On the last days of July, I moved to a flat in Brixton and joined those with a garden for the first time.
Before moving, I lived in a flat surrounded by a small plot of woodland nearby. There were a good six weeks during which the dawn chorus was so loud that waking up at 5 am was a daily routine. Watching the birds became a soap opera I was deeply invested in. In Brixton, though, all I could hear was traffic.
Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space.
It was for this reason that I turned to gardening. I was not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony (陽臺), four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. The only garden I had was in my head, and the space I had when I started my career was used for parties, barbecues and playing with the neighbor’s cat.
Filled with blind enthusiasm and curiosity, I picked up plants from supermarkets and flower markets and planted them on my balcony, often killing them out of love and then starting all over again. I often spent whole weekends in that small space. The balcony had a good view: one of London’s shining skylines beneath high skies that changed colour and cloud by the minute. But it was so small that you had to look closely and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver, it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.
4. Why does the author mention the morning chorus
A. To show that the woods were close to his flat.
B. To highlight the activity of birds in the morning.
C. To illustrate the joy and routine nature brings.
D. To emphasize the loudness of the bird songs.
5. What drove the author to take up gardening
A. The need for a new hobby.
B. The lack of green spaces in the new location.
C. Formal training at the age of 20.
D. Influences of other gardeners.
6. What does the author’s gardening experience show
A. Gardening requires formal education.
B. The balcony is ideal for growing plants.
C. The author has a natural talent for gardening.
D. Small spaces can develop deep connections with nature.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards gardening
A. Enthusiastic. B. Discouraged. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.

The number of children being educated at home has been growing for the past few decades. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reported that by the last count, in 2019, nearly 3% of U.S. children — 1.5 million — were being homeschooled.
This number is surely an undercount because the homeschooling population is very hard to survey. Eleven states do not require parents to inform anyone that they are homeschooling a child, and in most of the country, once a child has exited the traditional schoolroom environment, no one checks to ensure they are receiving an education at all.
When a traditional classroom setting cannot meet the educational, social or emotional needs of a child, homeschooling can allow parents to take over. However, many parents are attracted to homeschooling because they want to have more say in what their children learn and what they do not.
Some children may not be receiving any instruction at all. Most states don’t require homeschooled kids to be assessed on specific topics the way their classroom-based peers are. This practice enables educational neglect (忽視) that can have long-lasting consequences for a child’s development.
Homeschooling advocacy organizations promote studies that claim to show equal or higher levels of academic achievement among homeschooled students, but these studies are often conducted by homeschooling advocates. It’s difficult for social scientists to recruit (招募) representative samples for more strict research because of loose reporting requirements and the underground nature of homeschooling.
Still, studies of different homeschooled populations have shown that children’s success depends heavily on their parents’ educational backgrounds. Despite this, in 40 states, parents do not need to have even a high school-level education to educate their children at home.
Children deserve a safe and sound education, even though they are educated at home. The government must develop basic standards for safety and quality of education in homeschooling. For example, homeschooling parents could be required to pass an initial background check. Homeschooling instructors could be required to submit documents every year to their local school district or to a state agency to show that their children are learning.
8. Why is the number of homeschooled children likely undercounted
A. Homeschooling isn’t popular in cities.
B. Homeschooling is illegal in some states.
C. Many parents don’t report homeschooling.
D. The government’s survey methods are outdated.
9. What is one reason parents might choose homeschooling for their children
A. To reduce the cost of education.
B. To avoid government regulations.
C. To ensure their children receive standardized testing.
D. To have more control over their children’s education.
10. Which of the following is a major concern about homeschooling
A. Homeschooled children lack family care.
B. Parents may fail to provide any formal education.
C. Governments are over-regulating it.
D. It requires expensive teaching materials.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. The Future of Education
B. The Benefits of Homeschooling
C. The Popularity of Homeschooling in the U.S.
D. The Challenges and Regulation of Homeschooling

Astronauts play a crucial role in NASA’s scientific research.
“Our job is to work together with people from all over the world to build vehicles and spacecraft to safely live in the space environment to explore the universe,” says retired NASA astronaut Leland Melvin. “We do cutting-edge biological and material research that can save lives on Earth as well as observe the Earth and monitor changes as we fly around the planet every 90 minutes.”
Former astronauts say that they were constantly collaborating (合作) with their colleagues during their time as astronauts. They note that team spirit is crucial for anyone who wants to get this type of position. Humility (謙遜) to recognize what one does not know is also vital for this job as it involves the ability to quickly learn new skills.
“Being an astronaut is exciting for anyone who likes to design and build technology because the job involves testing the limits of what technology can do.” says Charles Camarda who previously served as a senior adviser for innovation at NASA. He notes that the extreme environment in space forces astronauts to be creative. The absence of gravity in outer space poses significant challenges when performing everyday tasks.
An astronaut’s work is not restricted to when he or she is in space, according to NASA. “When astronauts are not flying on a mission or training for a mission, they support other missions,” the NASA website states. “There are many jobs on the ground required to support the design, preparation, training and flying of a space mission.”
Stephanie Schierholz, a public affairs officer for the human exploration and operations branch of NASA, says that preparing and recovering from missions is a time-consuming process.
“On Earth, astronauts participate in training to ensure proficiency for their missions,” she explains. “Typically, astronauts spend years training for a mission, then spend about six months aboard the International Space Station during a mission, and spend time reconditioning afterward, which is necessary due to the effects of zero gravity on their bodies.” Schierholz notes that astronauts typically conduct science experiments during their missions “The space station is an orbiting laboratory, and the astronauts aboard typically support about 250 different research investigations during their six-month mission,” she says.
12. What can be learned about astronauts in NASA’s scientific research
A. They primarily focus on building spacecraft.
B. Their work is limited to conducting experiments in space.
C. They contribute to both space exploration and Earth-related research.
D. They are mainly responsible for monitoring changes in the world.
13. Why is humility considered a vital quality for astronauts
A. It allows astronauts to focus only on Earth observation.
B. It ensures astronauts can perform physically demanding tasks.
C. It helps astronauts avoid conflicts with international colleagues.
D. It enables astronauts to recognize their limitations and learn quickly.
14. What is a key challenge that astronauts face when carrying out space missions
A. The limited time for testing. B. The extreme environment of space.
C. The need for constant collaboration. D. The difficulty of training.
15. What does the underlined word “reconditioning” in the last paragraph most likely refer to
A. Recovering physical health. B. Continuing education.
C. Planning future missions. D. Repairing equipment.

Lila lived in a seaside village where green trees met the blue sea. She loved beach games but feared deep water since age six, when a huge wave covered her head. She never forgot how water filled her nose. Now at twelve, she only played where water touched her knees, watching others swim far out.
Her little brother Tom, only seven, had been sick for twenty days. His cough shook his small body, and he slept all day. The village nurse looked worried. “We need a miracle,” she sighed.
One sunny day, old sailor Ben sat on the beach. Children crowded around as he described a shining white shell in the hidden Sea Cave. “It has special power,” he said, showing his brown hands like a map. Lila knew instantly — this could help Tom!
At sunrise, Ben’s small boat took them over quiet waters. Jack, a boy with a friendly face who won swimming prizes, came to help. They jumped into clear water. Small yellow fish swam quickly around Lila’s legs. But as they went deeper, the water grew dark and cold. Lila’s heart beat fast. Dark rocks looked scary. She stopped moving, holding Jack’s arm tightly.
“Look at me!” Jack made funny faces. “See that starfish Swim to it with me!”
Ben stayed close, his voice peaceful. “Fear visits everyone,” he said. “But courage never leaves.” Lila agreed, moving her legs bravely.
Suddenly, strong waves pushed them hard. Salt water hurt Lila’s eyes. Through her teary eyes, she saw Tom’s favorite toy boat in her mind — she must save him! Closing her mouth, she pushed through the rough water, Jack leading the way.

A special class meeting was held in our class on June 18th, 2025, to celebrate the significant milestone of the students’ Coming of-Age Ceremony.

A highlight was writing commitments on a “Promise Wall”. The atmosphere was both reflective and uplifting. Participants reported a heightened sense of maturity and duty. They felt the meeting strengthened their unity and resolve to face upcoming challenges, especially the national college entrance exam.
第二節(滿分25分)
【47題答案】
【答案】Finally, they reached the dark cave. Ben’s lamp showed the shell glowing softly on a wet rock. Lila carefully held it, feeling warmth spread through her fingers. Jack smiled, “You beat the sea!” Swimming back, sunlight danced on waves. The water now felt friendly. At home, Lila put the shell in warm milk. Tom drank it and slept deeply. Next morning, he sat up hungry. They smiled together.
After that day, Lila was never afraid of deep water again. She swam daily to the coral garden. Soon village children asked for lessons. A little girl shook at the shore, like the baby Lila. “Hold my hand,” Lila said gently. “Feel the water lift you ” The girl laughed as waves rocked them. Lila taught that courage grows with practice. She kept the white shell on her window. “See this ” she'd tell nervous swimmers. "Fear is a wave — face it, and it carries you forward.”聽力部分錄音稿
