Live streaming (直播) has taken off as one of the most popular online social activities since late 2015 or early 2016. In recent years, the number of people using live streaming services in China is growing rapidly, with tens of thousands of everyday users.
As of 2023, there were over 660 million active viewers of live streams, mostly between 27 and 39 years old! The industry is worth 4.9 trillion yuan in comparison to only 0.12 trillion on 2018, showing 53% year-on-year growth.
Unlike the US, video gaming streams only make up 20% of China’s live streaming e-commerce (電子商務) market. The remaining 80% comes from “in real life” streamers. Young people prefer to watch famous people sell daily necessities rather than watch people play games. According to surveys, 70% of these streamers are female and about two-thirds are under 26 years old. These young hosts stream everything from fashion to just chatting about life.
Live streaming has become one of the most cost-effective tools for e-commerce in China. Live streaming services are the “go-to” option for Chinese netizens (網民) when looking for new products and deciding on what to buy on the home shopping network. It is an important part of the discovery journey, unlike for customers in the US and Europe.
Although there are various platforms (平臺) and service providers in the live streaming industry Alibaba’s marketplaces, like Taobao Live, have the largest market share. Taobao Live Marketplace takes over 68% of the entire market. On Taobao, customers are able to shop for over 600,000 products through live stream every day.

On January 1st 2018, “gaming disorder” — in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm — gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO). Last year, China, the world’s biggest gaming market, announced new rules limiting children to just a single hour of play a day. Clinics are appearing around the world, promising to cure patients of their habit.
Are games really addictive Psychologists have different opinions. The case for the defence is that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock and roll, jazz, comic books, and even novels. As the newest form of mass media, gaming is merely enduring (忍受) its own time before it finally stops being debatable.
However, some argue that unlike rock bands or novelists, games developers have both the motive and the means to engineer their products to make them addictive. For one thing, the business-model has changed. In the old days games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from purchases of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to developers’ income. For another, games makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smartphones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. That allows products to be constantly adjusted to increase spending on games.
The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses (診斷) become more common. Clinics are already reporting booming business, as lockdowns have given games more time to spend with their hobby. And being put together in the public mind, fairly or not, with gambling (賭博) will not do the industry any favours.
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To inform the readers of the harmful effects of games.
B. To arouse the readers’ interest about the topic.
C. To show growing public concern about the problem of games.
D. To discuss whether it is necessary to panic about games.
9. Why is television, together with other media forms, mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To show that they are as highly addictive as games.
B. To prove that the panic over games will fade away.
C. To argue that these media forms are not harmful at all.
D. To compare the differences among these media forms.
10. How do games developers make games addictive
A. They adjust products based on received data.
B. They don’t charge players for in-game goods.
C. They keep players’ video game machines updated.
D. They reward top players with more playtime.
11. What does the author aim to do in the last paragraph
A Make a prediction. B. Offer a suggestion.
C. Put forward a solution. D. Give a warning.

With its neatly arranged tables and shelves loaded with books written by women, Greta Livraria’s small space masks its big ambitions. Since opening this year, the bookstore in Lisbon has contributed its space entirely to promote a group that has, for the most part, been overlooked and undervalued by society: female authors.
It is a “form of historical reparation (彌補)”, said Lorena Travassos, the founder of the store that aims to“address the longstanding gap in sales and publications faced by women”. It is the latest in a wave of bookshops that have sprung up across Europe to give voice to female authors, past and present. In Madrid, a 2017 crowdfunding campaign gave rise to Mujeres & Compa ía, while in Berlin the bookshop She Said is devoted to books by female and queer authors (酷兒作家).
Six years ago in Scotland, Rachel Wood launched a book subscription service, Rare Birds, in an effort to support women’s writing. Despite the fact that some of the world’s most talented writers are women, Wood had long felt that respect for women’s writing was insufficient. “I feel so passionately that women are writing such interesting and exciting things,” said Wood. “Rare Birds is an opportunity to share that with other people.”
As interest in the subscription service grew—it now has members from more than 20 countries—a physical shop in Edinburgh soon followed. The shop’s 2021 opening illustrated the demand for a different kind of bookstore, and thousands of people visited on its first weekend. “Over and over, people tell us how exciting it feels to come into the bookstore and see every inch of shelf space devoted to women’s writing,” said Wood. “Visually, it’s very impactful. The space is designed to treat literal types typically viewed as “women’s interest” as equally as any other literature,” said Wood.
Greta Livraria has become the heart of a community that gathers regularly at the store to celebrate its efforts to value diverse perspectives and carve out a literary landscape that better reflects society.
12. Why did Lorena Travassos found Greta Livraria
A. To create a community for book lovers.
B. To provide a space for authors to gather.
C. To help women writers get social attention.
D. To encourage females to achieve their ambitions.
13. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Women’s writing. B. Respect for writers.
C. The book subscription service. D. Rachel Wood’s feeling.
14. What can we learn from Rachel Wood’s words in paragraph 4
A. More and more women are devoted to writing.
B. Physical shops’ opening has contributed to book sales.
C. The status of women’s literature has greatly improved.
D. Bookstores filled with female writing are gaining popularity.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. New Bookstores Give Voice to Female Authors
B. She Said: A Leader in Selling Female-authored Books
C. Greta Livraria: A Pioneer in Promoting Literary Works
D. Bookselling Campaigns Give Rise to the Diversity of Literature

A prom (畢業舞會) is an event that every student is dreaming of. And if they’re not dreaming of it they’re certainly looking forward to it. It’s the young boys’ and girls’ chance to spend a beautiful night with their schoolmates and friends, an opportunity to have fun, dance, and enjoy themselves before their school years come to an end.
For young Dakota Wollan, the prom night was not something he couldn’t wait for. In fact, he had no idea who to ask to go with him to the special event. When Dakota told his parents that he didn’t have anyone in mind, his dad had an idea. He figured, since Dakota’s great-grandma Madeline had never been to a prom, it would be fun to share this experience with her great-grandson.
When Dakota heard the suggestion, he felt it would be an honor and unforgettable night for them both to take his beloved great-grandma! So, he decided to ask his great-grandma with a proper proposal (舞會邀約). “I have this old truck she gave me. It’s a 1985 truck she handed down to me and I got it running again. So, I took that truck and made a sign,” he recalled. When the 92-year-old woman saw the sign, she was shocked. She couldn’t find a reason why a young man would want to spend such a special night with an elderly lady.
But she said “yes”. After all, Dakota had made it clear that if she didn’t go, he wouldn’t go either. So, she really didn’t have an option.
Madeline explained that she only attended high school for one year and a half, because her father got sick and she had to help on the farm. In fact, she didn’t even remember if there was such a thing back at her time. So, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to find out what this prom is all about.

1. 續寫詞數應為150個左右;

47. 參考范文:
Eventually, the big day came and the pair were ready to have the time of their lives. Dakota helped his great-grandma into his restored 1985 truck, her eyes sparkling with excitement. As they arrived at the hall, students turned to stare, whispers spreading through the crowd. But soon, their curiosity turned into admiration. The music began, and Dakota gently took Madeline’s hand, guiding her to the dance floor. Though her steps were slow, her laughter filled the room. Other students joined them, forming a circle to cheer for the extraordinary partners. Tears welled up in Madeline’s eyes as she whispered, “I never imagined I’d experience something so magical.” The touching scene was quietly filmed.
Such an inspiring moment was posted on social networking sites. The video of Dakota and Madeline dancing spread like wildfire overnight, with millions praising the teen’s kindness. News outlets interviewed the family, and Madeline became a local heroine. “This isn’t just about prom,” Dakota said in an interview. “It’s about honoring those who missed their chances to shine.” The school later announced a new tradition: inviting senior citizens to proms. Years later, Madeline’s prom photo still sat proudly on her dresser, a reminder that love goes beyond generations — and that it’s never too late to create memories.
