The Yangtze River is the longest river in China. It is the home to over 400 species (物種) like the Chinese sturgeon (中華鱘). The Chinese sturgeon is one of the largest fish in the world and it’s long. A Chinese sturgeon can grow up to 5m long, over 500kg and live to be 40 years old. They’ve lived on the earth for about 140,000,000 years, so people call them a “living fossil (化石)”.
The Chinese sturgeon was common in the river before. However, it’s in danger now. Fishing too much in the 1970s made the species fewer and fewer. And in 1981, the building of the Gezhouba Dam put the sturgeon into two groups. The two groups could not get together. As a result, the species became even fewer. So the help for the Chinese sturgeon is very necessary.
Luckily, China already took action. On May 14th, Shanghai passed a new rule to help the Chinese sturgeon. This was the first rule in the country to help one fish in danger. From January 2020, the country also started to stop people from fishing in the Yangtze River. It will last (持續) for ten years. We believe the Chinese sturgeon will become more and more. We should also play a part in saving the species in danger.
9. From Paragraph 1, we can know about the common ________ of the Chinese sturgeon.
A. food B. age C. color
10. What does “took action” mean in Chinese
A. 實現夢想 B. 放棄希望 C. 采取行動
11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The Chinese sturgeon is common now.
B. People call the Chinese sturgeon a living fossil.
C. There are fewer than 400 species in the Yangtze River.
12. In the last paragraph, the writer wants us to ________.
A. save the Chinese sturgeon B. make a new rule C. clean the Yangtze River
D
There are so many accidents in our daily life, which cause many people to lose their lives. Except for accidents, natural disasters (自然災害) are also a threat (威脅) to people’s lives. What can we do if we are caught in them
Floods (洪水) took thousands of lives every year. The easiest way to keep yourself safe is to get to higher grounds like the top of a building. Do not try to swim across a river because no matter how good a swimmer you are, the water will run too quickly for you. Another important thing is not to panic (慌張), shout or do anything that may make you weak. Save your energy and wait for help.
These years, earthquakes happen more often than in the past. Luckily, nowadays, a few seconds before the earthquake comes, your cell phones can receive warnings. Pay attention to them. If you are at home, turning off electricity (電) and gas as quickly as possible may lower (降低) the risk of explosion (爆炸). What’s more, news reports say sometimes jumping out of a tall building may be more dangerous than staying where you are.
Fire is also dangerous. If your clothes are on fire, do not run around and hope the wind helps put out the fire. The right thing to do is to roll (打滾) on the ground. Do not use elevators when fire happens. Smoke can choke (嗆) you, so prepare a wet towel and lower your body to avoid (避免) smoke. If you have to get out of the building, try to use sheets (床單) as a life-saving rope. Never jump directly out.
13. When floods come, what should we do
①We should get to higher grounds.
②We should prepare a wet towel.
③We should swim across the river.
④We should try to save our energy.
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①④
14. If your clothes are on fire, what’s the right thing you should do
A. We should run around and hope the wind helps put out the fire.
B. We should roll on the ground.
C. We can’t try to use sheets as a life-saving rope.
15. To lower the risk of explosion when earthquakes come, what may you do
A. You may pay attention to the warnings.
B. You may turn off electricity and gas.
C. You may lower your body to avoid the smoke.
16. Which of the following shows the structure (結構) of the passage
A. B. C.

“I’ll get her some with my dollar,” said Beth.
“No, I shall!” cried Amy.
“I’m the oldest—” began Meg.
“I’m the man of the family now. Father is away, and I shall buy them,” said Jo.
“Let’s each get her something and not get anything for ourselves,” said Beth.
“That’s a kind idea!” said Jo. “What shall we get ”
Everyone thought for a moment, then Meg said, “I’ll give her a nice pair of gloves.”
“The best army slippers,” said Jo.
“Some handkerchiefs (手帕)”, said Beth.

Dear Jake,
Summer vacation is coming Students are all going to spend their holidays reading widely.
Good books are valuable treasures. Among all the books I’ve read, The Old Man and the Sea is my favourite. It was written by Hemingway. My mother gave it to me as a birthday present. I have had it for two years. The book tells a story about a fisherman. He catches a huge fish, but it is hard to take it home. On the way back, he has to fight against the shark and the sea.
I like the book best because the fisherman never gives up when meeting with difficulties. I still remember: Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated. The fisherman’s spirit encourages me most. We can do almost anything if we never give up.
