In August 2024, two high school students, Rosa Mendoza Sosa and Shanni Valeria Mora Fajardo, from Mexico were awarded the Diploma of Excellence at the 2024 Stockholm Junior Water Prize. It is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who have developed research projects that can help solve major water challenges. The competition attracts tens of thousands of students from about 35 countries each year.
The two girls developed a process to efficiently reuse inked water, a common side product in various industries, making it a useful resource for growing vegetables. This method not only helps to save water but also promotes green agriculture.
The project idea was inspired by the girls’ link with their community’s textile heritage. “In our village, textiles are not just products; they are a symbol of our traditions, made with techniques passed down through generations,” explained Sosa, “but the use of artificial dyes (染料)mled to the direct disposal of dirty water into our environment.” This threatened their local water bodies and soil, endangering both the locals’ health and their environmentally friendly practices.
Faced with this dilemma, they made a filtration(過濾)system at home with materials from their area. They filled four containers with different kinds of materials, including cotton, charcoal, gravel, and sand. Then they measured pH levels and coloration before and after filtration. They noted changes in pH values, which now ranged from 7 to 8, making the water safe to drink.
The filtered water was then used to help spinach and radish seeds grow, and more tests are being planned for other appropriate vegetables. “By recycling and using water again, we can keep the environment clean while preserving our heritage,” said Sosa.

Many travellers are familiar with the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. However, less is known about the organization’s List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of “serious and specific dangers” due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.
For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and NeoMam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have created a series of GIFs to restore World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been preserved.
Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually. It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.
In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally restored to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls.
Time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Thanks to these photorealistic images and electronic devices, we can travel, without leaving home, to those places that, whatever their future may be, will always be part of the collective memory.

Restricting meals to early in the day did not affect weight among overweight adults with prediabetes or diabetes(糖尿病), according to a research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2020.
“We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy,” said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Most previous studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of eating in the day.”
Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants(參與者)（90%）were African American women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 pm. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 pm for the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study；then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
The analysis found that people in both groups lost weight and had decreased blood pressure no matter when they ate. "We thought that the time-restricted group would lose more weight,” Maruthur said. “Yet that didn't happen. We did not see any difference in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier versus later in the day. We did not see any effects on blood pressure either.”
The researchers are now collecting more detailed information on blood pressure recorded over 24 hours, and they will bring this information together with the results of a study on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin(胰島素)and other hormones and making analyses on the data. "Together, these findings will help us to more fully understand the effects of time-restricted eating on cardiometabolic(心血管代謝)health," Maruthur said.

原文：New York city’s road pricing is the first of its kind in the US. So, what is road pricing Well, it’s a fee charged per car with the goal of discouraging driving. So as of January 5th, driving into Manhattan got even pricier. Passenger vehicles now pay $9 during peak hours and 2.25 during off-peak hours overnight to enter Manhattan each day. Trucks will also be charged fees for peak and off-peak hours for each trip into Manhattan.
Road pricing has been a debated topic concept there for decades as early as the 1950s. In August 2024, two high school students, Rosa Mendoza Sosa and Shanni Valeria Mora Fajardo, from Mexico were awarded the Diploma of Excellence at the 2024 Stockholm Junior Water Prize. It is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who have developed research projects that can help solve major water challenges. The two girls developed a process to efficiently reuse inked water, a common side product in various industries, making it a useful resource for growing vegetables. This method not only helps to save water but also promotes green agriculture.
The project idea was inspired by the girls’ link with their community’s textile heritage. “In our village, textiles are not just products; they are a symbol of our traditions, made with techniques passed down through generations,” explained Sosa, “but the use of artificial dyes (染料)mled to the direct disposal of dirty water into our environment.” This threatened their local water bodies and soil, endangering both the locals’ health and their environmentally friendly practices.

Many travellers are familiar with the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. However, less is known about the organization’s List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of “serious and specific dangers” due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.
For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and NeoMam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have created a series of GIFs to restore World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been preserved.
Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually. It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.
In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally restored to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls.

Restricting meals to early in the day did not affect weight among overweight adults with prediabetes or diabetes(糖尿病), according to a research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2020.
“We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy,” said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Most previous studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of eating in the day.”
Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants(參與者)（90%）were African American women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 pm. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 pm for the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study；then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
The analysis found that people in both groups lost weight and had decreased blood pressure no matter when they ate. "We thought that the time-restricted group would lose more weight,” Maruthur said. “Yet that didn't happen. We did not see any difference in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier versus later in the day. We did not see any effects on blood pressure either.”
The researchers are now collecting more detailed information on blood pressure recorded over 24 hours, and they will bring this information together with the results of a study on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin(胰島素)and other hormones and making analyses on the data.
