A few weeks ago, I pulled an old road map out of my glove box and handed it to my kids. They’d never seen the province of Ontario laid out like this before. They stared at it, asking about all the towns, parks and other landmarks we’d visited, and I pointed them out on the map.
Digital maps and GPS are modern wonders that have gotten me out of many confusing places, but paper maps still have a role to play in our lives. Most of us adults learned to read them out of necessity, but it’s up to us to pass on that skill to children whose need may not be so obvious, but who still will benefit from it.
As Trevor Muir wrote in an article on this topic, “When kids learn how to create and use paper maps, they are doing more than just learning how to get around. They are actually developing a fundamental skill that they will use for the rest of their lives. Map reading skill still belongs in today’s classroom.”
As a child, I had National Geographic maps taped to my bedroom walls. This aroused my curiosity and imagination about those places and thus made me eager to remember my geography and history lessons because they were tied to places I’d “seen”. Even now as a mother of four, I’ve also spared time to travel to many of the countries whose maps I studied as a child.
Additionally, in this fast-changing world, unexpected events can rapidly influence one’s usual way of life. When GPS satellites or Internet connections are affected, this old-fashioned skill can get you out of a mess without requiring a smartphone. Last but not least, paper maps arouse big picture thinking, showing kids that there’s a much bigger world out there and helping to direct them within it.
So, now is a good time to pull out those dusty old maps and lay them on the kitchen table.
24.How did the children react when given the paper map?
A.They seemed totally confused.
B.They showed great curiosity.
C.They found it less convenient than GPS.
D.They recognized the landmarks themselves effortlessly.
25.What benefits does the author mention regarding the use of paper maps for children?
A.They promote reliance on GPS technology. B.They provide instant convenience and accuracy.
C.They enhance curiosity and imagination. D.They get rid of the need for smartphones.
26.Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Paper maps are already out of date. B.Internet connections are always reliable.
C.GPS will sooner or later replace paper maps. D.Paper maps provide kids with a grand vision.
27.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.How to Teach Kids to Survive in the Wild B.Time to Teach Kids to Read Paper Maps
C.How to Teach Kids to Recognize Strange Places D.Time to Encourage Kids to Explore a Real World

It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and social circle, but what about that happening in the middle of the night? The Journal of Youth Studies recently published new research showing that one in five teens from 12 to 15 regularly wake to spend all night on social media. Not surprisingly, the research also showed that these social night owls were three times more likely than others to feel tired at school and that girls were more likely than boys to be called to office.
The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the brain to stay awake, so it’s easy to see why a teen might be up all night. A study in Psychological Science showed the same brain reaction: when teens saw large numbers of “likes” on their posts, they stayed awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or won money. Besides not catching up on sleep and interrupting their sleep cycle, teens may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain development and learning.
Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with some electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner rather than later.
“Providing access (使用機會) to social media is a favor that children can earn and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats sleep disorders (紊亂), reminds parents, “The bad effect is clear. So teens and parents should discuss and agree on its use, timing and access. When teenagers agree to the rules, it’s easier for parents to control how much time they use the phones or computers.”
28.What do the underlined words “night owls” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Girls often called to office.
B.Teens who stay up late on social media.
C.Teens who are busy with their homework at night.
D.Boys regularly waking in the middle of the night.
29.How do teens react when seeing many “likes” on their posts according to the study?
A.They are too excited to go to sleep. B.They fall asleep easily and happily.
C.They are too excited to go to school. D.They decide to make more good friends.
30.What suggestion does Janie Feldman give to parents?
A.Making rules about media access together with their children.
B.Getting their children to do homework through computers.
C.Encouraging their children to stay connected with online friends.
D.Stopping their children from using cell phones.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Deep sleep makes a big difference to brain development.
B.Kids are trying to win back the trust of their parents.
C.Social media may have a bad effect on all kinds of people.
D.Social media may cause teens’ sleep disorders.

We’ve all experienced it: You have important information you need to remember, and you’ll do anything it takes to keep it at the forefront of your brain. In this situation, rote memorization (死記硬背) may be your best — or even your only — option.
Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we remember it. One great example of it is the alphabet (字母表). When we are little, we don’t necessarily understand that our language is composed of the letters A to Z. But we memorize them in a specific order because we are taught to, and then we know the alphabet.
There are situations in which rote memorization can be helpful. “Rote memorization can be a useful learning tool in some situations, but its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist. He tells us that rote memorization helps us quickly recall basic facts and information such as vocabulary words or math formulas (公式). This can be particularly helpful in situations where immediate access to information is required, such as during exams or for job roles.
The act of memorizing through repetition also has its down sides. Chan notes that rote memorization often does not promote a deep understanding of the material. Learners may be able to memorize facts or information without truly understanding their meaning or significance. On the other hand, he explains that meaningful learning focuses on understanding the fundamental concepts and principles (原理), encouraging critical thinking, and promoting the integration(整合)of knowledge into broader contexts. Meaningful learning promotes long-term memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.
However, both rote memorization and meaningful learning have their place. The most important thing to remember is that they are different, and rote memorization cannot stand in as an alternative to actual learning. Memorizing something doesn’t mean you understand it, and it doesn’t mean that you can do anything with it.
32.How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A.By creating a scene. B.By giving a definition.
C.By giving an example. D.By making a comparison.
33.Why does the author mention the alphabet in Paragraph 2?
A.To instruct us how to learn the alphabet. B.To explain how rote memorization works.
C.To stress why learning in order is essential. D.To introduce the disadvantages of repetition.
34.What can we learn about rote memorization from Dr. Aldrich Chan?
A.It focuses on the concepts and principles. B.It keeps knowledge in your brain for long.
C.It helps promote a meaningful understanding. D.It is a useful learning tool for test preparation.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards rote memorization?
A.Critical. B.Unclear.
C.Objective. D.Favorable.

If you have ever had trouble persuading yourself to do things you should do or would like to do, you have experienced procrastination. If you are a typical procrastinator, perhaps you spend an excessive amount of time watching TV, playing video games, checking Facebook, eating (even when you’re not hungry), obsessively cleaning or pacing back and forth through the office. 36 Once again, you end up doing nothing. Sound familiar?
Lazy people don’t do anything and are just fine with it. 37 They truly want to fulfil their obligations (職責) but just can’t figure out how.
38 Relaxing recharges you with energy. In contrast, procrastinating drains it from you. The less energy you have, the greater the chances of you putting off your responsibilities, and, once more, you will accomplish nothing.
The studies on procrastination ever conducted indicate that failure of the ability to listen to ourselves is most likely the main reason why we put things off. The scientific name of this ability is self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to consciously control your emotions. 39 Thanks to this, you will procrastinate less. Current research indicates that willpower can be compared to a muscle. It is possible to strengthen it through training.
To overcome procrastination, you need to start by setting the bar as low as possible. Creating habits isn’t about quantity; it’s about small steps and regular repetition. By making gradual increases, once you learn a new habit, you can strengthen your willpower muscle. As you slowly raise the bar, your willpower will gain strength. 40
A.Don’t confuse procrastination with relaxation, either.
B.The more powerful it is, the easier it will be for you to make a breakthrough.
C.Learning how to develop good habits and kick bad ones can be achieved by taking small steps.
D.Procrastinators, however, have the desire to actually do something but can’t force themselves to start.
E.If you train willpower to perform one activity, you can use its strength to do other things as well.
F.Afterwards, you feel powerless and are overcome with feelings of guilt and frustration.
G.The more developed this ability is, the more often you will do what you tell yourself to do and the better you will resist temptation.

  閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” she grinned (笑), “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing (排練) almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
2.請按如下格式作答。

  Finally came the big moment.

M:Where are we now? I can’t tell what road this is.
W:We’re heading for the US, but we’re still in Canada. And we’re quite a long distance from Mexico.
(Text 2)
W:What a fine day! Shall we go hiking this early spring morning?
M:Mom won’t let us. We have to take care of little Jenny after we finish our homework.
(Text 3)
W:Dad, I want to be a nurse when I grow up.
M:A nurse? Your aunt has been a nurse for 20 years and she loves it. When your grandma wasn’t well, she knew how to take care of her.
(Text 4)
W:I need to return these books today. Do you want to come with me?
M:No. The downtown library doesn’t open on Sundays. I’d rather go tomorrow so I can check some new books for myself.
(Text 5)
W:That is a beautiful painting, Jerry! Where did you buy it?
M:Actually, I made it. I’ve been taking art classes for the past year.
W:Really? That’s amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This looks like it was painted by a professional.
(Text 6)
M:Check out my pet! He is a German shepherd.
W:Aw! He’s so cute! What’s his name?
M:I named him Luke after my favorite movie character, Luke Skywalker.
W:Great name! I am surprised you didn’t name him Harry after your favorite book character.
M:He’s really fast, and that’s why I named him Luke. If I had an older dog, I would name him Yoda.
W:How old is he?
M:Only four months old.
(Text 7)
W:Bye! Have a nice night. You won’t play loud music, will you? You know I don’t like parties in my house.
M:Oh no, Mrs White! Only Mozart, and maybe Vivaldi.
W:And of course no alcoholic drinks either!
M:No, certainly not. Only Coca-Cola.
W:Good, well, I won’t be back tonight. I’m staying with my cousin. He’s moving to Japan this Sunday. Goodbye, boys!
M:See you in the morning, Mrs White!
W:By the way, everybody must go home at 11 o’clock.
M:Oh, all right, bye.
(Text 8)
W:Professor, could you give me some suggestions about how to introduce myself before giving a speech?
M:OK. First, greet the audience and then state your name. As you say hello and give your name, remember to speak clearly and confidently.
W:Should I speak as loudly as possible?
M:Not exactly. It depends on the environment and the audience. You just need to make sure that your voice is loud enough to enable everyone to hear you.
W:Thanks. And next?
M:Share some relevant information about yourself. The sort of information you share will depend on the audience and what you’ll be talking about.
W:I understand.
M:And then, before you start the speech, thank your audience for being there.
W:Thank you very much. I have learned a lot from you.
(Text 9)
W:May I help you?
M:Yes, madam. I’d like to buy some flowers.
W:Do you want to give them to your girlfriend?
M:No, to my wife. God knows that ladies like flowers.
W:Today is Valentine’s Day. That must be why you want them. Just one day of the year.
M:Not exactly. I get them for her birthday, and for all kinds of weird anniversaries.
W:But not on April Fool’s Day, right?
M:Ha ha, right. Oh, and by the way, I want some more for my mother. Tomorrow is her birthday.
W:How about these? Purple seems popular with mothers.
M:Not with mine. Do you have any other color?
W:How about blue or these green ones? They are fresh and bright.
M:All right! I will take these green ones and go to the supermarket for some chocolate.
W:There is one just across from the bookstore. Here you are! Please come again.
M:Thanks! Bye!
(Text 10)
W:Have you all heard about the White House? Today we’re going to talk about the building that symbolizes the USA. Mr Green, please.
M:The White House is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. You can’t say you’ve been to Washington, D.C. if you haven’t seen the White House. Not every American president lives there. Though the Executive Mansion was begun in 1792 under the direction of George Washington, the structure was not completed until 1800, so ironically Washington never called it home. The White House is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am until noon. The building was torched by British troops in 1814, during the War of 1812, and the structural damage caused by the fire was repaired, but the sandstone walls outside were still black from the fire. The walls were then painted white, giving birth to the name the building now goes by. An act of Congress made it the official name in 1920. Every President has left his mark upon the White House, with Thomas Jefferson adding grass to the east and west wings, Andrew Jackson installing running water, and Harry Truman adding a porch. Bill Clinton’s addition to the White House was an indoor track.

第四部分
第一節
A Meaningful Event
With the mid-term examination drawing near, Class 5 Senior 2 held a class meeting with the theme “Stay Positive” last Monday in order to relieve students of their stress before exams.
The class meeting, composed of three sections, began with a video telling how to get rid of negative emotions. After that, free discussions were conducted in groups. Finally, some students shared their personal experiences and tips on dealing with stress, such as listening to relaxing music and doing refreshing sports.
The class meeting was a real success, which offered practical suggestions to help students fight against pressure. The students benefited a lot from it.
第二節
I was completely knocked out by the news. Then I started to pace up and down like a caged animal, debating with myself whether or not to go on stage alone. “How can this be possible?” I thought to myself. Fear and anxiety coursed through my veins, and it seemed that all our hard work was in vain. But then the thought of the support and encouragement from Emma and my mom came flooding back to me. It was at the moment that I realized that I couldn’t let
self-doubt hold me back. Filled with determination, I resolved to proceed with the performance by myself.
Finally came the big moment. As I stepped onto the stage, I could feel my heart thumping wildly in my chest. Glancing around the hall, I took a deep breath and began to sing. Surprisingly, all my worries suddenly disappeared and a wave of confidence washed over me. When I finished my song, the whole hall burst into applause. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes as Emma presented a big bunch of flowers to me, and my mum stood near, winking at us. From that day forward, I learned that by overcoming fears and self-doubts, we can make a difference.

聽力材料:
(Text 1)
M:Where are we now? I can’t tell what road this is.
W:We’re heading for the US, but we’re still in Canada. And we’re
quite a long distance from Mexico.
(Text 2)
W:What a fine day! Shall we go hiking this early spring morning?
M:Mom won’t let us. We have to take care of little Jenny after we
finish our homework.
I’d rather go
tomorrow so I can check some new books for myself.
(Text 5)
W:That is a beautiful painting, Jerry! Where did you buy it?
M:Actually, I made it. I’ve been taking art classes for the past year.
W:Really? That’s amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This
looks like it was painted by a professional.
(Text 6)
M:Check out my pet! He is a German shepherd.
W:Aw! He’s so cute! What’s his name?
M:I named him Luke after my favorite movie character, Luke
Skywalker.
W:Great name! I am surprised you didn’t name him Harry after your
favorite book character.
M:He’s really fast, and that’s why I named him Luke. If I had an
older dog, I would name him Yoda.
I’m staying with my
cousin. He’s moving to Japan this Sunday. Goodbye, boys!
M:See you in the morning, Mrs White!
W:By the way, everybody must go home at 11 o’clock.
M:Oh, all right, bye.
(Text 8)
W:Professor, could you give me some suggestions about how to
introduce myself before giving a speech?
M:OK. First, greet the audience and then state your name. As you say
hello and give your name, remember to speak clearly and confidently.
W:Should I speak as loudly as possible?
M:Not exactly. It depends on the environment and the audience. You
just need to make sure that your voice is loud enough to enable everyone to
hear you.
W:Thanks. And next?
M:Share some relevant information about yourself. The sort of
information you share will depend on the audience and what you’ll be
talking about.
W:I understand.
M:And then, before you start the speech, thank your audience for
being there.
Just
one day of the year.
M:Not exactly. I get them for her birthday, and for all kinds of weird
anniversaries.
W:But not on April Fool’s Day, right?
M:Ha ha, right. Oh, and by the way, I want some more for my
mother. Tomorrow is her birthday.
W:How about these? Purple seems popular with mothers.
M:Not with mine. Do you have any other color?
W:How about blue or these green ones? They are fresh and bright.
M:All right! I will take these green ones and go to the supermarket for
some chocolate.
W:There is one just across from the bookstore. Here you are! Please
come again.
M:Thanks! Bye!
(Text 10)
W:Have you all heard about the White House? Today we’re going to
talk about the building that symbolizes the USA. Mr Green, please.
M:The White House is one of the most recognizable structures in the
world. You can’t say you’ve been to Washington, D. C. if you
haven’t seen the White House. Not every American president lives
there. Though the Executive Mansion was begun in 1792 under the
direction of George Washington, the structure was not completed until
1800, so ironically Washington never called it home. The White House
is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am until noon.
The building was torched by British troops in 1814, during the War of
1812, and the structural damage caused by the fire was repaired, but the
sandstone walls outside were still black from the fire. The walls were then
painted white, giving birth to the name the building now goes by. An act
of Congress made it the official name in 1920. Every President has left his
mark upon the White House, with Thomas Jefferson adding grass to the
east and west wings, Andrew Jackson installing running water, and

A few weeks ago, I pulled an old road map out of my glove box and
handed it to my kids. They’d never seen the province of Ontario laid out
like this before. They stared at it, asking about all the towns, parks and
other landmarks we’d visited, and I pointed them out on the map.
Digital maps and GPS are modern wonders that have gotten me out of
many confusing places, but paper maps still have a role to play in our
lives. Most of us adults learned to read them out of necessity, but it’s
up to us to pass on that skill to children whose need may not be so
obvious, but who still will benefit from it.
As Trevor Muir wrote in an article on this topic, “When kids learn
how to create and use paper maps, they are doing more than just learning
how to get around. They are actually developing a fundamental skill that
they will use for the rest of their lives. Map reading skill still belongs in
today’s classroom.”
As a child, I had National Geographic maps taped to my bedroom
walls. This aroused my curiosity and imagination about those places and
thus made me eager to remember my geography and history lessons
because they were tied to places I’d “seen”. Even now as a mother of
four, I’ve also spared time to travel to many of the countries whose
maps I studied as a child.
Additionally, in this fast-changing world, unexpected events can
rapidly influence one’s usual way of life. When GPS satellites or Internet
connections are affected, this old-fashioned skill can get you out of a
mess without requiring a smartphone. Last but not least, paper maps
arouse big picture thinking, showing kids that there’s a much bigger
world out there and helping to direct them within it.
So, now is a good time to pull out those dusty old maps and lay
them on the kitchen table.

It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and
social circle, but what about that happening in the middle of the night?
The Journal of Youth Studies recently published new research showing that
one in five teens from 12 to 15 regularly wake to spend all night on social
media. Not surprisingly, the research also showed that these social night
owls were three times more likely than others to feel tired at school and
that girls were more likely than boys to be called to office.
The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the
brain to stay awake, so it’s easy to see why a teen might be up all
night. A study in Psychological Science showed the same brain reaction:
when teens saw large numbers of “likes” on their posts, they stayed
awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or won money.
Besides not catching up on sleep and interrupting their sleep cycle, teens
may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain
development and learning.
Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with
some electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner
rather than later.
“Providing access (使用機會) to social media is a favor that
children can earn and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats
sleep disorders (紊亂), reminds parents, “The bad effect is clear.
So teens and parents should discuss and agree on its use, timing and

D
We’ve all experienced it: You have important information you
need to remember, and you’ll do anything it takes to keep it at the
forefront of your brain. In this situation, rote memorization (死記硬
背) may be your best — or even your only — option.
Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we
remember it. One great example of it is the alphabet (字母表). When
we are little, we don’t necessarily understand that our language is
composed of the letters A to Z. But we memorize them in a specific order
because we are taught to, and then we know the alphabet.
There are situations in which rote memorization can be helpful.
“Rote memorization can be a useful learning tool in some situations, but
its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how
it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist. He tells us
that rote memorization helps us quickly recall basic facts and information
such as vocabulary words or math formulas (公式). This can be
particularly helpful in situations where immediate access to information is
required, such as during exams or for job roles.
The act of memorizing through repetition also has its down sides.
Chan notes that rote memorization often does not promote a deep
understanding of the material. Learners may be able to memorize facts or
information without truly understanding their meaning or significance. On
the other hand, he explains that meaningful learning focuses on
understanding the fundamental concepts and principles (原理),
encouraging critical thinking, and promoting the integration(整合)of
knowledge into broader contexts. Meaningful learning promotes long-term
memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.
However, both rote memorization and meaningful learning have
their place. The most important thing to remember is that they are
different, and rote memorization cannot stand in as an alternative to
actual learning. Memorizing something doesn’t mean you understand
it, and it doesn’t mean that you can do anything with it.

第二節(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)
  閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選
項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
If you have ever had trouble persuading yourself to do things you
should do or would like to do, you have experienced procrastination. If
you are a typical procrastinator, perhaps you spend an excessive amount
of time watching TV, playing video games, checking Facebook,
eating (even when you’re not hungry), obsessively cleaning or
pacing back and forth through the office. 36 Once again, you end
up doing nothing. Sound familiar?
Lazy people don’t do anything and are just fine with it. 37 They
truly want to fulfil their obligations (職責) but just can’t figure out
how.
38 Relaxing recharges you with energy. In contrast,
procrastinating drains it from you. The less energy you have, the greater
the chances of you putting off your responsibilities, and, once more,
you will accomplish nothing.
The studies on procrastination ever conducted indicate that failure of
the ability to listen to ourselves is most likely the main reason why we put
things off. The scientific name of this ability is self-regulation. Self-
regulation is the ability to consciously control your emotions. 39
Thanks to this, you will procrastinate less. Current research indicates
that willpower can be compared to a muscle. It is possible to strengthen it
through training.
To overcome procrastination, you need to start by setting the bar as
low as possible. Creating habits isn’t about quantity; it’s about small
steps and regular repetition. By making gradual increases, once you
learn a new habit, you can strengthen your willpower muscle. As you
slowly raise the bar, your willpower will gain strength. 40
A. Don’t confuse procrastination with relaxation, either.
B. The more powerful it is, the easier it will be for you to make a
breakthrough.
C. Learning how to develop good habits and kick bad ones can be
achieved by taking small steps.
D. Procrastinators, however, have the desire to actually do something
but can’t force themselves to start.
E. If you train willpower to perform one activity, you can use its strength
to do other things as well.
F. Afterwards, you feel powerless and are overcome with feelings of
guilt and frustration.
G. The more developed this ability is, the more often you will do what
you tell yourself to do and the better you will resist temptation.

第二節(滿分25分)
  閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構
成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where
my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs
my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start
to fit into the city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent
show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their
unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A
buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the
big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to
participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have
any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I
couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the
most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the
grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent
show?” she grinned (笑), “I heard you singing a tune, along the
way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t
believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity,
acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest
voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent
towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb
seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet
you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we
were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing (排練) almost every single
day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the
scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act.
But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute
stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
2. 請按如下格式作答。
I was completely shocked by the news.

  Finally came the big moment.

參考范文:
I was completely knocked out by the news. Then I started to pace up
and down like a caged animal, debating with myself whether or not to go
on stage alone. “How can this be possible?” I thought to myself. Fear
and anxiety coursed through my veins, and it seemed that all our hard
work was in vain. But then the thought of the support and encouragement
from Emma and my mom came flooding back to me. It was at the moment
that I realized that I couldn’t let self-doubt hold me back. Filled with
determination, I resolved to proceed with the performance by myself.
Finally came the big moment. As I stepped onto the stage, I could
feel my heart thumping wildly in my chest. Glancing around the hall, I
took a deep breath and began to sing. Surprisingly, all my worries
suddenly disappeared and a wave of confidence washed over me. When I
finished my song, the whole hall burst into applause. Tears of joy welled
up in my eyes as Emma presented a big bunch of flowers to me, and my
mum stood near, winking at us. From that day forward, I learned that
by overcoming fears and self-doubts, we can make a difference.
