In a breathtaking incident in Berlin, a young man narrowly escaped a life threatening situation where he became trapped beneath a bus.
The 16 year old found himself unable to move beneath a tyre (輪胎) of the bus when he fell down during an attempt to catch the departing vehicle at a local stop on a Monday afternoon. The quick response of the bus driver, who immediately stopped the vehicle, coupled with the assistance of roughly 40 people, including both passengers and bystanders, led to a remarkable achievement.Together, they managed to lift the right side of the bus sufficiently to free the young man.
Frank Kurze, one of the courageous volunteers who participated in the rescue, recalled the messy scene, stating, “I saw the men trying to lift the bus, and it was clear to me that I also had to help lift the bus and try to pull the young man from underneath.”
Nearby medical professionals from a healthcare center in the Spandau neighborhood of Berlin instantly arrived at the scene to provide vital first aid.Michelle Rueckborn, one of the nurses on duty, shared their response, saying, “We were at work when we heard screams, and our coworker looked out of the window and saw what had happened, and said ‘Grab the doctor's kit and run’.”
Sandra Grunwald, another nurse present at the scene, added, “He was responsive but understandably confused, unsure of what was unfolding around him.” Despite the frightening circumstances, the young man unbelievably survived with only minor injuries, thanks to the collective effort of around 40 individuals who came together to perform a heroic rescue.

In the modern age, a significant number of people suffer with chronic (慢性的) back pain and discomfort, which not only affects their quality of life but also puts a substantial economic burden on society.
BackHug, a pioneering health tech company, has risen to the challenge of alleviating this crisis by introducing a solution that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to tackle the root causes of back pain.
AI holds the promise to revolutionize (徹底改變) healthcare, including back care. With its ability to analyse vast amounts of medical data, AI can assist in early detection and diagnosis of back issues, leading to faster and more accurate treatment. It enables the creation of personalized treatment plans, taking into account individual patient factors for improved outcomes.AI driven predictive analytics can help identify at risk individuals and take preventive measures, reducing the burden of back pain.In essence, AI is set to transform back care by offering more effective, personalized, and accessible solutions.
This technology allows users to track changes in their back tension over time, providing them with evidence of the device's therapeutic benefits after each session. This new data will be combined with other data collected on the BackHug App, notably from its in app physiotherapy questionnaire, which generates a personalized treatment programme for each user. This is where AI comes in to analyse the data and generate continuously updated personal treatment programmes on BackHug for users. As Chongsu Lee has noted, this groundbreaking solution not only addresses a pressing issue but also introduces a new data category — back tension measurement.
When it comes to back care, traditional options such as massage therapy sessions can often be a huge load. Many individuals find themselves facing large bills and waiting lists for relief from their back problems, which is why BackHug offers an accessible solution through a subscription model starting at just £89 per month. It, without doubt, has the potential to reshape the landscape of back care.

These days, James, the retired carpenter, 74, even though he suffers from a severe disease, doesn't want to go to a hospital. And he doesn't need to.The reason:James now gets his care from Mercy Virtual Care Center some 50 miles away.
Equipped with a tablet and devices such as a blood pressure monitor and scale that stream his vital signs and other data from his home to the Center, James and his doctors have been able to detect small health shifts in time to prevent a worse condition.“We can trend the data on a daily basis and intervene in many cases even before patients experience symptoms (癥狀),” says Gavin Helton, Mercy's medical director.
James and his Mercy team are pioneers in the next big thing in telemedicine, the virtual care clinic whose doctors and nurses provide the major care from miles away.Virtual care itself isn't new:For a number of years, hospitals have contracted with remote critical care specialists to monitor their ICU patients and have relied on teleconsults with specialists to provide guidance or second opinions. But Mercy Virtual takes the concept to a whole other level.
The 125,000 square foot facility has no waiting rooms, hospital beds or patients on site.Instead, it houses more than 300 medical professionals who sit in front of monitors and computer displays, watching over the care of patients at 38 hospitals. In addition to internists (內(nèi)科醫(yī)生) who observe patients at distant ICU, neurologists (神經(jīng)學(xué)家) provide guidance on stroke treatment to community hospitals.A team of virtual hospitals orders and reads tests, and nurses deal with questions about everything from nosebleeds to infections.Other clinicians, like James' doctors, stay in near continuous touch with patients at home.
The concept is working.Death rate in the ICU “is trending 40 percent less than predicted,” says Moore, Mercy Virtual's president.“By virtually monitoring ICUs 24/7, we're getting to problems earlier.” The result, he says, is that Mercy in the past year sent home 1,000 ICU patients who otherwise would have been expected to die and saved D|S40 million.
12.Why needn't James visit a hospital any more
A.He gets virtual care. B.He dislikes hospitals.
C.He has fully recovered. D.He lives too far away.
13.What is the function of the devices that James uses at home

D.To monitor his daily activities.
14.What is the main purpose of the Mercy Virtual Care Center
A.To house medical professionals.
B.To provide guidance on critical diseases.
C.To improve treatment through technology.
D.To offer medical help and observation virtually.
15.What can be the best title for the passage

How to Create a Home First Aid Kit
Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere, so having a properly stocked first aid kit in your home is an easy but essential part of good emergency preparation. Here are some useful tips for you to personalize your own first aid kit.
Pick a good container. You can buy pre filled first aid kits, and you can also buy empty first aid kit containers.___16___One good choice is a large, water resistant, flexible plastic container with either a zipper (拉鏈) closure or a lid.Lunchboxes are also another good option.
__17___When your child is crying about a wound on her knee, you don't want your home kit buried on the back of a closet.Establish a clearly defined, consistent spot for your first aid kit, on a visible closet shelf, for instance, and inform everyone in your home of its location.
Teach your family about the kit.__18___ For younger children who shouldn't try to use the items in the kit, teach them where it is located, so they could show a visitor, relative, babysitter, etc.For older children and adults, instruct them on when to retrieve (收回) the kit and how to use the various items in it.
Keep your kit up to date.No one wants to fetch a first aid kit and find the bandage box empty or the painkillers expired.__19___ You've probably heard that you should check the batteries in your smoke detectors. This would also be a good opportunity to check the status of your first aid kit and restock it as needed.
Create a checklist to include with the kit.Stock your first aid kit and record every item on a sheet of paper you can keep it in the kit.Record amounts and expiration dates next to the listed items on the checklist you include in your kit.__20__
A.Make your kit safely accessible.
B.Make your kit clearly recognizable.
C.Or you can buy a first aid kit in the store.
D.Keep track of supply amounts and expiration dates regularly.
E.Make sure anyone who retrieves the kit knows what it includes and does not include.
F.But you almost already have a perfectly good first aid kit container in your home.
G.Make sure everyone in your home knows the location of the kit and when to retrieve it.

It was a hot day.The sun scorched (炙烤) down and everywhere you looked, you could see the heat waves blowing above the sand.John rolled over, realizing that half of his body was well and truly burnt. He had not meant to sleep in the sun but the heat and late nights studying for his examinations made him miserable.Stretching, he got to his feet, picked up his surfboard and looked around. The beach, which had earlier been crowded in the sun, was now comparatively empty.Seagulls flew down to clean up the food of people's picnic lunches.
The ice cream van had gone, and so were the lifeguards who were doing first aid on the beach.John looked up to where the sun was and estimated it was about five o'clock.Time to head home.It was “Mum's Kitchen Rule” that had him moving homewards. If he did not get home in time for dinner, he would go hungry.Wandering along the water's edge, he happened to glance out to sea. What made him look up at that particular moment, he never knew, but it was the right time for the swimmer he spotted. His hand was up, signaling distress (險(xiǎn)情) and he was calling out something.
Quickly John glanced around the beach — no one else was close enough to help the man, and crucially, no one had noticed.Cupping his hands to his mouth, he shouted “Help” to get the attention of other people on the beach.Someone waved back to him and John pointed to the swimmer.“Get help,” he shouted. Then without hesitation, he jumped into the sea with his surfboard.John was a strong swimmer and had a good skill for distance swimming. His coach had tried hard to persuade him to go into competitions but he was not interested.

When I was younger, I had been a top student with a strong desire to attend a top university. But things started to go downhill for me in high school after my parents divorced.Torn between wanting to be with my mother, who moved to Canada alone with no support, and with my beloved aging grandfather in Pakistan, I moved back and forth, struggling with my studies.I barely graduated from high school and entered an ordinary college, feeling that I had already failed.
I got discouraged, and began to suffer from severe depression. The death of my grandfather was the final straw. With no real hope for the future, I dropped out and returned to my mother and sisters in Canada.
Then I was riding with a trucking company to help support my mother and sisters.During those long hours on the road, my grandfather's last words came back to me:“Please accept the challenges of life and work harder. It is now or never.I hope you will never disappoint us.” With his words ringing in my ears, I discovered a newfound resolve. My path suddenly became clear:I had to finish what I had started and go back to school.
To get back on track, I needed to take a full course load while continuing to work enough part time hours to help pay the bills. After graduating from high school again, I began university engineering cooperation program, in which I worked as a paid intern (實(shí)習(xí)生) every other term, allowing me to keep my student loans in check. At the same time, I tried my best to focus on my studies. After completing my university, I went on to a master's and now a PhD, winning several research awards along the way.
My path to this point has made one thing clear:Never fear failure.I hope I have made my grandfather proud.

Johannes Fritz, an Austrian biologist, needed to come up with a plan again if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct.
To survive the European winter, the northern bald ibis needs to migrate south for the winter over the Alps. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap.Determined to save them, he decided to teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. He was confident that he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan.
Some 400 years ago, the Europeans hunted these birds without stopping and devoured_ the last in the wild, causing the birds to disappear entirely from the wild. When Mr.Fritz was born 56 years ago, the northern bald ibis could be found in Europe only in captivity (圈養(yǎng)).
Mr.Fritz has spent his career reintroducing the birds into the wild.Through years of trial and error, he learned to fly like a bird.He modified (改裝) a lightweight aircraft so it would fly at speeds slow enough for the birds to keep up.In 2004, he led the first flock from Austria to Italy, and has since led more migrations. But the route he originally taught the ibises does not work successfully. With climate change warming the area where the birds summer, they now start their migration at the end of October instead of the end of September. The trip is expected to take about six weeks, “Still, we're optimistic that it'll work,” said Mr.Fritz.
His family and colleagues witnessed the risks he was taking.“But the unavoidable risks are necessary,” Mr.Fritz said.“It's not so much a job, but my life's purpose.”
8.What was Johannes Fritz's plan
A.To shorten bald ibises' migration route.
B.To lead bald ibises to migrate on a new route.
C.To better the climate patterns for bald ibises.
D.To find out a safer destination for bald ibises.
9.What does the underlined word “devoured” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Destroyed. B.Abused.
C.Released. D.Raised.
10.Why was Mr.Fritz's initial route for the birds ineffective
A.Owing to the long time it consumes.
B.For the slow speed of his modified aircraft.
C.Because of the toughness along the first route.
D.Due to higher temperatures in the summer habitat.
11.Which of the following can best describe Mr.Fritz
A.Honest. B.Innovative.
C.Straightforward. D.Demanding.

Solar energy is considered to be the best option for us as it belongs to the renewable category. The disappearance of the fossil fuels from the planet and their rising costs have forced countries to switch over to a sustainable (可持續(xù)的) energy source. The sun is the biggest energy supplier and is fully capable of meeting the energy needs in the distant future.
Used as an alternative to petrol, the solar power doesn't pollute the environment and delivers clean and reliable energy to the users. It doesn't give out harmful carbonic gases into the atmosphere. As a result, people can ensure electrical supply to their homes without burning coal. Moreover, the users do not have to deal with the storage issues related to fossil and nuclear fuel.Solar panels also do not make noise and send out harmful gases into the atmosphere.
As long as the sun exists in space, solar energy can be generated for free.It is a game changer as far as ensuring energy security. With rising electricity bills in the household, people are increasingly fixing solar panels on their rooftops to supplement the production of electricity. It will help them to reduce the energy expenditure (消費(fèi)) to a great extent.Solar energy can provide power in places with remote accessibility. The only problem of the solar panel is that it might not work well during a cloudy or rainy day.
Advancement in technology has helped to lower the maintenance of the solar panels. In order to increase power, more such devices can be added to the system.Usage of solar energy has resolved the problems of many homeowners. The cost of the solar panel might seem to be more. However, it can easily be recovered after 10 years.
12.Why do countries switch over to renewable energy according to the first paragraph
A.Renewable energy will soon replace traditional energy.
B.The traditional energy is becoming hard to get.
C.Most renewable energy is environment friendly.
D.They want to apply new technology to everyday use.
13.What does the underlined word “supplement” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Speed. B.Simplify.
C.Highlight. D.Add.
14.Which is mentioned as a disadvantage of solar energy in the text
A.It depends too much on the weather.
B.It isn't easily accessible to remote places.
C.Some key technique problems remain to be solved.
D.The maintenance of the solar panels is still expensive.
15.What can be the best title for the text
A.The cost of solar energy
B.Solar energy — good or bad
C.Solar energy — your best choice
D.The potential application of solar energy

第一節(jié)(參考范文)
First Aid Course Matters
When it comes to the first aid course, I hold the view that it is a must for students to be offered some related knowledge.
First aid is a science of giving medical care to a person before a doctor can be found. If quickly and correctly given, it can save a person's life. However, only those with the right knowledge can perform first aid, so I suggest that our school should provide specific instructions on how to treat drowning, bleeding, choking, burns, cuts and traffic accidents.More importantly, involvement with the community is encouraged, which offers opportunities for students to apply their skills through volunteering or community events.
I'm convinced that the course will be well received.
第二節(jié)(參考范文)
Now he was swimming for more than enjoyment or medals. He was swimming to save someone's life.He swam very fast.“I must be close to him now,” he thought. Then he heard the man cry anxiously.“Help me, and I'm hurt.” As John reached him, he started to reassure him, “It's OK, mister.I'll get you to the shore.” “Easier said than done,” John thought to himself.“This man's big.” He helped the man get on his board.
Fortunately, the sea was not rough and there was no wave. As John reached the shallow water, willing hands appeared to help carry the man the shore.John sat down and began to recover his breath.A small crowd gathered around the swimmer.“They must know what to do,” John thought with relief, reaching for his board and standing up.He figured that since no one needed him, he had better go home before he missed out on his dinner. No one noticed him leave.
