In the remote town of Yangla, located over 3,000 meters above sea level in the mountains of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, 32-year-old doctor Nasheng is devoted to providing healthcare to more than 5,400 villagers.
Nasheng graduated in Tibetan medicine from Qinghai University in Qinghai Province. Her passion for the field was inspired after witnessing the difficulties faced by her fellow villagers. “I saw how difficult it was for my family to access medical treatment in inland areas — long journeys, language barriers, and cultural differences made it even harder,” she said.
When she arrived at the Yangla Town health center in September 2021, she was struck by the isolation (隔絕) of the area. Her accommodation is a simple room inside the inpatient ward. Other than a barbecue restaurant, there are no other entertainment options in town.
Although Yangla Town has a small population, its villages are spread across more than 1,000 square kilometers, often requiring several hours of travel by car to reach each one.
This made Nasheng aware that even though the village had a health station, many residents still struggled to reach it due to the area’s vastness. “What if there were another station here ” she wondered. After submitting a proposal, and with support from the local government, a basic health station was established in June 2022. “Now the service station has moved into a new building, and a village doctor is seeing patients there,” Nasheng said. The Yangla Town health center also organizes mobile free clinics in different villages every month, supported by a committed team of over 20 staff members.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her studies. “I want to pursue a master’s degree and learn more about acupuncture (針灸) techniques,” she said. “But no matter what, I’ll always come back — this is my home.”

Musicality may have emerged in a common ancestor of chimps (大猩猩) and humans, as both species share similarities in how they drum (打鼓).
Catherine Hobaiter at the University of St Andrews, UK, and her teammates examined 371 examples of drumming from two of Africa’s four chimp subspecies: the western chimp and the eastern chimp. They observed that chimps use their hands and feet to produce rapid-fire drumming, often on buttress roots, during activities like resting, travelling or making threat displays. The researchers found that chimps drum much faster than most humans. “The longest drum we recorded was over 5 seconds, while the shortest was less than 0.1 seconds,” says Hobaiter.
Despite these differences chimps show some of the core building blocks of human musical rhythm (節(jié)奏), says team member Vesta Eleuteri at the University of Vienna, Austria .“They drum with rhythm, as opposed to randomly, and they use a typical rhythm observed across musical cultures called isochrony, consisting of hits that are regularly spaced, like the ticking of a clock.” The team also found that the two subspecies drummed with different rhythms.
Miguel Llorente at the University of Girona in Spain says the idea that different subspecies show distinct drumming styles is appealing. “It opens the door to thinking about these patterns not just as individual habits, but potentially as cultural differences in how groups use drumming as a communicative tool.”
“We don’t mean that chimp drumming shows the complexity of modern human musical rhythms,” says Hobaiter. “But this is the first time that we’ve been able to show that they share the same rhythmic building blocks, making it likely that rhythm was a part of our social world long before we became human.” “Until recently, it was argued that rhythmicity was unique to humans,” says Gisela Kaplan at the University of New England, Australia. “We now have plenty of evidence that this is not the case.”

Learning how to regulate negative emotions like anxiety could ease chronic (慢性的) pain. Scientists have found that a form of therapy (療法) that partly focuses on tolerating pain relieved ongoing discomfort more effectively than existing treatments.
“Chronic pain is more than a sensory experience; it’s incredibly emotional,” says Nell Norman-Nott at the University of New South Wales, Australia. “We see increased levels of anxiety and depression in up to about 80 percent of people with chronic pain.” This leads to a “vicious cycle”, where pre-pain increases negative emotions, which then worsen pain, she says.
To see if they could break the cycle, Norman-Nott and her team used a programme that focused on mindfulness, emotion regulation and pain tolerance. Eighty-nine people with chronic pain, lasting 16 years on average, were randomised to receive either the programme, delivered by a therapist through an eight-week online course, while continuing with any treatments they were already receiving, such as medication or physical therapy, or to just continue with their usual treatment.
Nine weeks later, those in the therapy group experienced an improvement in emotional regulation of about 5 points more than those in the control group. The intensity of their pain also started to lessen at week 9, and by 21 weeks they experienced significantly less pain than those in the control group.
“I think that’s interesting and promising,” says Benedict Alter at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It could also help people with limited access to inperson care, he says. “It’s great that they did this as internet-based. It’s a huge problem that there are small numbers of providers who do therapy, and they tend to be in urban areas.”
Exactly how the therapy reduces pain is unclear, says Alter, but “at any given pain intensity, if you had better emotional regulation, people’s overall lives would be better: less suffering, less functional limitation. I think pain intensity decreases as everything gets better.” The mechanism could be uncovered in larger studies, he says.

Once the coaches and the players sized up my abilities, they would determine the position I’d play. Surprisingly, no one else showed up to compete for that position, so without question, it was mine.
I couldn’t have been happier! They took my shirt size, number and my team name. I chose “Mama Platt” because it is what a couple of the students called me, and I chose my dad’s football number from high school: 74. I still remember the moment when I stood in a sport ing goods store picking out athletic shoes. Was this really happening I couldn’t believe it.
