Renee Fluker was a full-time social worker for the state of Michigan when one day her teenage son made a remark (評論) that stayed with her. Her son, one of only a few Blacks on his Detroit high-school golf team, said: It would be great if other Black kids learned how to play golf (高爾夫) and afterward attended college.
The 69-year-old Fluker was inspired by that thought and finally founded the nonprofit that she runs today, the College Career & Beyond Midnight Golf Program. “Playing golf at night is impossible unless someone shines a light,” She says, “That’s exactly what we do, we use golf to create possibilities, helping young people see a brighter future.”
At first, she struggled to find students. What finally worked, Fluker says, was offering free pizza at a community center. Along with their pizza, the students got free golf lessons and listened to talks about college and careers (職業(yè)). In 2001 the group had 17 students. Last year, 250 seniors from 76 southeast Michigan high schools were selected from the about 2,000 who applied. In recent years, the students have attended special classes at the School at Marygrove. Volunteers teach the students such skills as writing résumés and college applications. The golf lessons are taught by professionals from the PGA of America, an organization to grow interest and participation in golf.
So far, Midnight Golf graduates have attended more than 130 colleges, says Fluker, who adds she is moved to tears thinking of their success stories, including one of her first students, who grew up in public housing, attended Howard University and earned a Ph.D. in nursing.
Fluker says being around so many young people helps to keep her feeling young. She says her friends called her “crazy” for not enjoying her retirement years. But thanks to it, many people have been helped.
24. What inspired Fluker to start the Midnight Golf Program
A. Black kids’ love for golf. B. Her desire for money.
C. Her work experience. D. Her son’s words.
25. How did Fluker attract students to join in the program
A. By teaching golf skills. B. By providing pizza for free.
C. By delivering speeches. D. By offering application tips.
26. Which word can best describe Fluker
A. Helpful. B. Energetic. C. Confident. D. Cheerful.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Golf: More Than a Game B. Social Workers: Society’s Light
C. Night Golf, Bright Futures D. Retire from Work, Not from Life

Why do some people always get lost while others navigate (導(dǎo)航) effortlessly Research suggests that experience plays a bigger role than natural talent in developing a sense of direction. Scientists have studied how people find their way by observing them in virtual environments or real-life tasks. For example, subjects might be asked to point to an unseen location or imagine being somewhere else and direct a third spot. Results show wide differences: Some people are highly correct, while others seem to guess anyhow.
A key factor is how you grew up. A 2020 virtual navigation test conducted by Queen Mary University of London on over 2,600 pairs of twins found that genetics (遺傳學(xué)) explained only 30-40% of differences in navigation skills, while nonshared environmental factors accounted for 60-70%. Follow-up interviews showed these often included childhood experiences like cycling to school or family travel. This suggests good navigators develop through lived experience.
Cultural background also matters. In Nordic countries, where orienteering (a sport connecting running and navigation) is popular, people tend to perform better. People in the countryside did better, on average, than people from cities. And those from cities with hard street arrangements such as those in the older parts of European cities outperform those from cities like Chicago, where the streets form a regular grid (棋盤), perhaps because people of grid cities don’t need to build such difficult mind pictures.
To improve navigation skills, experts recommend targeted practice that strengthens both route-following and direction memory abilities. While GPS can be helpful, overusing it may weaken your natural navigation ability. Instead, observe noticeable things like buildings, bus stops, and street patterns to understand how locations connect. Doing this often helps build a clearer picture in the mind. Remember that navigation is a learnable skill — even poor navigators can improve their abilities with effort.
28. What is the finding about navigation research
A. Virtual trainings work effectively. B. Natural talent counts more.
C. Real-life tasks affect significantly. D. Lived experience matters most.
29. How does the author support his opinion in paragraph 2
A. By conducting a field study. B. By giving a definition.
C. By quoting research findings. D. By making an assumption.
30. What does the underlined word “outperform” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Fall behind. B. Do better than. C. Match equally. D. Keep up with.
31. What tip do experts share with poor navigators
A Follow one’s own sense of direction. B. Use GPS as much as possible.
C. Draw simple maps while walking. D. Practice observing landmarks.
D
Wildfires have recently destroyed regions across the world, and their severity (嚴(yán)重性) is increasing. Hoping to reduce harm, researchers led by Yapei Wang, a chemist at Renmin University of China, say they have developed an inexpensive sensor (感應(yīng)器) to detect such fire earlier with less effort.
Current detection (發(fā)現(xiàn)) methods rely heavily on human watchfulness, which can put off an effective response. Most wildfires are reported by the general public, and other warnings come from routine foot checks and watch tower observers. Passing planes and satellites also sometimes find something, but “the fire first appears on the ground,” Wang says. “When you see the fire from the sky... it is too late.”
The team says its new sensor can be placed near trees’ bases and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is a striking temperature increase. That heat also powers the sensor itself, removing the need to use batteries. The key is molten salts called ionic liquids: a sudden temperature change causes electrons to move within the liquids, creating electrical energy that causes electrodes to send the signal. The team printed those onto ordinary paper to create a sensor for just $0.40, as described in June in ACS Applied Materials &Interfaces.
Jessica McCarty, a geographer at Miami University in Ohio, who didn’t conduct the study, says places such as San Diego — where wildland and city meet — could potentially benefit from sensors like this. When a fire breaks out in a faraway place that impacts someone’s house, she says, with such a sensor, “you know that as a homeowner before the fire agency may have detected it.”
Wang says his team’s next steps are to widen the sensor’s signal range beyond the current 100 meters, which can limit practical use, and to develop a protective cover for it.
32. What is the most striking advantage of the new sensor
A. Quick to use. B. Easy to produce.
C. Green materials. D. Immediate fire detection.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The process of creating the sensor. B. The science behind the sensor.
C. The method of improving the sensor. D. The disadvantage of the sensor.
34. Why does the author mention Jessica McCarty
A. To present the user’s experience. B. To stress the benefit of the sensor.
C. To prove the limitation of the sensor. D. To praise the fire agency’s performance.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To introduce a fire sensor. B. To advertise a new type of sensor.
C. To show the seriousness of wildfire. D. To raise the awareness of wildfire fighting.

【71題答案】
【答案】Dear Linda,
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese traditional festivals, I’m happy to introduce to you my favorite festival, which is Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
The most exciting activity is dragon boat racing, where teams paddle to the beat of drums. Besides, people eat zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) and hang mugwort leaves for good luck. People celebrate this festival in honor of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet. Also, the festival symbolizes courage and teamwork.
What’s your favorite holiday Looking forward to your rely!
Yours,
