About 2.4 billion (十億) years ago, there was little oxygen (氧氣) in the air, so no animal or plant life could live. Instead, lots of microbes (微生物) took in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), and one of them called cyanobacteria (藍藻) gave off oxygen.
At first it wasn’t much, but in only about 400 million years, about 1/10 of the air became oxygen. So plants and animals could evolve (進化) and more plants joined the oxygen-making party.
But why did the bacteria (細菌) start to make oxygen Scientists guessed (猜測) it was because of the sunlight. They noticed (發現) that the bacteria started to make oxygen at the same time as the slowing down of the Earth’s rotation (地球自轉). Slower (更慢的) rotation means (意味著) longer (更長的) days. That means the bacteria could get more sunlight for one time. Then the scientists made a test (測試) with a particular bacterium (細菌). But the best way is also the hardest. Hyperion’s lowest branches (樹枝) are 25 storeys (樓層) up. To get to them, Steve uses a crossbow (弩) to launch (發射) fishing line up and over the tree’s branches.
Then he uses the line to hoist (拉高) his climbing rope (繩子) into the tree. With the rope in place, Steve and his wife walk their way up into the canopy (林冠). After they got about 300 feet in the tree, they had a rest and said, “We still probably are about half an hour to an hour from the top.”

Why do we have different seasons
As our planet moves around the Sun, the light from the Sun falls on the Earth from different directions. This 51 (help) create the seasons. At different times of year, there 52 (be) more sunlight in some places, and less sunlight in others. More sunlight means longer days 53 warmer weather, and this is why we have spring and summer. It gets colder in autumn and winter because the days are shorter and we get less light 54 the Sun.
The seasons fall at different times of year around the world. China is north of the equator (赤道). Here, we experience summer from June to August. South of the equator, June, July and August are winter 55 (month). In Australia, it is summer from December to February, and 56 (Australia) have their spring when we have our autumn.
The 57 (world) hottest and the coldest parts don’t have four seasons. It is always hot in places close to the equator. These places are called the tropics. Instead of 58 (we) four seasons, many parts of the tropics have a 59 (rain) season and a dry season. Around 60 North and South Poles, there are only two seasons too: a very, very cold winter and a somewhat less cold summer.

Li Shaoyue, 30, is an artist of interior painting. Li learned the art for about 20 years.
