Films such as Hotel Rwanda, American Beauty, and The Big Chill made their premieres (首映) at this famous star-filled event held each September. The 11-day-long festival is also known as the kick-off of awards season, with many films that make their first public performance at TIFF going on to get nominated (提名) for Oscars and Golden Globe awards.
Edmonton Folk Festival
From its humble beginning in 1980, Edmonton Folk Festival has grown to be one of the world’s famous folk festivals. Held each August, the lineup of the 10-day-long festival is always outstanding and ticket prices stay reasonable. Edmonton is also a gateway to Jasper National Park and the Canadian Rockies, about two hours away in case you have extra time to explore after the festival.

For the creatively minded, snow represents a large blank canvas (空白畫布) for art. But often, it’s limited to snowmen or other snow statues. Simon Beck had a different idea, and over the course of a decade he has carved a path for himself in the snow art world. He creates large land art by walking across soccer-field-sized areas covered in untouched bined with light and shadow, his artistic designs can only be fully appreciated when viewed from above.
Beck, 59, a former map maker turned into a snow artist, thanks to his decision late in life to pursue his hobby.
“It started just as a joke one day really,” Beck explained. “After skiing one day, I decided to make a drawing on snow to have pleasure…”
“I really had no idea how good it would look when I made that first drawing, but it really went beyond my expectation.” he said of his first ever creation that he looked down on from a ski lift.
To create this work, Beck stepped his way through the snow using only snowshoes and a ski pole for measurement with nothing else but the image of a design idea in his head. It was not challenging at all due to his previous work experience. But as his designs developed and became more complex, Beck said he began to start drawing them on paper first.
Beck’s paintings have become a huge hit since his work was first shared.
“Most of the time I had been doing failed careers, and people around me are asking what’s the quickest way of getting rid of this person,” Beck said. “And for the first time, I felt people actually wanted me. I felt like a more valued member of society.”

The first running boom came in the 1970s and 80s and there was no real diversity: it was all thin, skinny, white guys in very tight shorts. The second boom came after Paula Radcliffe broke the world marathon record in 2003, leading to a big jump in women taking up running, before parkrun grew the numbers again. You look now. This explosion — and it really is an explosion — has been brilliant to see.
More than 1.1 million have signed up for the 2026 London Marathon — not only a world record but nearly double the figure from two years ago. Strikingly, for the first time, the male/female division is almost 50/50．The race is also getting younger: more than a third of UK entries are aged from 18 to 29 years old.
Running has always been cheap and anyone can do it. Now it is also fashionable. But dig a little deeper, and there are some interesting things going on. Last month, for instance, Sport England found that while there were 349,000 more runners in England in 2024 compared to 2023, that rise was almost entirely fueled by women.
“Part of the rise is because brands have realized that women are willing to spend a lot of money on products that work better and look nicer,” says Lee Glandorf, a marketer who works with sports brands. This huge ecosystem of female creators definitely brings in younger women. That is particularly true of Gen Z, who drink much less than previous generations and is more aware of mental health. A research is now showing that running is better than taking a pill to help with depression. Another factor behind the boom is the explosion of running clubs, which bring people together. In the buildup to the London Marathon, the sports brand Tracksmith had up to 400 runners gather outside its shop for its Sunday morning long runs with pacers running between 6.45-minute and 12-minute miles.

A new study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health shows that climate change may significantly impact arsenic (砷) levels in rice, a main food for millions across Asia. The research indicates that increased temperatures above 2℃, combined with rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, result in higher concentrations (濃度) of arsenic in rice, potentially increasing lifetime health risks for populations in Asia by 2050.
“Our results suggest that this increase in arsenic levels could significantly raise the incidence of heart disease, and other serious health effects,” said Lewis Ziska, PhD, Columbia Mailman School associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences. “As rice is a principle food in many parts of the world, these changes could lead to a substantial rise in the global problem of cancer, and other arsenic-related health issues.”
From a health aspect, the harmful effects of long-lasting arsenic exposure are well established and include cancers of the lung and skin, as well as heart disease. Emerging evidence also suggests that arsenic exposure may be even linked to poor pregnancy (妊娠) outcomes. In fact, “ingesting rice in regions like southern China and Southeast and South Asia is already a significant source of cancer risk,” said Ziska.
By measuring the effects of rising temperatures and CO2 on 28 rice kinds over ten years in the field using FACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment) method, and combining advanced modeling techniques, the team estimated health risks for seven Asian countries.
“Based on our findings, we believe there are several actions that could help reduce arsenic exposure in the future,” Ziska noted. These include efforts in plant producing to minimize arsenic uptake, improved soil management in rice fields, and better processing practices. Such measures, along with public health initiatives focused on consumer education and exposure monitoring, could play a critical role in reducing the health impacts of climate change on people’s eating rice.
