Afternoon Tea :16世紀,葡萄牙凱瑟琳公主嫁至英格蘭,并隨行帶去一些茶葉。她常常邀請貴婦們一同飲茶聊八卦,英倫貴族的茶文化開始形成。那時候的英國人一天只吃兩頓,一頓早午餐,一頓晚餐。晚餐時間一般在晚上8點以后。

平民的下午茶,選的是普通的茶葉,普通的餐具,搭配的卻是面包、火腿、牛肉、餡餅、土豆餅、焗豆等高熱量食物,目的純粹是為了充饑。
因為沒有沙發,只能選擇在高凳子、高腳餐桌上進行下午茶。所以,平民的下午茶叫“高茶”——High Tea。
