Keep them out of reach of pets, as they’re considered toxic to cats and dogs.

Shreya Vemulapalli, a junior at The Harker School, founded nonprofit Cancel. Cancer. Culture.(CCC) in 2023 to help reveal hidden stories on cancer and encourage open conversations.
Vemulapalli made up her mind to challenge how cancer is viewed after she lost her father to cancer. While many people hear about cancer survivor stories, the reality for many people like her father, is that not everyone beats cancer. Vemulapalli thought that the stories of people who lost their lives to cancer deserve to be shared and can comfort others going through the same experience. Having a community aids the journey through cancer.
A central focus of CCC is to cultivate this community and make it accessible for those experiencing cancer. The experience leaves cancer patients emotionally separated from their loved ones. Through CCC, Vemulapalli has received messages from those who have faced cancer, further stressing the widespread need for connection.
Reflecting on her own experience, Vemulapalli recalled how she kept her story private, in fear that it made her different. However, she said she now recognizes the importance in sharing her experience and encourages others to do the same.
Looking ahead, Vemulapalli is set to release an anthology (選集), which will feature stories from cancer patients and survivors, offering diverse perspectives on the disease. CCC plans to host and attend fundraising events to continue building its community and connect more people.
Though CCC isn’t for everyone, Vemulapalli’s mission is meant to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds. She works to demonstrate how one can overcome instead of being overcome in the face of grief and pain.

Researchers have known for many years that there was more to ancient Greek and Roman statues than the plain white marble (大理石) you typically see in museums. Now, a researcher says there’s another aspect to these statues to consider: how they smelled.
Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were not just experienced visually. Cecilie Br ns, a senior researcher of the Glyptoteket museum’s collection of ancient Greek and Roman art in Copenhagen, Denmark, says ancient texts provide evidence that statues were often scented with perfumes (香料), oils and waxes. “These scents (香味) could help promote the interaction between the image and the observer, without the use of touch,” Br ns writes in her article.
A variety of flowers and herbs were used to make the perfumes, but evidence points to rose perfume being the most widely used type. Some old records show that people used nice-smelling oils on statues. On a Greek island called Delos, many stones with writing were found, and some of them list items like oils and perfumes.
It’s hard to find physical evidence of scents on statues , as the oils and waxes degrade over time. One exception is a statue of the Ptolemaic Queen Berenice II from the third century B.C. Br ns said previous research did not detect a scent, but did detect evidence of beeswax spread on the statue.
Verity Platt, a professor at Cornell University’s Department of Classics who specializes in Greek and Roman art history and was not involved in the study, said that among experts in classical studies, the idea that statues were scented is already well-established. But given the attention the study has received, it’s clear many people hadn’t heard about the practice before.

As climate change leads to more frequent and extreme weather events, water experts from around the world are urging greater use of digital technology to improve the management of dams and reservoirs (水庫). At a recent international conference held during the 28th International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) Congress in Chengdu, China, experts emphasized the importance of modernizing dam systems to face new global challenges.
Michel Lino, president of ICOLD, mentioned the critical role of dams in dealing with global challenges. “We are facing common challenges,” he stressed. “Whether it is climate change, aging infrastructure, water shortage, environmental pressure or extreme weather events, they are not limited to one country or one region. These problems go beyond borders and call for collective solutions,” he emphasized. Lino also warned that the engineering standards of traditional dam design and construction are now being tested by emerging risks, including more intense floods driven by climate change.
China’s Vice Minister of Water Resources, Wang Baoen, also noted the vital role of dams in managing floods, providing water, and supporting ecosystems. “But in the face of increasingly extreme weather events, the growing impact of human activities and the rapid advancement of socioeconomic development, humanity is faced with significant global challenges in ensuring the high-quality development and safety of reservoirs,” Wang said.
To tackle these challenges, China has been using advanced information technology to improve dam monitoring and safety. One of China’s latest innovations is the development of “digital twins” — virtual models that simulate (模擬) the behavior and performance of dams under different conditions. These digital systems help engineers predict problems precisely. They are seen as a cutting-edge solution to improve dam design, operations and risk management.
Wang said China is committed to sharing its approaches and experience with the global community. Experts believe that through smarter technology, stronger regulations, and better global coordination, dams can continue to play a major role in addressing climate challenges and securing a sustainable future.

W: Yeah. Mount Jiuhua is a scenic spot of “two mountains and one lake”—Mount Jiuhua, Mount Huang and Taiping Lake tourism development strategy in Anhui Province.
M: Sounds important. Has it always been called Mount Jiuhua
W: No. It was called Mount Lingyang during the Han dynasty. And during the Liang and Chen dynasties of the Southern Dynasties period, it was called Mount Jiuzi.
M: How did it get its current name then
W: A legend says that the great poet Li Bai of the Tang dynasty travelled here and wrote, “Magic is divided into two branches, sacred mountain generates nine glories.” From then on, it was named Mount Jiuhua.

W: On a bright day in early spring, a group of students from Green Valley School set off for a nature study trip to a peaceful valley surrounded by tall, green mountains. The air was fresh and clean after the rain, filled with the sweet smell of wildflowers.
Their teacher, Mr. Brown, led them to a big oak tree that stood tall and strong near the stream. He asked the students to sit down in a circle around the tree and listen carefully. “Nature has a voice,” he said, “and it’s telling us a story.” The students closed their eyes and listened. They heard the rustling of leaves as a gentle breeze passed through the branches, the singing of birds as they sang their morning songs. A small stream flowed gently through the valley, making a soft, bubbling sound as it wound its way over smooth stones.
Mr. Brown explained how everything in nature works together in harmony. The flowers need bees to fertilize them with pollen, the stream provides water for the animals, and the trees give shelter to the birds. He pointed out a bee landing on a wildflower and explained how the bee helps the flower grow by spreading its pollen. The students felt happy and amazed by the beauty of nature.
