But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received.I realised that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone. Books were my true friends back then.I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me. After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now.I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day. Kindness saved me when I needed help the most.Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.24.What was the author’s life like when he was 12?( )A.Boring. B.Peaceful.C.Unhappy. D.Meaningful.25.How did the volunteer work benefit the author?( )A.It made him popular in his town.B.It helped him find the meaning of life.C.It helped him understand others’ lives better.D.It helped to shape his dream career.26.Why did the author choose writing as his job?( )A.He was inspired by his teacher. B.He could pass positive energy to readers.C.He wanted to share his school experiences. D.He found he had a talent for writing.27.What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?( )A.Say “no” to bullies bravely. B.Make positive changes in their lives.C.Treat others with kindness in daily life. D.Learn to care more about others’ feelings.C In 1970, psychologist Walter Mischel famously placed a cookie in front of each of a group of children and gave them a choice: they could eat the cookie immediately, or they could wait until he returned and then be rewarded with a second. If they didn’t wait, however, they’d be allowed to eat only the first one.Not surprisingly, once he left the room, many children ate their cookies almost immediately.A few, though, resisted eating the first cookie long enough to receive the second.Mischel termed these children high-delay children. Interestingly, the children who were best able to delay gratification (滿足) later did better in school and had fewer behavioural problems than the children who could only resist eating the cookie for a few minutes — and, further, ended up on average with SAT scores that were 210 points higher. As adults, the high-delay children completed college at higher rates than the other children and then went on to earn higher incomes. In contrast, the children who had the most trouble delaying gratification had higher rates of incarceration (監禁) as adults and were more likely to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. All suggests that the ability to delay gratification — that is, desire control — may be one of the most important skills to learn to have a satisfying and successful life. The question is: how do we learn it? The answer may lie in the strategies Mischel’s high-delay children used.Rather than resist the urge to eat the cookie, these children distracted (轉移) themselves from the urge itself. They played with toys in the room, sang songs to themselves, and looked everywhere but at the cookie. In short, they did everything they could to put the cookie out of their minds.28. What should the children do to get a second cookie?( )A.They should leave later. B.They should wait longer.C.They should arrive earlier. D.They should study harder.29.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?( )A.How to be high-delay children. B.How high-delay children succeed.C.The problems with low-delay children. D.The advantages of high-delay children.30.Why did Walter Mischel give each of the children a cookie?( )A.To educate them. B.To do a research.C.To entertain them. D.To conduct a survey.31.What should we do to delay gratification according to the author?( )A.Set another new goal. B.Try to control the desire.C.Give up what you want completely. D.Forget what attracts you temporarily.D A study by researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has shown that the use of cool paint coatings in cities can help people feel up to 1.5 degrees Celsius cooler, making the urban area more comfortable for work and play. Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun’s heat to reduce surface heat. They have been used as one way to cool down the city area and mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in which urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlying surroundings. To date, most studies of cool paint coatings have been tested in some models, and understanding of its application in real-life context is limited. Now, NTU researchers have conducted a first of its kind practical study. The team coated the roofs, walls, and roads in Singapore and found that by comparison with an uncoated area, the coated environment was up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, with people heat comfort level improving by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Lead author Dr Kumar Donthu, who completed the work as a research fellow at Energy Research Institute, said, “Our study provides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and cool the urban environment. This is a small solution for cooling that has an immediate effect, compared to other choices. Moreover, by reducing the amount of heat absorbed in buildings, we also reduce indoor air-conditioning energy consumption (消耗). Findings from the study are not just for cities in Singapore where it is hot all year round, but for other urban areas around the world too.” The study, published in Sustainable Cities and Society in March, supports the NTU 2025 strategic plan, which seeks to deal with human’s great challenges on sustainability (持續性) and speed up research discoveries that reduce human impact on the environment.32.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 2 mean?( )A.Reduce. B.Form.C.Avoid. D.Explain.33.What do NTU researchers focus on at present?( )A.Coating experiments in laboratories. B.Changes of temperature comfort level.C.Real-world testing of cool paint coatings. D.Coating materials in various environments.34.What can be inferred about the use of cool paint coatings according to Dr Kumar Donthu?( )A.It’s simple but workable. B.It’s effective but short-sighted.C.It’s wide-ranging but demanding. D.It’s environmentally friendly but expensive.35.What can be a suitable title for the text?( )A.NTU Study: Urban Heat Island Effect B.Cooling Cities: NTU’s Paint SolutionC.Big Challenge: Urban Heat Reduction D.Cool Paint: The Key to Urban Comfort第二節(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分) 閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。 Everyone knows you can save money on books by checking them out at the library instead of buying them.36.( ) Here are four surprising ways the library can help you save money. ·Reserve free tickets to local attractions. Her artworks, filled with lively colours, caught the beauty of her surroundings. Despite her talent, Mei often battled with self-doubt. She wondered if her skills were truly excellent or if she was just fortunate. One day, Mei heard about a painting contest in the town called the “Sunlit Art Challenge”. Determined to prove herself and remove the doubts, Mei quickly signed up for it. The contest stirred a mix of excitement and nervousness in her. Mei spent countless hours perfecting her painting technique, pouring her heart and soul into her works. For the contest, Mei painted a beautiful sunrise over the sea. The sun just started to rise above the horizon, its bright light beginning to shine over the ocean. The sun’s rays looked like golden light, spreading across the water and making it shine like a giant mirror. As the sun rose higher, it looked like a bright ball of fire, warming the sea and making the waves shine brightly. The sky changed colours too, from a soft blue to bright oranges, pinks and reds. It was like watching the day begin right there on her canvas (畫布). Mei’s painting captured the peaceful yet lively scene of the sun’s first rays touching the vast ocean, symbolizing hope. On the day of the contest, the village square was filled with excitement. Artists from near and far displayed their works. Mei set up her painting, feeling both proud and anxious. As the judges evaluated Mei’s painting, her heart raced with nervousness. Since their expressions were hard to read, Mei felt like her doubts were right, that she wasn’t as good as she hoped. When the host started to announce the winners, Mei listened with hope and curiosity. But sadly her name wasn’t called. Disappointment washed over her, and she forced a smile, applauding the winners. After the contest, Mei felt disheartened. She thought her painting had failed to impress anyone, and she lost her motivation to lift her brush. At that time, Mr Zhang, a villager, approached Mei. Mr Zhang told Mei that Mei’s painting was excellent and moved him. Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting. (Text 1)M:Know what? They wanted to play for 90 hours and add 6 hours to the record. Each team had 9 players, with 5 at a time. The boys decided each person would play 21.5 hours and then rest for 2 hours. Then they started at 6 o’clock in the evening. The first night was very hard for the players. When it was their turn to rest, they were too excited to fall asleep at once. After sleeping for a short time, they had to play again. On the second night, they fell asleep as soon as they stopped. Some of them had trouble with their feet and hands, but the only serious problem was the mental one. Each boy was thinking: Why am I doing this? How can I play any longer? After the third night, the players knew they could finish the 90 hours. The basketball on the fourth night was very slow. But in the final hours, the players got better. For the last few minutes, the players looked as fresh as when they started. The Volunteer Project in Sri Lanka志愿服務期限最短。 The Volunteer Project in Portugal中的Price: £459可知,在葡萄牙參加志愿者項目需要459英鎊。 The Volunteer Project in Iceland中的Help to reforest some areas so the trees can help to clean the air可知,志愿者在冰島能幫助種樹。 One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change. 下文a phenomenon ...outlying surroundings是對the Urban Heat Island effect的解釋,結合畫線詞前的one way to cool down the city area可知,這種涂料可以減少城市熱島效應。 This is a small solution for cooling that has an immediate effect, compared to other choices. Here are four surprising ways the library can help you save money. Our son, Andrew, was always very active and loved playing sports. Since then, we began a seven-year 43 for answers. 49.A 根據下文Andrew had a rare neurological disorder可知,醫生知道了安德魯生病的原因。 Andrew took his first pill that Friday and within 24 hours he was able to stand可推知,安德魯的病其實很好治療。 此處為be doing sth when ... My five-year-old son, Tenyson, and I,謂語動詞應用復數。 故填were leaving。 故填to raise。 come up with“想出”。故填with。 故填and。 65.Although/Though/While 考查狀語從句。 故填Although或Though或While。 A Volunteer Activity Celebrating World Water Day World Water Day falls on 22 March every year. With tears in his eyes, he told her how her painting of the sunrise had profoundly touched him. Mr Zhang explained that he had been going through a tough time and that Mei’s painting reminded him of the beauty and hope in the world. He described how the warm colours and the image of the sun rising over the ocean gave him a sense of peace and comfort. Mr Zhang’s words made Mei realize that her works had a significant impact, reaching beyond just winning contests. Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting. She started to see her art not just as a means to achieve personal recognition, but as a tool for healing and bringing joy to others. Mei began to paint with a new purpose, creating artworks that depicted scenes of hope and beauty. Her art soon became a source of warmth and inspiration in her community. Through her journey, Mei discovered the true essence of her art. It was not just about creating beautiful scenes on canvas, but about touching hearts and warming souls.9 / 9(共96張PPT)單元質量檢測(二) Making a difference(滿分150分,時間120分鐘)第一部分 聽力(共兩節,滿分30分)第一節(共5小題;每小題1.5分,滿分7.5分)聽下面5段對話。 1. Interestingly, the children who were best able to delay gratification(滿足) later did better in school and had fewer behavioural problemsthan the children who could only resist eating the cookie for a fewminutes — and, further, ended up on average with SAT scores thatwere 210 points higher. As adults, the high-delay children completedcollege at higher rates than the other children and then went on to earnhigher incomes. In contrast, the children who had the most troubledelaying gratification had higher rates of incarceration (監禁) as adultsand were more likely to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. All suggests that the ability to delay gratification — that is, desirecontrol — may be one of the most important skills to learn to have asatisfying and successful life. The question is: how do we learn it? The answer may lie in the strategies Mischel’s high-delay childrenused.Rather than resist the urge to eat the cookie, these childrendistracted (轉移) themselves from the urge itself. They played with toysin the room, sang songs to themselves, and looked everywhere but atthe cookie. In short, they did everything they could to put the cookie outof their minds. 28. Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun’s heat toreduce surface heat. They have been used as one way to cool down the cityarea and mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in whichurban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlyingsurroundings. To date, most studies of cool paint coatings have been tested insome models, and understanding of its application in real-life context islimited. Now, NTU researchers have conducted a first of its kind practicalstudy. The team coated the roofs, walls, and roads in Singapore andfound that by comparison with an uncoated area, the coated environmentwas up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, with people heatcomfort level improving by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Lead author Dr Kumar Donthu, who completed the work as aresearch fellow at Energy Research Institute, said, “Our studyprovides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and coolthe urban environment. This is a small solution for cooling that has animmediate effect, compared to other choices. Moreover, by reducingthe amount of heat absorbed in buildings, we also reduce indoor air-conditioning energy consumption (消耗). Findings from the study arenot just for cities in Singapore where it is hot all year round, but for otherurban areas around the world too.” The study, published in Sustainable Cities and Society in March, supports the NTU 2025 strategic plan, which seeks to deal withhuman’s great challenges on sustainability (持續性) and speed upresearch discoveries that reduce human impact on the environment. 32. Her artworks, filled with lively colours, caughtthe beauty of her surroundings. Despite her talent, Mei often battled withself-doubt. She wondered if her skills were truly excellent or if she wasjust fortunate. One day, Mei heard about a painting contest in the town called the“Sunlit Art Challenge”. Determined to prove herself and remove thedoubts, Mei quickly signed up for it. The contest stirred a mix ofexcitement and nervousness in her. Mei spent countless hours perfectingher painting technique, pouring her heart and soul into her works. For the contest, Mei painted a beautiful sunrise over the sea. Thesun just started to rise above the horizon, its bright light beginning toshine over the ocean. The sun’s rays looked like golden light, spreading across the water and making it shine like a giant mirror. As thesun rose higher, it looked like a bright ball of fire, warming the sea andmaking the waves shine brightly. The sky changed colours too, from asoft blue to bright oranges, pinks and reds. It was like watching the daybegin right there on her canvas (畫布). Mei’s painting captured thepeaceful yet lively scene of the sun’s first rays touching the vast ocean, symbolizing hope.
