However, after we had been stuck in traffic for more than four hours, one of my sisters proposed going back to the city as a last attempt to save whatever remained of the day. A quick online search revealed other must visit spots around Shillong. Most were familiar, but one caught our attention — Nartiang with its mysterious monoliths (獨石碑). The photo showed tall stones piled together in a strange formation, appealing to us to explore further despite the lack of details provided. That is how I found myself standing in the shadow of the huge monoliths of Nartiang, which is home to the thickest and largest collection in the region. Curious to uncover their history, I approached Maryo Symblai, a village elder I met later that day, who told me the story of the monoliths that has been orally passed down over generations. She said, “Back in the day, Nartiang didn't have a bazaar (集市) and the nearest one was at Raliang. On one such bazaar, a giant named Mar Phalyngki was caught in heavy rain on his way back. He requested to borrow an umbrella from the Raliang chief's youngest daughter, but she wanted to test his legendary strength instead. ‘Why don't you go to lift that huge stone in the bazaar and use it as an umbrella?’ she said impolitely. Emboldened by her challenge, he just did that, but before reaching Nartiang, he placed it in a forest when the rain had stopped.”“There is a certain overlap of ancient story and memory in the case of the Nartiang monoliths. The locals' account of how the place came to be is based on ancient stories or folk customs. But they also remember it because it served their ancestors as a weekly marketplace, a memorial, and a place for political gatherings. That is how oral history works. It mixes fact and fiction into collective memory,” said Dr Reeju Ray, a local writer.Today, even though the traditional customs and more confirmed historical accounts offer some insight into the site, the mystery (奧秘) of the stone giants lasts.4.Why did the author and his family come to visit the monoliths of Nartiang A.It was in their original trip plan.B.They had to choose it as an alternative.C.It was the only remaining place to visit.D.An elder villager gave them the suggestion.5.What does the underlined word “Emboldened” in paragraph 2 mean A.Threatened. B.Moved.C.Stimulated. D.Frightened.6.Why are Dr Reeju Ray's words mentioned A.To inform what the monoliths served as.B.To illustrate how the mysterious story came into being.C.To introduce the feature of Nartiang monoliths.D.To deny the overlap of ancient story and memory.7.What is the best title for the text A.A Trip to the MonolithsB.The Mystery of ShillongC.The Formation of the MonolithsD.A Disappointing Travel ExperienceCA lot of manufactured glass today made from sand and sodium carbonate (碳酸鈉) can be reused or melted down and recycled into new items, but it doesn't break down in the environment and will sit in landfills for thousands of years. A team of Chinese scientists aimed to deal with this environmental concern by developing an eco conscious alternative. In a study published recently in the journal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Process Engineering described how they engineered biodegradable glass made from amino acids (氨基酸). That glass would have a smaller impact on the environment and can break down in a few weeks or in several months. In a test, glass beads (珠) made out of amino acids were placed under the skin of mice, and the breakdown of the beads and the skin healing process were observed for 30 days. A diagram from the study shows how the mice's bodies broke down the beads. In that month, the glass implant degraded beneath the skin, the wound site healed, and fur grew back. “Throughout the experimental period, no mice exhibited any pain related behavior that may have been caused by the glass implantation, and none of them experienced obvious weight loss,” the researchers wrote in their paper.Although amino acids do degrade over time in the environment, this biodegradable glass is not as durable as traditional glass, because amino acids can break down quickly in heat. In order to overcome this hurdle,_the researchers chemically modified the amino acids using the heating cooling procedure applied in glass manufacturing. This is when materials for the glass are heated to become soft and then rapidly cooled so as to make the glass tougher.“It's important to point out that this biodegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far from large scale commercialization,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a professor involved in the study, in a press release.8.What is an advantage of the new glass A.It can be recycled at a low cost.B.It is produced without pollution.C.It takes less time to break down.D.It has a wide range of applications.9.Why did researchers implant glass beads inside mice A.To assess whether the glass is biologically harmless.B.To investigate why amino acids are medically useful.C.To explore how long it takes for the glass to degrade.D.To observe if the glass can be melt down in mice's stomach.10.What does the underlined word “hurdle” in paragraph 4 refer to A.The instability of amino acids.B.The difficulty of selecting materials for the glass.C.Environmental problems caused by traditional glass.D.The challenge of improving the heating cooling procedure.11.What is the attitude of Yan Xuehai towards the new glass's launch on the market A.Optimistic. B.Critical.C.Indifferent. D.Uncertain.DThinking of getting your child to take up a sport that involves (牽涉) a coach or instructor Good news: A new study finds that children who take part in organized physical activity at a young age are less likely to have emotional difficulties by the time they turn 12.“The elementary school years are a key time in child development,” said Frederic N. Brier, a psycho education professor who led the study, published this month in Pediatric Research. “And every parent wants to raise a well adjusted child.”Researchers followed a birth group over time to examine whether continual participation in organized sport from 6 to 10 would lower risks related with emotional distress(情緒困擾), anxiety, shyness, social pullback at the age of 12. Their goal was to test this question as critically as possible by eliminating (排除) pre existing child or family conditions that could offer an alternative explanation. To do this, Brier and his team examined data from a group of children born in 1997 or 1998 who are part of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. From age 6 to 10, mothers reported whether their children participated in organized physical activity. At the age of 12, teachers reported on the children's levels of emotional distress, anxiety, shyness, and social pullback at school.“The results revealed that children who participated frequently from 6 to 10 showed fewer instances of those factors at the age of 12 than their peers who did not join in physical activity in a continual way,” said Brier. “We found these benefits above and beyond pre existing individual and family characteristics.”“Getting kids actively involved in organized sport seems to promote global development. This involvement appears to be good on a socio emotional level and not just because of physical benefits. Being less emotionally distressed at the key stage between elementary and high school is a priceless benefit for children, as they are about to enter a much larger universe with bigger academic challenges. This research supports current parental guidelines promoting children's involvement in physical activity,” Brier concluded.12.Why did Brier's team follow a birth group over time A.To check their health.B.To test their guess.C.To learn about their study.D.To find out suitable sports.13.How did the researchers reach their conclusion A.By analyzing data.B.By doing survey on teachers.C.By doing experiments.D.By organizing physical activities.14.What does Brier think of the results A.They are of little value.B.They need further testing.C.They are against their guess.D.They are up to his expectation.15.What can be a suitable title for the text A.It's easy to raise a well adjusted childB.Organized sport promotes emotional difficultiesC.School education is critical for child developmentD.Sticking to organized sport can help kids adjust第二節(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。Imagine taking a voyage to the deepest part of the ocean.
