Step 1 Leading in
  Greet the class and review the forms of communication they learnt in the last class.Ask students to recall some forms and make sentences using them.
Step 2 Work on 2a
1.Ask students to listen to the conversation and fill in the blanks.
2.Check the answers and have students read the conversation aloud.
Step 3 Work on 2b-2c
1.Ask students to read the conversation in 2a and answer the questions in 2b.
2.Then ask students to talk about how they communicate with different people in their life and complete the chart in 2c.
3.Check the answers and explain some useful language points in the conversation.
Step 4 Work on Pronunciation 2
1.Ask students to listen and read the sentences,noticing the linking,stress,intonation,and pauses.
2.Ask students to listen again and practise speaking with the correct linking,stress,intonation,and pauses.
Step 5 Work on 2d-2e
1.Ask students to listen to the conversation again and role play it in pairs,paying attention to the linking,stress,intonation,and pauses.
2.Then ask students to choose a situation from 2e and make up a conversation using the expressions in the box.
3.Choose several groups to share their conversations with the class.Give them some positive feedback.

2.Ask students to share their experiences of having good or bad conversations with their classmates.
Step 2 Work on 1a-1c
1.Ask students to think about what they talk about when they meet someone for the first time and share their ideas with a partner.
2.Ask students to read the text How to Make a Better Conversation and answer the questions in 1b.
3.Check the answers and ask students to summarize the tips for making a better conversation.Then ask them to complete the table in 1c.
4.Check the answers and explain some important language points in the text.
Step 3 Work on 1d-1e
1.Ask students to find out what the pronouns in bold refer to in 1d.Let them discuss with their partners.
2.Invite several students to share their answers in class and correct any mistakes.Then ask students to discuss the questions in 1e,for example,what makes a good listener and other tips for better communications.
Step 4 Work on 2a-2c
1.Ask students to add the proper suffix to each word in brackets in 2a to make a new word and complete the sentences.
2.Ask students to complete the sentences with the phrases in the box in 2b.Then check the answers and ask students to make their own sentences with these phrases.
3.Ask students to complete the sentences with the correct forms of the words in the box in 2c and put the sentences in the correct order to make a short passage.Then check the answers.
Step 5 Work on 3a-3b
1.Ask students to read the invitation letter in 3a and underline the date,time,place,and topic of the speech.
2.Then ask students to decide whether each sentence is the opening or the closing for an invitation letter.
3.Check the answers together and explain some important language points.
Step 6 Work on 3c
1.Let students write an invitation letter according to the requirements in 3c.Walk around to monitor students’ progress and offer help if necessary.

Step 2 Work on 4a-4b
1.Divide students into groups.Ask each student in the group to write one sentence beginning with “If...” on their own piece of paper.Then ask them to put all the pieces of paper into a box or jar.
2.The first person in the group picks one and reads it aloud.Others then add “if” sentences to continue the story.
Step 3 Work on 4c-4d
1.Ask students to take turns to add sentences until the story ends naturally.Each story should include at least five sentences.When a story ends,they should pick another piece of paper and take turns to tell the next story.
2.Select several groups to report their stories to the class.
3.After each presentation,the other students can give comments and suggestions.
Step 4 Work on Reflecting
