Elizabeth Sherrill is a long time writer. For 70 years, her stories about faith, her experiences of traveling the world and dealing with depression have been a beacon (燈塔) of light for many people.Check out some of her articles and let her words affect your heart.
A Letter on Depression
My struggle with depression hasn't totally disappeared. It still surrounds me from time to time, blocking light and making it hard to smile. But the suffering no longer makes me frightened, because I keep telling myself to be positive.
An Angel Named Maria
“A baby was born here and no one knows what to do,” the doctor said into the telephone. He went on to explain that the mother had disappeared from the hospital after seeing the disabled baby.“She will not live long,” the doctor continued.“Bring us the baby,” answered Sister Marie Patrice at the other end of the line, who ran a day nursery.
Lessons from Abraham Lincoln
When I turned to leave, the picture over the door stopped me.It was a black and white photo: a tall, thin man with his hand on a table and with the saddest, most pain filled face I'd ever seen.
The letters on the frame said “Abraham Lincoln”.He won every wrestling match and told funny stories that crowds would gather to enjoy.Over time, that picture made him more important to me than ever.
A Lesson while Moving
I stood looking out the kitchen window wondering how John and I could ever leave this house. We'd lived here for 50 years.Under the maple tree was the garden where we grew tomatoes that never ripened. There was the stump (樹樁) of the cedar (雪松) we cut down to make room for our daughter's wedding reception.

Leaving India for the United Kingdom to pursue my research career, I felt more out of place than before. At work, I separated myself from the discussions, let alone putting forward my opinions. I was afraid my colleagues would see me through and realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings, just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a challenging task.
That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab urged me to contact the university's mental health services. I was advised to attend a concert by a famous singer from my motherland. There I was in the crowded concert hall, surrounded by strangers — all of us clapping and singing the familiar songs.
Soon, I planned a day trip to a charming city a few hours away. As I took pictures of the beautiful surroundings, and enjoyed a lemonade there, I realized nobody was really paying any attention to me. My confidence and self sufficiency grew as I enjoyed more local day trips. My growing self confidence carried over to work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions. I began to ask questions during departmental meetings.
So, when an important conference relevant to our research came around, I felt comfortable registering to attend on my own. Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees and industry representatives, chatting about their products. The experience inspired me to critically evaluate my own professional interests.
Since then, I have had the confidence to move to other countries, enthusiastic about new opportunities. Travelling alone did not give me any magical powers, but taught me that I have the competence to grow and succeed, just like everyone around me, and it helped me get rid of the weight of self doubt that used to hold me back.
4.How did the author feel when he first came to the United Kingdom
A.Proud. B.Depressed.

6.What can we infer about the author
A.He was not in favor of travelling alone.
B.He built up self confidence by travelling.
C.He became more interested in taking photos.
D.He began to change after a conference.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.The Road to Becoming Confident
B.The Excitement from My Research
C.Further Research in Foreign Countries
D.A Combination of Travel and Research

There are many places to go on safari (觀賞野生動物) in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting wildlife journeys.
Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.
The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face, it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.
In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate though they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.
Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip gen travel — grandparents taking fun filled vacations with grandkids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grandkids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It's not just kids gaining from travelling. Who gets the most out of this You might think it's them but it's us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grandkids may actually live longer than their peers (同齡人).
It's also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
12.Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad
A.To lead in the trend of skip gen travel.
B.To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C.To stress the importance of family ties.
D.To show the growing interest in adventure.
13.Which of the following may Annie Collins agree
A.Many parents are too strict with children.
B.Grandparents benefit more from skip gen travel.
C.Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D.Children become mature when away from parents.
14.What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip gen travel
A.They enjoy the moment to relax.
B.They feel less anxious and stressed.
C.They miss their kids very much.
D.They look forward to their own trips.
15.What does the author suggest grandparents do
A.Get kids involved in travel planning.
B.Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C.Reduce skip gen travel appropriately.
D.Make decisions in both sides' interests.

第二節(參考范文)
Gopal knew he must act fast. Then he went there and dived in, cutting through the strong waves. In a few seconds, he was next to the struggling girl.He stayed calm, but inside, his heart was beating wildly. When he was an arm's away from the girl, he carefully pulled the anxious girl onto his back. Then he found the right direction and swam with all his might toward the shore.
A big crowd of people saw Gopal carrying the little girl towards a deckchair. The little girl lay worn out on the deckchair, coughing and too frightened to cry.Her parents comforted her and turned to thank Gopal for saving the little girl.“When I got in water, I didn't really think about the consequences.” Gopal smiled with his face blushing. He felt as if he was on top of the world and a glow of happiness spread through him. With grateful tears hanging in her eyes, the little girl kept expressing her gratitude: “Thank you so much!”
