Welcome to the unit
By the end of this section, we will be able to:
1. understand the quote highlighting the importance of exploring our living planet;
2. introduce our favourite geological wonders shown in the video;
3. share their knowledge of geological wonders in China;
4. develop great interest in exploring our living planet.
In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous.

The quote means that everything in nature has something to make a person wonder.Mother Nature is full of magic and mystery and she is well worth exploring.

Narrator: It is often said that “seeing is believing”. This is true of many of the world’s natural wonders. It is not always possible for us to imagine the vitality and variety
of colours that Mother Nature uses to create her masterpieces. Take China’s Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark for example.
be true of 確實的; 符合的
vi·tal·ity /va t l ti/ [ U]生命力;活力;熱情,=vigour
One of its typical landforms consists of multicoloured folds of rocks, several hundred metres high. These amazing structures are made from red sandstone that was laid down at the bottom of a lake millions of years ago and then forced upwards by movements of the Earth’s plates. Carved by wind and rain, they stand in sharp contrast to the greens and greys of the plains nearby.
land·form / l ndf m/ 地形;地貌
sand·stone / s ndst n/ 砂巖

Another illustration of Mother Nature’s magical use of colours is Pamukkale in Turkey, famous for its brilliant white steps. This “cotton candy” landscape, with its striking formation and colour, draws visitors from around the world. The “waterfall” of rock, falling down the side of a valley, is the result of minerals left by flowing water.

Lake Hillier, located in Australia, is another masterpiece that Mother Nature has created with her unique paintbox. Take a look at Lake Hillier, and your eyes will be delighted by the soft pink of its still waters. Contrasted with the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, which is situated right next to Lake Hillier, its pink waters seem even more unreal.

Many scientists believe the pink colour is caused by a
microorganism which lives in the lake and produces a pigment also contained in carrots.
These are just three of the many incredible formations to be found around the world. They display colours that we could not possibly believe if we did not see them with our own eyes. Mother Nature has, indeed, a paintbox that any artist would love to own.

1. Which of these geological wonders attracts you most Why
I find China’s Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark the most attractive. The various multicoloured folds of rocks appear to be hand-painted and remind me of a beautiful rainbow. I think it is amazing that nature has “painted” such a perfect picture and I am glad I can enjoy its beauty.
Pamukkale in Turkey certainly captures my attention. The spectacular white steps really look like sweet and soft cotton candy—good enough to eat! I also find the
“waterfall” of rock really fascinating: it looks like water, but it is actually formed from minerals.
capture sb's attention/imagination/interest引起(注意、想象、興趣)
Pink is my favourite colour, so Lake Hillier in Australia attracts me most. The lake is extremely unusual and fascinating to look at. Besides, I am amazed that a
microorganism is the reason for its stunning colour. Nature is truly full of beautiful surprises.
2. What other geological wonders do you know about
I know of the Shilin UNESCO Global Geopark situated in Yunnan Province, China. The geopark conservation area contains 350 square kilometres of unusual karst formations that create a “stone forest”. It includes various karst shapes that look like tall pillars, swords, mushrooms and towers.
This area was once covered by an ancient sea, and shells and bones of dead sea animals were deposited, which would one day become limestone. When the sea disappeared, the layers of limestone were exposed and eroded over time to form the amazing stone forest
we see today.
I know about the Giant Crystal Cave in Naica, Mexico, which was accidentally discovered in 2000. It contains some of the biggest natural crystals ever found, with the largest recorded one being 11.4 metres long. It is believed that the brilliant white giant crystals were formed from a type of soft white mineral at an extremely slow rate over the course of at least 500,000 years.
Mexico/ meks k /
Situated in north-west China’s Qinghai Province, Aiken Spring in the Gobi Desert is dubbed the “Devil’s Eye”. Aiken Spring is 647 metres deep, the deepest hot spring in Qinghai. The water flowing out of the spring contains a high degree of sulphur, making the land around it barren. Rich in sulphur, the water of the lake dyes the surrounding land dark red and yellow. The lake appears to be an eye when seen from above.
dub /d b/ ( -bb- ) 把…
