Cristina Mittermeier is a marine biologist, activist and multi-award-winning photographer who has given her life to ocean protection. Recognised as being one of the world’s most influential conservation photographers, Cristina has travelled to 132 countries to achieve her goal — to communicate the immediate need to protect wild places.
She began her career as a marine biologist, but soon realised that she could better work for the interests of the oceans and the planet through her camera than with scientific data. In her eyes, science is basic to understanding what is happening to our planet, but it fails to convey the emotions that make us care.
According to Cristina, photography allows us to humanise (使人性化) stories and create something meaningful, and she had an urgent need to share the difficult situation of the planet. For her, it’s all about the emotional connections we can establish with the subject matter. She loves creating pictures that engages people in conversations and makes them stop and think. Establishing a successful career as a photographer has not been an easy journey. She worked hard at teaching herself the basics of photography and then she went back to school to learn more about the underpinnings of fine art.
When asked what has inspired her focus on marine life, she replied, “The ocean is barely mentioned but it is the largest ecosystem on our planet and is the ecosystem that has the most influence on Earth. It absorbs at least 25% of all emissions and most of the heat on our planet. I want people to recognise that the ocean isn’t just hurt by climate change — it is our solution. If our oceans die — and they are dying — we will die with them. Life on Earth is not possible without a living ocean.”
24.What goal did Cristina intend to achieve in her travels?( )
A.To take more wonderful pictures.
B.To urge people to protect the wild places.
C.To work for the non-for-profit organization.
D.To become the world’s most influential photographer.
25.What makes Cristina think she can better work as a photographer?( )
A.She was bored with her career as a marine biologist.
B.She can’t understand what is happening to our planet.
C.She can convey emotional information through her camera.
D.She wants to establish a successful career as a photographer.
26.Why does Cristina focus on the ocean?( )
A.Because of the marine life. B.Because of the great emissions.
C.Because of her love for the ocean. D.Because of the ocean’s importance.
27.Which of the following can best describe Cristina?( )
A.Powerful. B.Patient. C.Responsible. D.Intelligent.

A 16th century drawing by one of the key figures of the German Renaissance has been valued in excess of $10 million after it was initially purchased at a yard sale for just $30 in 2017. According to Agnews Gallery — the London auction house in possession of the artwork — Albrecht Dürer, who died in 1528, is regarded as both the greatest German artist of his time and as one of the most important artists and intellectuals of the European Renaissance. The drawing that has been rediscovered is titled “The Virgin and Child”. As Dürer’s career and legacy have been studied in depth since his death, it is extremely rare to find unknown works of his.
Boston-based art collector Clifford Schorer, who is a consultant to the gallery, added Thursday that he came across the rare artwork, thought to have been completed in 1503, by chance on the way to a party in Massachusetts in 2019. He had forgotten to bring a gift to the party, so he went to a bookstore, which sold collectable volumes. The bookseller told him his friend had a Dürer drawing and asked if he would take a look at it. Schorer agreed, but held out little hope.
“The artwork had been purchased at a yard sale at the home of an architect who had been gifted the piece from his art dealer father,” Schorer said. “Generally speaking, it’s an inverse (反向的) relationship between how dramatic the claim is and how much of a let down it is. For example if someone tells me they have a Leonardo da Vinci, I’m usually pretty confident I’m going to see some images that are unimpressive.”
But when he arrived to examine the artwork weeks later, he was taken aback by its quality. “It was like experiencing a kind of electricity. When you’re in my world you spend your life looking for unknown things that lead to fascinating research avenues ...and I could see I was at the beginning of something extremely exciting,” Schorer said.
28.Why is it rare to find the unknown works of Albrecht Dürer’s?( )
A.He was a key figure of the German Renaissance.
B.His real works were only sold at the yard sales.
C.His works were studied carefully after he died.
D.He had few works like “The Virgin and Child”.
29.What did Clifford Schorer do on his way to a party?( )
A.He went to buy a gift. B.He collected old volumes.
C.He went to a gallery. D.He visited his old friends.
30.Why did Clifford Schorer mention the example of Leonardo da Vinci?( )
A.To show the value of Dürer’s drawing. B.To describe his contradictory feelings.
C.To improve his own confidence in art. D.To show the painting is unimpressive.
31.What does the underlined phrase “taken aback” in the last paragraph mean?( )
A.Sold. B.Shocked. C.Excited. D.Excused.

An artificial intelligence system that has recently caught the spotlight for numerous reasons has been asked to produce images of real-life iconic (偶像的) cartoon characters.
The artificial intelligence that was requested to produce the images is called Midjourney which is an AI program that is designed to produce images from textual descriptions. The tool recently went into open in July and has since grown in popularity as users are able to enter descriptions of whatever they can think of to produce a completely unique image. Midjourney is extremely impressive, as I have personally used it to generate several wallpaper images for my desktop.
The AI system is capable of recognizing specific words such as 4K, real-life, cartoon, high detail and more. Using these words and more, you can write a prompt (提示符) such as: portrait image of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty in real life. Taking this principle of being able to request basically whatever you want, one, Midjourney, user decided to create an award-winning image and enter it into an art competition undisclosed (秘密的) of its creation process.
Jason Allen, a board game director, spent weeks improving the prompt that he was entering into Midjourney and eventually generated three images that he was happy with.
Allen entered the AI-generated images in the Digital Art category at Colorado State Fair under his own name along with “via Midjourney”. Allen won first place and used the opportunity to make a statement about AI art being accepted among the community, saying, “Is it common for artists to explain their process just for the sake of clarification? Are they judging the art or the method by which it was created?”
32.What is the text mainly about?( )
A.An AI system is able to draw cartoons.
B.An AI system makes pictures all by itself.
C.An AI system creates art works instead of artists.
D.An AI system produces pictures based on requirements.
33.What made Midjourney popular?( )
A.Its style. B.Its function.
C.Its shape. D.Its appearance.
34.Why did the author mention Jason Allen in the last two paragraphs?( )
A.To show his great talent in art.
B.To explain how Midjourney works.
C.To prove Midjourney can do excellent work.
D.To appeal to artists to explain their creating process to people.
35.Where is the text most likely from?( )
A.A newspaper. B.A travel guide.
C.A science fiction. D.A textbook.

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
  閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go and see Jeff and bring him the chair to repair.Go right now.”
It was such a strong impulse (沖動(dòng)) that I hurriedly dressed and lugged (用力拖) a dining-room chair to his door.Jeff was a neighbour who had lost his wife a while back, and he occasionally did minor repairs for me on furniture because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while.I was about to walk away when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts.I felt awkward about disturbing him so early.I greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room.He looked depressed and not his usual self.He said he had had a stroke (中風(fēng)) recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend outpatient physical therapy (門診理療).He had to build his strength back up.I apologized for the chair and told him, under the circumstances, I would just bring it back home.He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. It had scared him to be in the hospital. He hadn’t been there since his wife had died.Having worked as a mental health therapist, I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed away and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood lighten.
We even started talking about his diet and how he had not been eating. He said the dietician had told him to eat more fruits and vegetables, but he didn’t care for them.Mostly, I was concerned because he was not eating much at all.I stayed talking with him until I saw his mood lift and the tension leave his face.
注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
2.請按如下格式作答。
After I left his home, I went to the grocery store and gathered ingredients.

The next time I saw him, he said the dish was wonderful.

M:Here is the news from Dallas.
Walmart posted its worst monthly sales results in history, declaring a large decrease in April.
Monthly sales measure sales gains or losses at stores open for at least a year. They are an obvious sign of the returns a supermarket earns, and thus an influence on the amount of profit it makes. Most US supermarkets are reporting their April results on Thursday.
Walmart’s 5% drop in the four-week period fell below its earlier forecast of “flat” sales of a 2% to 3% decrease. In a recorded phone message Thursday, Walmart blamed bad weather last month in most US areas.
Walmart’s chief financial officer warned a month ago that the company’s earlier goal of earnings for its latest quarter would be “a challenge” to achieve, considering what the company foresaw as a difficult April. The company didn’t provide an update. It did, however, predict a sales gain for this month of a small decrease.Walmart will report its results for its first quarter on Tuesday.

It was like experiencing a kind of electricity.可知,看到畫時(shí),Schorer感覺像被電擊了。由此推斷,當(dāng)Clifford Schorer看到這幅畫時(shí),他對這幅畫的質(zhì)量感到震驚。

After I left his home, I went to the grocery store and gathered ingredients.I made him a hot meal, which I thought would lift his spirits.Carefully, I cut up some vegetables and prepared a dish for him.I believed it was the best dish I’d ever made. Then, I made some home-made biscuits and prepared fresh fruit for dessert.I dropped it off for him.He was delighted that someone cared.Emotionally, he seemed in a better place.
The next time I saw him, he said the dish was wonderful.Though I am usually skeptical of praise, I understood because I’d made it with love.He talked of his next physical-therapy appointment.I made sure he had transportation; I would gladly have driven him, but he had figured it out. What’s more, he repaired my chair. He said it gave him a reason to get his strength back.He had returned to his usual self, and his confidence had returned.I was so thankful for the inner voice that directed me to see him that morning.

Cristina Mittermeier is a marine biologist, activist and multi-award-
winning photographer who has given her life to ocean protection.
Recognised as being one of the world’s most influential conservation
photographers, Cristina has travelled to 132 countries to achieve her
goal — to communicate the immediate need to protect wild places.
She began her career as a marine biologist, but soon realised that
she could better work for the interests of the oceans and the planet through
her camera than with scientific data. In her eyes, science is basic to
understanding what is happening to our planet, but it fails to convey the
emotions that make us care.
According to Cristina, photography allows us to humanise (使人
性化) stories and create something meaningful, and she had an urgent
need to share the difficult situation of the planet. For her, it’s all about
the emotional connections we can establish with the subject matter. She
loves creating pictures that engages people in conversations and makes
them stop and think. Establishing a successful career as a photographer
has not been an easy journey. She worked hard at teaching herself the
basics of photography and then she went back to school to learn more
about the underpinnings of fine art.
When asked what has inspired her focus on marine life, she
replied, “The ocean is barely mentioned but it is the largest ecosystem
on our planet and is the ecosystem that has the most influence on Earth. It
absorbs at least 25% of all emissions and most of the heat on our planet. I
want people to recognise that the ocean isn’t just hurt by climate
change — it is our solution. If our oceans die — and they are dying — we
will die with them. Life on Earth is not possible without a living ocean.”

A 16th century drawing by one of the key figures of the German
Renaissance has been valued in excess of $10 million after it was initially
purchased at a yard sale for just $30 in 2017. According to Agnews
Gallery — the London auction house in possession of the artwork —
Albrecht Dürer, who died in 1528, is regarded as both the greatest
German artist of his time and as one of the most important artists and
intellectuals of the European Renaissance. The drawing that has been
rediscovered is titled “The Virgin and Child”. As Dürer’s career and
legacy have been studied in depth since his death, it is extremely rare to
find unknown works of his.
Boston-based art collector Clifford Schorer, who is a consultant to
the gallery, added Thursday that he came across the rare artwork,
thought to have been completed in 1503, by chance on the way to a party
in Massachusetts in 2019. He had forgotten to bring a gift to the party, so
he went to a bookstore, which sold collectable volumes. The bookseller
told him his friend had a Dürer drawing and asked if he would take a look
at it. Schorer agreed, but held out little hope.
“The artwork had been purchased at a yard sale at the home of an
architect who had been gifted the piece from his art dealer father,”
Schorer said. “Generally speaking, it’s an inverse (反向的)
relationship between how dramatic the claim is and how much of a let
down it is. For example if someone tells me they have a Leonardo da
Vinci, I’m usually pretty confident I’m going to see some images that
are unimpressive.”
But when he arrived to examine the artwork weeks later, he was
taken aback by its quality. “It was like experiencing a kind of electricity.
When you’re in my world you spend your life looking for unknown
things that lead to fascinating research avenues ...and I could see I was at
the beginning of something extremely exciting,” Schorer said.

An artificial intelligence system that has recently caught the spotlight
for numerous reasons has been asked to produce images of real-life iconic
(偶像的) cartoon characters.
The artificial intelligence that was requested to produce the images is
called Midjourney which is an AI program that is designed to produce
images from textual descriptions. The tool recently went into open in July
and has since grown in popularity as users are able to enter descriptions of
whatever they can think of to produce a completely unique image.
Midjourney is extremely impressive, as I have personally used it to
generate several wallpaper images for my desktop.
The AI system is capable of recognizing specific words such as 4K,
real-life, cartoon, high detail and more. Using these words and more,
you can write a prompt (提示符) such as: portrait image of Rick
Sanchez from Rick and Morty in real life. Taking this principle of being
able to request basically whatever you want, one, Midjourney, user
decided to create an award-winning image and enter it into an art
competition undisclosed (秘密的) of its creation process.
Jason Allen, a board game director, spent weeks improving the
prompt that he was entering into Midjourney and eventually generated
three images that he was happy with.
Allen entered the AI-generated images in the Digital Art category at
Colorado State Fair under his own name along with “via Midjourney”.
Allen won first place and used the opportunity to make a statement about
AI art being accepted among the community, saying, “Is it common
for artists to explain their process just for the sake of clarification? Are
they judging the art or the method by which it was created?”

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to
read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go and see
Jeff and bring him the chair to repair.Go right now.”
It was such a strong impulse (沖動(dòng)) that I hurriedly dressed and
lugged (用力拖) a dining-room chair to his door.Jeff was a neighbour
who had lost his wife a while back, and he occasionally did minor repairs
for me on furniture because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while.I was about to walk away
when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts.I felt
awkward about disturbing him so early.I greeted him and then asked if he
could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room.He
looked depressed and not his usual self.He said he had had a stroke (中
風(fēng)) recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend
outpatient physical therapy (門診理療).He had to build his strength
back up.I apologized for the chair and told him, under the
circumstances, I would just bring it back home.He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. It had scared him to be in the hospital. He
hadn’t been there since his wife had died.Having worked as a mental
health therapist, I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed
away and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we
talked, the more I saw his mood lighten.
We even started talking about his diet and how he had not been
eating. He said the dietician had told him to eat more fruits and
vegetables, but he didn’t care for them.Mostly, I was concerned

參考范文:
After I left his home, I went to the grocery store and gathered
ingredients.I made him a hot meal, which I thought would lift his
spirits.Carefully, I cut up some vegetables and prepared a dish for him.I
believed it was the best dish I’d ever made. Then, I made some home-
made biscuits and prepared fresh fruit for dessert.I dropped it off for
him.He was delighted that someone cared.Emotionally, he seemed in a
better place.
The next time I saw him, he said the dish was wonderful.Though I
am usually skeptical of praise, I understood because I’d made it with
love.He talked of his next physical-therapy appointment.I made sure he
had transportation; I would gladly have driven him, but he had figured
it out. What’s more, he repaired my chair. He said it gave him a reason
to get his strength back.He had returned to his usual self, and his
confidence had returned.I was so thankful for the inner voice that directed
me to see him that morning.
