It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: by watching the Perseid meteor (流星)
shower. But this year was different. At 23, I was away from my family for the first time, farther from where
I grew up. I was starting my graduate degree in pharmacy (藥學) , and was driven to become a pharmacist
like my best friend’s dad, one of the few professional role models available. I completed my bachelor’s
degree at a university just down the road from my parents’ house and started at the University of North
Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
But now, watching the meteors across the black sky, I began to question that path. Could my lifelong
love for astronomy be more than a pastime
Accidentally, another event helped me make a decision: a solar eclipse (日食) , whose path of totality
included the Blue Ridge Mountains where I grew up. I skipped class and made the trip along the winding
mountain roads. Finally, the world around me became dark. The water was still, the birds were chaotic, and
the sunset surrounded me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out of pharmacy school to pursue previously
unimagined options.
The next 4 years were some of the most challenging of my life. I worked various jobs: driving for
Uber, hosting at restaurants, folding clothes at stores. I became a post-baccalaureate (學士后) student and
spared an hour to attend classes every day. I got a job as a teaching assistant and conducted research. I
eventually graduated with a second bachelor’s degree, in physics, and began a Ph.D. program in astronomy.
Now, about to start my final year of my Ph.D., I realize that my exposure to the night sky growing up
gave me a great gift. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self-doubt to stand in the way
of going after new dreams.

While diving in the Mediterranean Sea, scientists noticed something curious: Every field season,
groups of local fish called seabream would follow them around, stealing food intended as rewards for other
fish in their experiments.
The seabream seemed to recognize the divers and even appeared to know which individual humans
were most likely to be carrying food. So, a team, led by Ma lan Tomasek, a researcher at the Max Planck
Institute of Animal Behavior, designed a study published in the journal Biology Letters.
In the first stage of the experiment, Katinka Soller spent 12 days training seabream to follow her
around. At first, she wore bright red and fed the fish as she swam. But in repeated trials, she gradually
shifted to wearing plainer. “Once I entered the water, it was a matter of seconds before I would see them
swimming towards me, seemingly coming out of nowhere,” Soller says. But in the second stage, Tomasek
joined Soller, wearing differently colored outfit. On the first day, the fish followed both Tomasek and Soller
equally. But the fish slowly realized that Tomasek never fed them, and more of them started to follow
Soller.
“This is a cool result, because it shows that fish were not simply following Soller out of habit or
because other fish were there,” says Tomasek. “They were aware of both divers, learning that Soller
produced the reward at the end of the swim.”
When the divers wore identical outfit, however, the fish were seemingly unable to tell them apart. The
researchers say this is evidence that the fish were using visual signs, like the color of wetsuits, to
differentiate between the scientists. Senior author Alex Jordan, a researcher of the team, says that humans
underestimate the abilities of fish. “It really shows that we have strong misconceptions of fish capacity.”
Tomasek hopes the study could make humans reconsider the way they treat fish. “It’s very human to
not want to care about them, but they can care about us; maybe it’s time that we can care about them, too,”
he says to the Guardian.

The advancements in the E-Skin include ultra-rapid self-healing capabilities, reliable performance
under extreme conditions, integration with advanced artificial intelligence and highly accurate health
monitoring systems. These features enable real-time monitoring of tiredness and muscle strength
assessment with exceptional precision, making it highly attractive for a broad range of applications.
“What makes this breakthrough particularly exciting is its immediate practical implications,” added
Ali Khademhosseini, the CEO of TIBI. “We’ve created a technology that not only survives daily wear and
tear but continues to provide accurate health monitoring even in challenging conditions like underwater
environments. This durability (耐用性) opens up entirely new possibilities for personal health monitoring.”
This self-healing capability addresses a common limitation in current wearable technologies, which often
fail when damaged and significantly hinder their practical application.
The research team envisions numerous applications for their technology, ranging from monitoring
athletic performance to aiding in medical recovery and general health tracking, promising to make
