Every day, a ten-year-old boy would go on a walk up the hill with his father. One day, the boy said, “Dad, let’s have a race today. The one who reaches the top of the hill first wins.” His father smiled and agreed.
Then, both of them started running. After a while, the father suddenly stopped. “Are you tired, Dad ” the boy asked. “No. There are some small stones in my shoes. I need to take them out,” the father replied. The boy said he had stones in his shoes too, but he decided to clear them out after reaching the hill top. He quickly ran ahead while his father stopped to remove the stones.
Soon, the boy began to feel a lot of pain in his feet and had to slow down. His father caught up and asked, “Why don’t you get stones out of your shoes first ” “I don’t have time for that,” said the boy.
Before long, the father overtook the boy. The boy couldn’t even walk because of the pain. He stopped there and cried for help. The father quickly turned back, took off his shoes and noticed that the boy’s feet were injured. He carried him home and carefully treated his injuries (傷口).
“I told you to clear the stones first,” the father said.
“I thought if I stopped, I wouldn’t win the race,” the boy said.
“It’s not like that. If any problems come in our life, we should not put them off carelessly just because we think we don’t have time. ①Have you heard of the Cinderella (灰姑娘) story Do you know there are over a hundred different ways to tell the Cinderella story When writers tell the same story in a different way, it is called their “version” (版本) of the story. The story of Cinderella has many different versions. Let’s read two of them and find out how they are different.
②The version that most people know is the oldest one written in 1697 by Charles Perrault from France. This is the version where the birds help make Cinderella’s dress and the mice turn into carriage men (馬車夫) and help Cinderella go to the dance in a pumpkin carriage. In this version, many of the animals are Cinderella’s friends. They help her meet the Prince. Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily together ever after.
③In another version of this story written in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm from Germany, the birds help Cinderella in the whole story. Cinderella’s father gives her a little tree when he comes back from a party. She plants the little tree and her tears water it until it grows into a tall tree.
④The birds now live in the tree and they give Cinderella a dress of gold and shoes of gold. Cinderella goes to the party to meet and dance with the Prince. Later, he finds Cinderella at home doing work for her stepmother. Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily ever after.

From September to February each year, Dazhong Mountain in Chuxiong, Yunnan is home to more than 50,000,000 migratory birds (候鳥). People used to call the mountain Daqueshan, which means birdhunting mountain.
The villagers used to hunt birds on the mountain. Then one year, they couldn’t hear birds singing. People started to worry if migratory birds would return again. In 1984, the Hongtupo Forest Police Station was set up. The officers worked on the mountain, trying to find migratory birds and stop people from hunting them. The job was really difficult. They might lose their way or meet dangerous animals.
The officers also tried to tell villagers the importance of protecting birds and other wild animals. They visited the villagers door to door and helped them with farm work. They even organized activities in schools to get their messages across to children. Now, even children know that birds are to be loved.
The mountain is greener, the water is clearer, and more and more animals come to live here. It has become a bird-protecting mountain. Many people have opened bed-and-breakfasts (民宿) for birdwatchers.
“The village has changed a lot, and we don’t hunt birds anymore,” people say. Since people have stopped hunting, the police station now mainly works to save injured (受傷的) wildlife.

A fun city I’ve ever been to
Hi, boys and girls! Today I want to share my experience in Beijing with you.
I have visited Beijing three times with my family. It is in the north of China, and has over 21 million people. The city is famous for its long history and many places of great interest. The food is special, too—I love Beijing duck! The weather is hot in summer and very cold in winter.
During my trips, I visited the Great Wall, the Palace Museum, and the Bird’s Nest. I also tried traditional snacks like “tanghulu”.
I like Beijing because it mixes ancient culture with modern life perfectly. It’s truly an amazing city!
