A
Build chips for AI
A new type of chip has ‘superpower’ in helping AI learn
人工智能的“專屬”芯片有何特殊?
When talking about new technology, you will probably think of artificial intelligence (AI). But have you heard of AI chips (芯片) Companies around the world that develop AI need this kind of chip, making it very important in the technology field.
To learn about AI chips, we first need to talk about graphics cards (顯卡). They are a kind of computer chip that makes images (圖像) look better and clearer. The main part of a graphics card is the GPU, or graphics processing unit (圖形處理器). It was developed by NVIDIA in the late 1990s. Although it was first made for video games, it has amazing computing power (計算能力).
For traditional computers, their CPU (central processing unit) processes one piece of data (數據) at a time. But a GPU can process many pieces of data at once. This is why gamers buy GPUs to have a better video game experience.
However, as technology developed, GPU’s real superpower turned out to be its use in training AI models. So, AI chips were built based on (基于……) GPUs. AI companies such as OpenAI and Google use AI chips to speed up and improve the way their AI “learns” things. These chips are especially useful for making large language models perform better, such as the well-known ChatGPT. With their excellent ability to deal with a lot of data at once, there’s no telling how far they’ll go.
For us, if we have AI chips in our smartphones (手機), data processing can happen on the phone rather than in the cloud. This makes phones work faster, keep information safer, and use less energy.Choose the answer:
26.How is GPU different from CPU
A.It can process data one piece at a time. B.It can show images to viewers.
C.It can do computing better. D.It can work for video games.
27.What can a chip based on GPU help AI do

Check out what the future phones may be like according to latest designs
未來的手機長什么樣?
US company Motorola created the first cell phone in 1973. The brick-sized phone could only make calls for 30 minutes. Today, we have 5G smartphones that look very different and can do a lot more. What will the future phones be like
Most foldable (可折疊的) phones today can only fold the screen up and down or left and right. But in the future, phones will be much more flexible (靈活的). In October 2023, Motorola put out a new phone. People can wear it like a bracelet (手環) and bend (彎曲) it into different shapes. Apple is also working on a way to make foldable screens with fewer creases (折痕).
Not only will the phones become flexible, but they will also be able to fix themselves. Professor Zhenan Bao from Stanford University made an electronic skin (皮膚) that can fix itself with heat and magnets (磁). This skin acts like human skin, stretching (拉伸) without tearing (撕破). If it is used to make phones, the technology could lead to devices that could fix scratches (劃痕) by themselves.
People will also power (給……充電) phones in ways that are different from now. For example, using solar energy (太陽能). In 2016, Kyocera Corporation from Japan and French company SunPartner Technologies made a phone with solar panels (電池板) in the screen. It takes three minutes of sunlight to charge for one minute of talk time. But it still needs traditional batteries (電池). In the future, faster and independent solar charging could make solar-powered phones more popular.

Looking for a new hobby Maybe it’s time to try computer programming.
That’s what 84-year-old Masako Wakamiya of Japan decided to do 4 years ago. What’s more, the Granny made a free app game, Hinadan, which gets nearly 5 stars on the Apple App Store and 53,000 downloads worldwide.
The app, based on the traditional Japanese doll festival of Hina Matsuri, invites players to put 12 dolls in the right order. So far, the game has become very popular with elderly(年長) women who enjoy playing it with their grandchildren.
“Japan is a ‘super-aged’ nation where one in four people are over 65 years old. Still, there aren’t many app games for elderly people. As we age, our eyesight is falling, and we can’t move our fingers(手指) the way we’d like to. So people of my age find the app games for young people boring,” said Wakamiya. That’s why she decided to develop one for elderly people all by herself. She learned the ins and outs of the computer programming through a 6-month computer class. Then her first brainchild, Hinadan, came into being.
“Programming is easy to learn, but it is also a very powerful language. The Internet took me to a whole new world that I never knew before I used a computer. It seems that my life began again and I’m pretty excited about what’s still to come,” she said. “ I also hope other elderly people will learn about the good points that digital(數字的) life could offer and make the most of it.”

As Chinese users get used to their nightly surfing on Xiaohongshu, they are seeing a flood of English-language content. Many users from the US, calling themselves “TikTok refugees (抖音難民)”, have joined this Chinese app.
“Hello everyone, I’m Ryan, a TikTok refugee. The American government is banning (禁止) TikTok, so we’re looking for another choice… We’re sorry to break in here.” one of the vloggers said in a video.
There is a growing belief in the US that American government will keep on banning TikTok because of the so-called China threat (威脅) to information security (安全). This leaves its 170 million users frustrated (懊惱的).
With US users calling themselves TikTok refugees, they are moving to the Chinese app. By Tuesday, there were over 114,000 posts from the foreigners, and more than 2 million discussions and 73 million views by 6 pm on Friday. Xiaohongshu became the most downloaded app on the US app store on Tuesday.
Chinese users have shown welcome and helped them learn Chinese. However, not all cultural exchanges have gone well. A user from Beijing received criticism (批評) from US users for “supporting stereotypes (刻板印象)” after posting a video. Many Chinese users are worried that US ideas and harmful cultures like gambling (賭博), and drug use could become popular on the Chinese Internet.
According to an expert from Fudan University, the influx (流入) of “TikTok refugees” may not last (持續) long. Because American ideas differ greatly from those in China, US culture may have little lasting effect on Xiaohongshu.
37.“TikTok refugees” are foreign users who ______.
A.don’t have enough food to eat
B.want to ban TikTok in the US
C.are looking for another app to replace TikTok
