(2024·深圳模擬)Lord Norman Foster, renowned as one of the world's foremost architects, has devoted decades to redefining the concept of tall buildings. "What we've done is create a sense of identify draw n from real needs," Foster said. "It's not a fashionable idea, but generated from the realities we were in." His masterpiece includes iconic structures such as the HSBC building in Hong Kong. Now, he's set his sights on Qatar.
Currently nearing completion and set to reach a height of 301 meters, Foster's Lusail Towers are ready to claim the title of Oatar's tallest buildings. Lusail Towers are intended to serve as a center for Oatar's financial institutions, with four distinctive blocks, two standing at 70 stories and two at 50 stories.
But the construction itself wasn't all plain sailing. To address the unique challenges presented by Oatar's hot climate, Foster's team had to depart from the materials commonly used in skyscrapers in cooler countries—— part of what Foster called a decades- long quest to "reinvent the tall building." The design combines advanced shading with ventilation (通風), while the towers' surfaces are coated with "marine- grade" aluminum (鋁) that wraps around the buildings, protecting the glass from strong sunlight while maintaining the views and still letting in natural light. Central to the project are special shading fins (鰭), which not only optimize views and natural lighting for occupants but reduce solar radiation by 70% compared to traditional all- glass towers.
While the towers are ready to become a recognizable landmark for Lusail, Foster believes that a city's skyline reflects what lies beneath the surface. It was crucial to integrate the towers into a "low- scale master plan." They are strategically positioned on top of a subway line and at the end of a commercial avenue linking the waterfront to the nearby football stadium. According to Foster, the ground features of the plaza will play a significant role in the objective of transforming the area into a lively public space for the future.
8.According to Foster's concept, what should tall buildings be like
A.Creative. B.Identical. C.Fashionable. D.Practical.
9.What can we learn about the Lusail Towers
A.They will function as a global financial center.
B.They are expected to be Qartar's tallest building.
C.They are Foster's most renowned iconic masterpiece.
D.They have four blocks with the same style and height.
10.What was the solution to the challenges caused by Qatar's hot climate
A.Replacing the glass with "marine-grade" aluminum.
B.Coating the tower with an unconventional material.
C.Reducing the views and natural lighting with shading fins.
D.Protecting the glass from natural light and solar radiation.
11.What's the goal of "low- scale master plan"
A.To link the waterfront to the football stadium.
B.To create a remarkable plaza for the citizens.
C.To offer a dynamic public space for the future.
D.To connect a subway and a commercial avenue.

(2024·深圳模擬)The development of bigger brains has long been considered a characteristic of our species' increased intelligence and subsequent dominance (主宰) on this planet. The last two million years of our evolution were marked by a nearly fourfold (四倍的) increase in brain volume. But a growing body of evidence suggests our brains recently changed in an unexpected way: They diminished in size sometime following the end of the last Ice Age.
The precise timing of that post-Ice Age brain shrink has remained a mystery until now. A group of researchers led by DeSilva used a mixture of fossil and modern sample data to confirm that this loss of gray matter happened between 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, according to research published in June in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. DeSilva's group calculated that human brains had remained roughly the same size in average volume, about 1,450 cubic centimeters, for roughly the past 150,000 years. That average rapidly dropped by around 10%, or up to 150 cubic centimeters, over the course of the last few millennia.
DeSilva's group found that not only did the human brain size shrink in general, but also it decreased relative to our body size, suggesting that brain size reduction isn't just a byproduct of our shrinking bodies.
Many anthropologists had explained the changes coincided with the appearance of agricultural practices around 10,000 years ago, and a global shift away from hunting and gathering. DeSilva's group point to booming eras for ancient civilizations in North Africa, the Middle East and South America — complex societies that they think may have played a role in the shrinkage.
The researchers suggested that perhaps our need to maintain a large brain to keep track of information about food, social relationships, and our environment has also relaxed in the past few millennia because we could store information externally in other members of our social circles and groups. That trend is likely strengthened by our use of books, personal devices and the Internet.
"Like, computers used to be the size of a room, and now they fit in your pocket, so it is important not to relate brain size to smarts." DeSilva said.
12.What can be known about the human brain size
A.Our brain volume has been keeping increasing.
B.The size of human brain has dropped to 150 cubic centimeters.
C.Until now, the accurate timing of brain shrink is no longer mysterious.
D.Fossils and sample data are used to figure out the exact brain shrink period.
13.Which is not the reason for brain shrinkage
A.Appearance of agriculture. B.Decreased body size.
C.Developed human society. D.Improved brain mechanism.
14.What is DeSilva and his group's view on the reduction of human brain size
A.A smaller human brain is less smarter.
B.The reduction of human brain size is just a coincidence.
C.It is a result of brain's adjustment to social development.
D.The shrinkage of human brain relaxed us the need to store information.
15.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Reasons for a smarter brain.
B.Brain's mysteries to be revealed.
C.The precise timing of brain shrink.
D.Brain sizes changing circumstantially.

(2024·深圳模擬)Short-form videolso known as Shorts, have gained great popularity, particularly on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. 16. However, there's a growing concern that watching too many Shorts can affect children's brains.
The phenomenon known as "TikTok Brain" arises from the app's short and addictive videos. Similar to candy, these videos generate rapid dopamine (多巴胺) releases, stimulating the brain's pleasure center. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of Shorts on the teenage brains. 17. They stimulated the brain's reward centers more intensely than random videos.
Our brains process visual information faster than text, which explains why videos tend to outperform text-based content online. Due to their underdeveloped reading skills, children are more easily to become addicted to visual stimuli. Remarkably, social media platforms can do a lot harm to the development of reading habits among younger users. 18.
According to Jessica Griffin, a professor of child psychology, Shorts affect the developing brains of children and teenagers. The prefrontal cortex (前額葉皮質) is responsible for attention, self-control, memory, and learning flexibility. 19. This delayed development makes young individuals more easily influenced by Shorts.
In conclusion, the constant exposure to fast-paced and stimulating content in Shorts can impact children's attention. To address this issue, parents can have open conversations with their children about the potential risks. 20. Furthermore, encouraging physical activities and outdoor experiences is also crucial to develop a balance d lifestyle.
A. Some even do not include text at all.
B. TikTok's feed is created addictive by design.
C. But it does not fully mature until around the age of 25.
D. It is helpful to use screen time management tools for Shorts.
E. Short-term memory and the ability to concentrate are affected.

"No, little girl. You can't get in without the money." Jeffrey, the bus driver, told a little girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She must have been around seven years old, and he wasn't in the mood to deal with unaccompanied children that day.
"Please, sir. I want to visit my grandmother," the little girl begged. "Then go ask your parents for the money and come back next time," Jeffrey replied and gestured with his hand for the girl to get out. She finally left the bus with her shoulders lowered. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off.
He finished his route and went home for the lunch, greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting down on the couch to rest. When he browsed his Facebook posts, an image caught his attention. A picture was shared of the little girl he had just turned away a few hours earlier. The word "Missing" was written on top of the image. He learned that the girl had disappeared a day ago, and her parents were desperately trying to find her.
"Dear! What have I done " he asked himself, standing up and going to the front door. When Greta asked where he was going, Jeffrey said, "Greta! Quick! Call 911 and this number," showing her the picture of the girl. "I saw this girl at a bus stop earlier, and I turned her away because she didn't have enough money. I'm going to find her, but please make those calls." Having told her where the bus stop was, he went out.
Jeffrey rushed to his car, speeding to the bus stop. Hopefully, the girl was smart enough to stay in one place. He couldn't believe how careless he had been earlier. She was a little girl all alone. As he drove to the bus stop, Jeffrey vowed to be more careful in the future, especially when it came to children.

"Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face". Felipe said with a strong will.(盡管目標崇高,Felipe承認Porsorriso正在‘掙扎著生存',因為提供牙科治療的巨大成本和他們必須舉行的持續籌款活動以保持非政府組織的正常運作。‘雖然這很有挑戰性,但它確實給當地人帶來了健康的牙齒,并重新樹立了信心。無論我們面臨什么困難,我們都將繼續這一變革行動。'斐利貝帶著強烈的意志說)"可知,他承認Porsorriso的生存很困難,但他們將繼續進行這項改變性的行動,無論他們將面臨什么困難,這表明他具有奉獻精神。故選D。
7.細節理解題。根據第四段"Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity' program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.(贊助通常由兩家私人公司提供。個人也可以通過‘微笑團結'計劃捐款,他們可以選擇每月的捐款數額。Porsorriso還定期舉行籌款活動,為全國各地提供免費牙科服務)"可知,Porsorriso是由企業和個人提供經濟支持。故選C。

12.細節理解題。根據第二段"A group of researchers led by DeSilva used a mixture of fossil and modern sample data to confirm that this loss of gray matter happened between 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, according to research published in June in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.(根據6月份發表在《生態與進化前沿》雜志上的一項研究,由德西爾瓦領導的一組研究人員使用化石和現代樣本數據的混合來證實,這種灰質的喪失發生在3000到5000年前)"可知,化石和樣本數據被用來計算確切的腦萎縮時期。故選D。
Many anthropologists had explained the changes coincided with the appearance of agricultural practices around 10,000 years ago, and a global shift away from hunting and gathering.(許多人類學家解釋說,這些變化與大約1萬年前農業活動的出現以及全球從狩獵和采集的轉變相吻合)"以及倒數第二段"The researchers suggested that perhaps our need to maintain a large brain to keep track of information about food, social relationships, and our environment has also relaxed in the past few millennia because we could store information externally in other members of our social circles and groups. That trend is likely strengthened by our use of books, personal devices and the Internet.(研究人員認為,也許在過去的幾千年里,我們需要保持一個大的大腦來記錄有關食物、社會關系和我們的環境的信息,因為我們可以將信息存儲在我們社交圈和群體的其他成員身上。我們對書籍、個人設備和互聯網的使用可能會加強這一趨勢)"可知,體型減小不是大腦萎縮的原因。故選B。
14.細節理解題。根據倒數第三段"DeSilva's group point to booming eras for ancient civilizations in North Africa, the Middle East and South America — complex societies that they think may have played a role in the shrinkage.(DeSilva的研究小組指出,北非、中東和南美古代文明的繁榮時期,他們認為這些復雜的社會可能在縮小中發揮了作用)"可知,DeSilva和他的團隊認為人類大腦體積縮小是大腦適應社會發展的結果。故選C。
The last two million years of our evolution were marked by a nearly fourfold (四倍的) increase in brain volume. But a growing body of evidence suggests our brains recently changed in an unexpected way: They diminished in size sometime following the end of the last Ice Age.(在過去200萬年的進化中,我們的腦容量增加了近四倍。

如表示轉折關系的but,though, however 等。6.
However, there's a growing concern that watching too many Shorts can affect children's brains.(然而,越來越多的人擔心看太多短片會影響孩子的大腦)"中"However"可知,上下文有轉折關系,下文講短視頻的問題:會影響孩子的大腦",G項"They're brief attention-grabbing videos that can be entertaining and addictive.(它們是簡短且引人注意的視頻,既有趣又容易讓人上癮。)"講短視頻的魅力,與下文構成轉折關系。故選G。
17.上文"A study was conducted to investigate the impact of Shorts on the teenage brains.(一項研究調查了短視頻對青少年大腦的影響)"提到一個關于短視頻對青少年大腦的影響的研究,F項"It revealed that these videos are personalized, selected and fed to users.( 研究揭示,這些視頻是經過個性化篩選后推送給用戶的。)"
18.上文"Remarkably, social media platforms can do a lot harm to the development of reading habits among younger users.(值得注意的是,社交媒體平臺可能會對年輕用戶閱讀習慣的養成造成很大傷害)"指出社交媒體平臺對閱讀習慣的養成的影響,E項"Short-term memory and the ability to concentrate are affected.(短期記憶和集中注意力的能力會受到影響。)"
19.下文"This delayed development makes young individuals more easily influenced by Shorts.(這種延遲發育使年輕人更容易受到short的影響)"中提到"This delayed development",根據指代關系,上文會明確其指代的具體內容,C項"But it does not fully mature until around the age of 25.(但它要到 25 歲左右才會完全成熟。)"和上文"The prefrontal cortex (前額葉皮質) is responsible for attention, self-control, memory, and learning flexibility.(前額葉皮層負責注意力、自我控制、記憶和學習靈活性)"告知,下文的"延遲發育"指的是"前額葉皮層的延遲發育"。故選C。
20.上文"To address this issue, parents can have open conversations with their children about the potential risks.(為了解決這個問題,父母可以和他們的孩子就潛在的風險進行開誠布公的交流)"提出解決問題的一個辦法:父母和孩子進行交流。D項"It is helpful to use screen time management tools for Shorts.(使用屏幕時間管理工具來管理短視頻是有幫助的。)" Furthermore, encouraging physical activities and outdoor experiences is also crucial to develop a balance d lifestyle.(此外,鼓勵體育活動和戶外活動對于發展平衡的生活方式也至關重要)"提出第三個建議:鼓勵體育活動和戶外活動。

Upon walking through the lush forests, we visited the sites of historical battles and the humble living quarters of our revolutionary heroes. Each place we explored was a testament to their unwavering courage and dedication.
The highlight was meeting the descendants of these heroes. Their stories breathed life into the history books, making the sacrifices of the past vivid and real. It was humbling to stand in the places where history unfolded and to understand the true meaning of resilience and unity.
This trip was a reminder that our peace today is built upon the sacrifices of the past. I now appreciate the value of perseverance and the importance of our national heritage.

(2024·深圳模擬)For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished (貧困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn't possible. A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master's degree in Pediatric Dentistry (兒童口腔學) when a journey to his father's home — Balsabo in Brazil — converted his initial plan. "All locals didn't have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open." Felipe Rossi recalled. "A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems."
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning. fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity' program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is "struggling to survive" because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. "Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face". Felipe said with a strong will.

Dear Simon,
I can't wait to share my recent adventure with you. Last month, our class embarked on a five-day learning trip to Jinggang Mountain. It was not more than just a journey but a profound history lesson and a spiritual awakening.
Do you have similar experience Looking forward to your story.
Best regards,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 續寫詞數應為150左右;

A few minutes later, the police and another car approached.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, he saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench at the spot. Jeffery felt relieved and delighted to see the girl staying safe and sound. Trying to calm himself, Jeffery decided to talk to her gently. He inquired about her name and why she had left home. "I was going to Grandma's house. My mom wouldn't let me go." Sarah replied, swinging one of her feet and looking at the concrete floor. "Your parents are searching for you, and they'll be here soon," he assured her, and the little girl gave him a small smile.
A few minutes later, the police and another car approached them. A woman got out of the vehicle and rushed toward Sarah. The little girl got up and ran to her, yelling, "Mommy!" The police officers approached Jeffrey and he told them the entire story and how he regretted not letting her on the bus, so he came to find her. Sarah's parents thanked him for what he had done. From then on, Jeffrey helped anyone short on cash who got on his bus, and he always watched out for the kids that were alone because they needed someone like him to do the right job.
Jeffery felt relieved and delighted to see the girl staying safe and sound. (運用了動詞不定式做原因狀語);Trying to calm himself, Jeffery decided to talk to her gently. (運用了現在分詞短語作狀語); He inquired about her name and why she had left home. (運用了why引導的賓語從句); The police officers approached Jeffrey and he told them the entire story and how he regretted not letting her on the bus, so he came to find her. (運用了how引導的賓語從句); Sarah's parents thanked him for what he had done. (運用了what引導的賓語從句);From then on, Jeffrey helped anyone short on cash who got on his bus, and he always watched out for the kids that were alone because they needed someone like him to do the right job.(運用了who&that引導的定語從句以及because引導的原因狀語從句)。
