Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door.Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule.First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn’t like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher’s name is Ms Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet” — she says “alligator”. She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼澤)”.
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything.Mr V., my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year.I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused.Last year was not a very “focused” year for me.While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook.I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.

My mom dropped me off at the school gate about five minutes before the bell.A little blonde (金黃色的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me.She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away.We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents (青少年) who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不愛活動的) lifestyle.Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position.Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risky behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use.Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risky behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risky behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard.“We didn’t expect that,” he says.“The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health care providers.“And early identifications (確認), support and treatment for mental health issues,” he says, “are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.”
9.Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible group”?
A.A teenager who drinks frequently.
B.A teenager who exercises regularly.
C.A teenager who skips school.
D.A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep.
10.What can we know about the new study?
A.It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data.
B.It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression.
C.It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression.
D.Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
11.What is Carli’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Unclear. B.Positive.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
12.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce a new therapy for teens’ mental disorder.
B.To warn about the unobserved signals for teens’ mental problems.
C.To share a novel psychological experiment with teens.
D.To caution teens against developing unhealthy habits.

My First Day at Senior High
Monday 4 September
[1]After I had pictured① it over and over again② in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up③ early and rushed④ out of the door in my eagerness⑤ [2]to get to know my new school.
[2]動詞不定式短語to get to know ...
The campus was still quiet when I arrived,so I decided to⑥ explore⑦ a bit.[3]I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard⑧ when I heard a voice behind me.“New here?” Turning around⑨,I saw a white-haired⑩ man.“Yes,” I replied.“[4]I’m wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile.“You’ll soon find out .”
  [3]該句包含了“be doing ...when ...”
life是從句中的主語,what是連接代詞,構成了what sth be like的固定搭配。
[5] How true these words were! When my English teacher stepped into the classroom, [6]I was surprised to see the same man I had met earlier.
[6]句中的to see ...earlier是動詞不定式作原因狀語,表示was surprised的原因。I had met earlier是定語從句,修飾前面的先行詞man,此處省略了關系代詞that (作賓語)。
“Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class.I’ll go first ...”
“What?!” I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start .“I should say my name,of course. But what else? What could I say [7]to make a good first impression? Something about my insect collection , perhaps.” I was organising my words in my head when the girl next to me gave me a nudge .“It’s your turn !”

A
Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous
even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my
junior high school is next door.Everything looked and felt different now
that I was in senior high.
After surviving two periods without too
much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period
changed everything.Mr V. , my English teacher, told us that we would
have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The
Odyssey this year.I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-
level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it
was to be focused.Last year was not a very “focused” year for
me.While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy
with a conversation on Facebook.I planned on stepping it up this year
because I wanted to stay an honor student.

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors —
drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert
parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds
that there’s another group of adolescents (青少年) who are in nearly
as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a
sedentary (不愛活動的) lifestyle.Of course, that may sound like a
description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is
teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are
truly in a dangerous position.Because their behaviors are not usually seen
as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk”
group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine
risky behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use,
heavy smoking and high media use.Their aim was to determine the
relationship between these risky behaviors and mental health issues in
teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risky behaviors was
most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this
group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk
group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with
more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard.“We didn’t expect that,” he says.“The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this
third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger —
nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the
study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is
that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental
health care providers.“And early identifications (確認), support and
treatment for mental health issues,” he says, “are the best ways to
keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.”
