Danny was just putting his cleats (訓練鞋) into his locker when his teammate, Max, told him that Mr. Irving, the principal (校長) wanted to see him in the office.
He made his way to the office, wondering why. He was a quite good student, so it wasn’t his grades. Though, to be honest, he’d been making things a little worse, especially that last math test. But this was the first time the baseball team went into the state finals in 11 years and as the star pitcher (明星投手), Danny had helped a lot. Surely there is nothing that can’t be excused.
No more thinking, he stepped inside to find Mr. Irving, Coach Geller, and surprisingly, his mother was waiting for him and looked as if she had been crying. Uh, oh. He must really be in trouble.
Mr. Irving told the truth that Danny wouldn’t be able to play in the final. Coach Geller had left Danny’s name off the roster (候選名單) by accident, and once handed in, adding more was not allowed.
“We’re very sorry, Danny,” said Mr. Irving, “I have been trying to fix it, but so far, no luck.” Danny didn’t know what to say.
As the game began, Danny cheered for his team, having a mix of feelings as its score rose and fell. In the bottom of the ninth, Simon hit a winning run, making it certain that their team won. Danny jumped out of his seat and rushed to the field to celebrate with his teammates, giving each other high-fives.
That night, as he told the story, his mother listened quietly and said, “You should have played. That was your win, and it was taken from you.”
“No,” he said with the biggest smile of his life, “That was my win, and Max’s, and Simon’s too. Don’t you get it, Mom That’s what it means to be part of a team. I helped get us to the final. And in my own way, I helped win it, too.”
His mother looked at him almost like she’d never seen him before. Then she smiled and hugged him tightly.
“You’re right, Danny! I’m so proud of you!”
36. How did Danny feel before stepping into the office
A. Excited to see the principal. B. Worried he was in trouble.
C. Nervous about his grades. D. Curious about the reason for the meeting.
37. What news did Danny learn from Mr. Irving

Did you take part in any tree-planting activities this past March 12 Or maybe you went to check out the little tree you planted a few years ago Standing beside it, you might have been amazed at how much it has changed. It’s really great to watch a tree grow year by year. Even the tallest ones of them grow from tiny seeds. Have you ever wondered how
A full-grown tree may drop hundreds or even thousands of seeds (種子) a year. Inside each seed is something called embryo (胚). Think of it as a small group of cells (細胞). These cells are ready to form roots, stem (莖), and first leaves.
Once the covering around the seed gets wet, the embryo cells, which have been patiently waiting, suddenly come to life. They start to grow and break out. This is called germination. First, the roots develop and push out and down into the soil. This makes sure the new plant can get water from the soil. Then the stem grows up and makes the first leaves. As these leaves produce “food” in the sunlight, the plant gets the energy to grow more new leaves.
Let’s imagine you drive a nail (釘子) into a tree at one meter above the ground. What will you see when you come back in ten years The tree will be much taller, but the nail will still be only one meter above the ground. That’s because trees get taller by growing upwards from the top. At the same time, their trunk gets thicker by growing outwards. It is like the tree has two different ways of growing at the same time. The upward growth is like a race towards the sky, reaching for more sunlight, while the outward growth of the trunk is like adding more and more rings of protection and support.
As trees get older, they continue to grow taller and thicker. Guess how tall the world’s tallest living tree is Over 110 meters! That’s as tall as a 30-floor building! Isn’t it amazing
41. Why does the writer use the example of driving a nail into a tree in Paragraph 4
A. To explain why people put nails in trees.
B. To help readers understand how trees grow taller.
C. To show that nails don’t stop trees from growing.
D. To teach readers a way to record the growth of trees.
42. If a tree trunk gets thicker over time, what will happen to a metal ring (金屬環) put around the bottom of the trunk after 10 years
A The metal ring will go into the soil.
B. The metal ring will be higher off the ground.
C. The metal ring will move up and down along the trunk.
D. The metal ring will stay at the same height but may embed (嵌入) in the tree.
43. Which one of the pictures show the stage of germination
A. B. C. D.
44. From the article, we can find the answer to the question “________”
①How do trees get water from the soil
②Why does a nail in a tree trunk stay at the same height over time
③How many seeds does a full-grown tree drop in its lifetime
④How tall can the tallest trees in the world grow
⑤How long does a seed take to grow leaves
A. ①③④ B. ①②③ C. ②④⑤ D. ①②④
45. Which of the following best represents the structure of the passage
A. Tell stories→ List facts→ Give a warning
B. Ask questions→ Explain steps→ Share a fact
C. List problems→ Study reasons→ Offer advice
D. Share→ experiences → Show examples→ Introduce features
Lab-grown (實驗室培育) meat is made by taking a small sample of cells (細胞樣本) from a living animal. These cells are then grown in a lab and shaped into cuts of meat. The sale of this meat is OK in some countries, like the US, Singapore and Israel. Some people like it, while others are not sure. What do you think Would you eat it
Yes! Some people think it’s cruel (殘忍的) to kill animals for food, and many farmed animals are not treated well. This is not a problem for lab-grown meat. Also, the meat is safer to eat because it is made in a clean lab and has a smaller chance of harmful bacteria (細菌) spreading. What’s more, lab-grown meat is better for the environment. Farming animals causes about 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. When animals like cows eat and digest (消化) food, they release methane gas (釋放甲烷氣體). Animal waste also releases greenhouse gases when it breaks down this gases trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere and make the planet warmer. Lab-grown meat can help cut down this pollution. No! Lab-grown meat is new and not many people have eaten it yet. We don’t know what the long term influences will be. Besides, it might not be as good for the climate. As some people say, a study from the university of oxford found that, in the long run, lab-grown meat might not be better for the environment than farmed animals. This is because growing the meat on a large scale (規模) uses a lot of energy. Lastly, lab-grown meat could harm farmers. If lab-grown meat becomes very popular, many farmers may have a hard time selling their farmed animals.
In short, lab-grown meat has good and bad points. It’s good for animals and the environment. But there are still things we are not sure about. Maybe if we keep looking into it, we can solve its problems. Then it could be another everyday food that we all enjoy, doing no harm to animals or the environment.

Dear Mike,
Our school held a “Let’s Read Together!” event last Sunday to celebrate World Book Day. I took part in the Book Sharing and the Book Donation.
During the Book Sharing, I told everyone about my favorite novel and learned about interesting books from others. Then, I donated some storybooks to children who have few books to read. I chose these two activities because I love communicating with others about good books and I hope to help more people enjoy reading.
After these activities, I felt very proud and realized that reading brings warmth and knowledge to everyone.
Best regards,
Li Hua
