If you live near a body of water in the northern place, you likely have heard of your local polar bear club, usually made up of a group of strong swimmers who take part in cold water swimming. Submerging (浸入) in cold water dates back to ancient civilizations, with the first documented evidence appearing in an Egyptian text in 3,000 BC. Fast forward to modern times, a group of swimmers founded the first cold water swimming organization in the U.S. in 1903. Today, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club still holds weekly ocean swims from November to April.
Cold-water swimmers say that swimming in icy water is good for you. It helps reduce muscle pain, improves sleep, and increases your energy. But what does the evidence say A growing body of research proves that jumping into cold water is good for you, especially for your feeling and how well your brain works.
In a study published this year in the journal Physiology & Behavior, 13 healthy subjects submerged themselves in 10-degree Celsius water for 10 minutes, three times per week. Researchers measured participants’ (參與者) mental performance, self-reported well-being, sleep quality and worry. They found participants’ thinking processing speed and mental flexibility improved over the four weeks of the study. Participants said they had less trouble sleeping and felt less worried.

The next morning, Sophie and Aiden worked together to plant the young tree. They carefully dug a hole, placed the young tree in it, and filled it with soil. And then they watered it. As they stood back to admire their work, Sophie felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that while the old tree was gone, its spirit lived on in the new one, and in the hearts of all who had known and loved it. Aiden placed a comforting arm around her shoulder, and together, they walked away, leaving the new tree to grow in the park.
