Few people are aware that Waterloo Bridge, crossed by thousands of daily commuters (通勤者) and celebrated as a London landmark, was mainly built by a female workforce.
There were no written or photographic records of the women who built the bridge partly because the construction company that built it closed in the 1980s and with it went all the records. What was left was anecdotal (傳聞的) evidence, kept alive by the tourist boat skippers who had called it the Ladies Bridge.
During World War Ⅱ, with the majority of the active male labour force away at the front, women increasingly took on traditionally male roles. By 1944, 25,000 women were working in the construction industry, carrying out back-breaking tasks. These women were permitted to carry out this exhausting and dangerous work on the basis that it would only be temporary and that their pay would be lower than that of men. So the surge (激增) in women working in construction and engineering did not continue after the war.
September sees a series of events celebrating the unknown work of the large female workforce. Musician Claudia Molitor has created a 40-minute musical entitled “The Singing Bridge”, which runs at Somerset House from Sept.9th to Sept.25th. In late September, the “Light Up The Ladies Bridge” event saw the National Theatre's fly tower lit up by large-scale photographic projections (投影圖) of female construction workers working in construction during World War Ⅱ.

In movies and books, people often describe a defining moment when they figure out who they are. However, I never thought it actually happened in real life. I never expected to have a “moment” of my own. When it arrived, mine was much more powerful than I could have ever imagined.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mum for piano lessons in 2010.We were in the fallout of the recession (衰退).She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the measurements of a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mum saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mum said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in astonishment.
My school didn’t offer A Level Music. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts were difficult. Some of the questions involved the judgement about the composer or when the music was written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. I feel proud: It’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano: what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped spark my curiosity about how music works and the building blocks that form the pieces.

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner. “I'm not a trained musician, but I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group's official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn't have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don't turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot,” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said. “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up and coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I've had in my entire life.”

High school was a hard time for Me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (選拔)for the school's team because I didn't know anyone. The summer before my dad died, we moved house. Up until that point, our family had our own space to spread out. I was attending a weekend workshop. What the leader asked us to follow was simple enough. She was a good teacher—she described what we had to do, then showed us how, then asked us to do it—that's a typical teaching method.
But I was finding the do part far more difficult and stressful than I had expected. I was outside my comfort zone, feeling awkward and uncertain. I tried to follow her directions, but I made mistakes in front of the others, and it felt embarrassing.
Here's the thing: Although the act of learning is related to abilities, behaviour and methods, the experience of learning is emotional (激起感情的).And it's the emotional experience of learning—of being a beginner and making mistakes, often publicly—that keeps people from even trying to learn.

Tens of thousands of people from around the world threw tones of ripe tomatoes at each other Wednesday in an annual food fight that leaves the eastern Spanish town of Bunol covered in red pulp(醬). More than 40,000 people, including many visitors from Australia Britain and the United States, merrily took part this year in the food fight known as the “Tomatina”, now in its 64th year, a spokeswoman for Bunol’s town hall said.
A rocket fired from the town hall was the signal for start of the event for which local authorities provided 120 tons of tomatoes and participants were covered in pulp and standing ankle-deep in red pulp. Many men were shirtless while others wore old clothes, hard hats, goggles or protective plastic sheets. Shopkeepers put up huge plastic covers on their store fronts or boarded them up to protect their properties from the sea of red mush.
