male mosquitoes, unable to sense thirst, did not attempt to drink blood. This means male mosquitoes probably only drink blood when they’re extremely thirsty.
Previously, scientists believed male mosquitoes were unable to digest blood, as it was considered poisonous to them. However, Rasgon’s team found that male Culex tarsalis feeding only on blood lived as long as — or slightly longer than — those without it.
In nature, female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the main carriers of yellow fever, and can also spread Zika virus (寨卡病毒) and dengue (登革熱), while female Culex tarsalis mosquitoes can spread West Nile virus and related diseases. The researchers have found male Culex tarsalis mosquitoes can be infected with West Nile and produce infectious virus in their saliva (唾液) just like females can. So in theory, males could spread diseases.
32.What did people believe previously about mosquitoes
A.Only females drank blood and spread diseases.
B.Thirsty males always drank human blood.
C.Males played key roles in virus spread.
D.Females could hardly digest blood.
33.What does the underlined word “Intrigued” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Risky. B.Brave.
C.Determined. D.Curious.
34.What’s the passage mainly about
A.Experiments about mosquitoes’ biting habits.
B.The diseases female mosquitoes can spread.
C.Male mosquitoes’ blood-drinking behavior.
D.Female mosquitoes’ virus-carrying potential.
35.What will Rasgon’s team probably do next in the study
A.Analyze how people get mosquitoes removed.
B.Research how mosquitoes’ mouthparts change.
C.Examine if male mosquitoes digest blood safely.
D.Study if male mosquitoes spread virus in reality.

When my little brother Tom turned five, our lives changed forever. One rainy night, his legs stopped working. At first, we thought he just slept in a funny way. But the next morning, he still couldn’t move them. That day started our family’s three years of hospital visits and many questions. Mom carried Tom everywhere in an old blue backpack. Our old dog Bingo followed her everywhere, as if understanding something was wrong.
For the first few weeks, Tom could move slowly if he held onto walls. But by Christmas, even sitting made him shake. Doctors used big words we didn’t understand and took lots of blood. Finally, they said, “His legs might never work again.” That night, I watched Dad hit the kitchen wall hard. His fists made marks that are still there today.
What surprised everyone was Tom himself. He cried when he saw needles, but he smiled and waved at the nurses. “Look, I’m a kangaroo baby!” he said from Mom’s backpack. The doctors laughed. His favorite game was “Super Tom.” He would throw his arms out like he was flying while Mom carried him with Bingo jumping.
The hardest moment came on my birthday. Mom was cutting cake when Tom spilled juice on his pants. “I’ ll clean it!” he said, sliding off his chair. His legs gave out right away. Mom ran to help, and he whispered, “Sorry that I ruined your party.” That night, I heard her crying in the laundry room. Bingo sat beside her as if to comfort her.
But Tom never gave up. One afternoon, he pulled Mom’s sleeve while she was washing dishes. “Watch this!” he said. He leaned against the fridge and stood for five seconds before falling into a pile of towels. Mom cried as she hugged him. “I’ll run to the park one day!” he promised, even though his legs shook like jelly (果凍). After hearing what he said, I thought it’s time that I should do something for him.

The bears treat the trees the same way dogs treat a pile of leaves in the fall— full of fun and surprises.(今年,他們也為安第斯熊做了同樣的事情,安第斯熊是安第斯山脈物種的一小部分,他們沒有把所有的樹都堆起來,而是為熊創造了一個小森林。 可知,“a pile of leaves in the fall”對熊而言是“樂趣的來源”。

根據第二段中“Its secret speed boost comes from an unexpected feature — ordinary running shoes. While equipped with advanced sensors that scan its surroundings instantly, the robot’s simple footwear helps it run faster than even advanced ‘barefoot’ competitors.(它提高速度的秘訣來自一個意想不到的特點——普通跑鞋。雖然配備了能立即掃描周圍環境的先進傳感器,但這款機器人簡單的鞋子甚至能讓它比先進的‘赤腳’競爭對手跑得更快)”可知,STAR1的特點是穿運動鞋來提升速度。故選D項。
29.細節理解題。根據第三段中“In a test, the sneaker wearing robot was considerably faster than its ‘barefoot’ competitor, even though it got off to a slower start. The sneaker wearing robot dealt with the difficult terrain (地形) of the Gobi Desert better and finished in front.(在一次測試中,穿運動鞋的機器人雖然起步較慢,但比它的‘赤腳’競爭對手快得多。穿運動鞋的機器人能更好地應對戈壁沙漠的復雜地形,并率先到達終點)”可知,STAR1在戈壁沙漠測試中輕松擊敗了不穿鞋子的機器人。故選B項。
30.細節理解題。根據第四段中“Robot Era made great progress by improving movement techniques rather than creating new technology. The running shoes work like athletic footwear, helping push off the ground more effectively while keeping balance.(Robot Era公司通過改進運動技術而非創造新技術取得了巨大進步。跑鞋的工作原理類似于運動鞋,有助于更有效地蹬離地面,同時保持平衡)”可知,Robot Era公司改進了機器人的運動方法。故選B項。
31.主旨大意題。通讀全文,結合第一段中“Recently, Robot Era, a Chinese robotics company, introduced STAR1, the world’s fastest two legged robot.(最近,中國機器人公司Robot Era推出了世界上最快的雙足機器人STAR1)”和最后一段中“By combining smart engineering with simple solutions like ordinary footwear, Chinese scientists have taken an important step toward more practical humanoid robots.(通過將智能工程與普通鞋類等簡單解決方案相結合,中國科學家向更實用的類人機器人邁出了重要一步)”可知,文章主要介紹STAR1作為全球最快人形機器人的突破性成就,重點強調其速度優勢和歷史意義。 故選A項。

根據第一段中 “The study, posted on bioRxiv.org on October 8, suggests that males might not be as harmless as previously believed.(這項10月8日發表在bioRxiv.org上的研究表明,雄性蚊子可能并不像之前認為的那樣無害)”和第六段中 “Previously, scientists believed male mosquitoes were unable to digest blood (此前科學家認為雄性蚊子不能消化血液)”可知,人們過去認為雄性蚊子無害且不能消化血液,也就是說只有雌性蚊子吸血并傳播疾病。故選A項。
根據第二段中“The discovery began when a graduate student observed male mosquitoes feeding on blood through a thin artificial membrane after their usual food and water were removed. Intrigued, Rasgon conducted an experiment to see if they would bite humans by placing his hand in a cage containing male mosquitoes.(這一發現始于一名研究生觀察到,在去除雄性蚊子通常的食物和水后,它們通過一層薄薄的人造膜吸食血液。
根據最后一段中“The researchers have found male Culex tarsalis mosquitoes can be infected with West Nile and produce infectious virus in their saliva just like females can.

故填that / which。
故填The。
故填were trapped。
both... and... 故填and。
be ready to do sth. 故填to save。
66.Dear schoolmates,
Today I’d like to share with you my journey from fear to strength.
Last year, I faced my biggest challenge— public speaking. During a class presentation, my voice shook so violently that I could hardly say anything. Noticing my nervousness, all my classmates simply smiled and clapped to cheer me up. Their sincere smile and encouragement helped me finish my presentation.
I share this because it taught me courage is the belief that growth begins at the end of your comfort zone. Now I am standing here to prove that small acts of support can turn trembling knees into steady steps. Let’s embrace challenges and face our fear bravely—they’re where we discover our strength.
That’s all for my sharing. Thank you!
67.
So I used Mom’s clothesline (晾衣繩) and cushions (墊子) to offer help in our backyard. I tied the clothesline between two trees and placed the cushions along the ground. At first, Tom’s legs trembled as he inched forward, sweat on his forehead. Our old dog Bingo barked to cheer him on. It was slow work. Tom would take half a step before falling onto the cushions. But he never complained. “I’ll run to the park one day!” he said, his eyes full of hope and determination. Every day we practiced — rain or shine — with the clothesline swaying like a bridge to his courage.
One sunny afternoon, something amazing happened. Tom let go of the rope mid-step, his legs shaking but his eyes steady. Then, to our shock, he took two more steps before falling into Mom’s arms. My family cheered, including Bingo. “I made it!” Tom shouted with pride. From that day on, Tom could walk further with a little help. By his next birthday, we celebrated with a big cake and the marks Dad made on the kitchen wall years ago seemed to fade that day — replaced by the sight of Tom, our “Super Tom.” We realized even the hardest challenges could be overcome with perseverance and determination.
