“The Jacoby Competition never fails to be one of the UW Symphony Orchestra’s most exciting events,” says UW Department of Music Professor Michael Griffith. “What you will hear is actually the finals of a two-stage competition.”

Pablo Guerrero has spent his life exploring the cacti (仙人掌) in the Atacama Desert. He first saw them during a family trip along Chile’s coast and soon fell in love with the strange shapes and bright
flowers of the cacti. Later, as a researcher, he studied the impacts of climate change and human activities,
like illegal poaching (偷盜), on these special plants.
Guerrero began visiting the Atacama as a researcher in the early 2000s and observed the plants that he had admired as a child. Their ability to live in such tough conditions impressed him. However, he grew concerned as human activities might make it even harder for the species to continue to survive.
The cacti in the Atacama are particularly subject to changes in their habitat. Many species live in very small areas, sometimes just a few square kilometers. And in the driest reaches of the desert, the cacti depend on fog alone for water. But the desert is getting hotter and drier,and in some places, the fog is disappearing.
At the same time, mining and energy projects have led to more roads, making the fragile (脆弱的) environment more accessible. This change has brought more litter and broken-down cactus remains along the roadsides. These remains do not disappear quickly, making the desert look even more lifeless.
Recently, Guerrero learned that many cacti are being stolen at the Chilean border. As people around the world grow interested in having cacti as houseplants, theft has increased which has put the species in danger, along with climate change.

Characteristics, such as ability to follow gestures (手勢) and reaction to unsolvable tasks in 3- to 7-month-old dogs, were related to desirable behaviors in those puppies (幼犬) in adulthood, researchers report in the May Applied Animal Behaviour Science. These findings could help pet owners determine the best way to train their dogs and what kinds of activities the animals may enjoy as they age.
Katriina Tiira and her team at the University of Helsink i invited pet owners, show-dog handlers and working-dog trainers to bring their dogs for cognition (認知) tests designed to show how dogs think and learn.
227 dogs between the ages of 3 months and 7 months were directed to do things like follow gestures pointing at a bowl with treats, attempt unsolvable tasks or access treats placed in a clear box with an opening in the back. 99 of those dogs repeated the tests as adults,between ages 1 and 8. Many characteristics remained almost the same from puppyhood to adulthood, the team found, especially in dogs that were tested at 6 months or 7months old.
Researchers then surveyed some owners about their now-adult animals’ behavior and trainability, and compared that data with dog test results for 227 dogs. The surveys showed that dogs who quickly learned to follow gestures became more trainable as adults. Puppies that showed fear when meeting a stranger often remained shy around new people.
These findings offer a clear way to match training and activities to each dog’s natural strengths, helping every dog grow into a happy, well-adjusted adult. For example, Tiira suggests that dogs that tend to stay away from strangers might have lower self-confidence. “What I would do with these kinds of dogs is that I would give them a lot of experiences and feelings of success in all training,” she says, adding that encouraging them—as long as they are well-behaved—and creating positive experiences in new situations might help as well.

Mars once had a thick, warm air rich in carbon dioxide (CO ), but that carbon has been trapped in its rocks for thousands of years. That’s the story shown by a hidden secret of carbon-bearing minerals unearthed by NASA’s Curiosity rover (探 測 器 ) along its route up a Martian mountain. This finding gives us the first clear proof of a carbon cycle on Mars, and shows why the planet’s life-friendly climate disappeared.
Long ago, Mars had abundant water and a warm climate, supported by a thick CO atmosphere. But today, the planet is a cold, dry desert with almost no atmosphere. Scientists long wondered where all that CO went. Geochemist Benjamin Tutolo and his team thought it must be locked in carbonate (碳酸 鹽) minerals, but previous searches hadn't found enough to explain the loss.
In 2022 and 2023, Curiosity drove across a region where the rocks change from soft, wet clay— marking the great drying of Mars. The rover drilled four samples (樣品) from different rocks and used its onboard lab to study them. The research team identified siderite, a carbonate mineral that forms when water, rock and heat interact and then dry out. Each sample held between 5 and 10 percent siderite by weight—much more than expected. “We found it here, for the first time,” Tutolo said. “That’s the main point that makes this cool here. This discovery brings us much closer to solving the carbon mystery.”
This work provides a great explanation for how Mars could once support rivers and lakes, yet later lost its warm air. Looking ahead, scientists hope to match orbital data with ground findings and, finally, return samples to Earth for further research.
