You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (來源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (說明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (傾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
16.What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for
A.Beautifying the city he lives in. B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste. D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
17.Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3
A.To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.
D.To find a substitute for them.
18.What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers
A.Calming. B.Disturbing.
C.Refreshing. D.Challenging.
19.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Artists’ Opinions on Plastic Safety
B.Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C.Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D.Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures

If one of our merchandisers has a question or wants to make a correction, they e-mail the entire department. In my opinion, this is rude and unnecessary. It seems to me that mass e-mail is appropriate for good or neutral news, rather than making a correction. Do you agree Moreover, if you were the recipient of the correction, how would you respond The only people who should be included in an e-mail are those who need to know or respond. Including everyone is rude and unprofessional as well as annoying to recipients. It’s not like we don’t have enough in our inbox already. I don’t agree that e-mail is only for good or neutral news, however. Sometimes you need to alert people or create a record of bad news. But no one should use e-mail to blame other people. If you’ve got a problem with someone, pick up the phone or take it outside (for a coffee, not a fist fight…geez). As for how to respond, e-mail is usually ineffective for resolving conflict. Have a conversation with the sender and explain why his or her approach isn’t the best and what you recommend.
Letter 2 January 14, 2018 | 9:24 pm It’s the start of a new year and I believe it’s time for a change. What’s the best way to explain to a prospective employer that you are in need of something new without seeming flighty and without complaining about your current employer The new year is as good a time as any to take stock, but not the only reason for making a change. At least, that’s not what you communicate to a prospective employer. Your reason for looking for a new job is less important to your new employer than why you want to work there. Needing a change might be the catalyst(催化劑), but the job search is like dating, and you wouldn’t ask someone out and explain you’re just bored in your current relationship, right At least I hope not, otherwise you’re likely to be as lonely as Barry Manilow sounds when he sings “It’s Just Another New Year’s Eve”.
20.What is discussed in the first letter
A.How to ask questions in a polite way. B.How to respond to a false charge.
C.How to make a correction at work. D.How to handle rude mass emails at work.

The southwestern United States has experienced drought for more than 20 years. Arizona has increasingly pumped (抽吸) water from underground, but that meets less than half of what the state needs. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of new residents arrive every year, and more communities are built. One report shows that a large area near Phoenix doesn’t have enough groundwater for all the homes that developers want to build there. That means 800,000 people.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (脫鹽) plant on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. The plant would remove salt from the water and pump that water to Arizona through a 200-mile pipeline. Supporters say this could provide a water supply for decades.
Environmentalists see a different future. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process uses lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases, the very gases that are causing the conditions that have led to Arizona’s water problems.
Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to show much more unsustainable development in the desert in the future. Moreover, desalinating water would likely be a massive expenditure for Arizonans. Cities pay about $50 to $150 for 326,000 gallons. That’s enough for a family of three in Phoenix for a year. Desalinated water could charge 20 times as much.
Environmentalists say the government should focus on cutting the demand for water rather than increasing the supply. That would mean taking water-saving measures and limiting how many homes are built. Thousands of households in Tucson, Arizona, are collecting rainwater and using it for cooking, drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
26.What is the problem faced by the southwestern United States
A.A population increase. B.A serious heatwave.
C.A waste of resources. D.A water shortage.
27.What do environmentalists probably think of the desalination project
A.It provides a long-term solution to drought.
B.It would harm the planet from various aspects.
C.It fails to take people’s basic needs into account.
D.It draws people’s attention to environmental destruction.
28.What does the underlined part “a massive expenditure” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Affordable. B.Costly. C.Unsafe. D.Beneficial.
29.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.People are unsatisfied with the government’s water measures.
B.Collecting rainwater is the key to meeting water demands.
C.People are exploring water resources with official support.
D.Public concern about water safety has increased.
The effects of working while attending school or college
Youths working while in school or college seems like a tradition in many countries and the trend is growing. A recent study has found that 80% of students in some countries have at least a part time job during their study years.
Why do students look for employment 30 Education costs are high, and college tuitions have grown considerably during the last few years. Moreover, parents also contribute less toward covering the education costs of their children, which means students must earn their own money while studying.
Having a job during school or college years affects the students’ personal and academic lives. First of all, employed students have less free time and, as a result, they can’t be around their family or friends as often as they would want. They lack sleep and are more stressed, and they may even develop health problems. Furthermore, student employment also impacts academic performance. A new research shows that students working more than 20 hours a week have lower grades than those who work less or not at all. 31
However, the benefits of student employment are also notable. It seems that employed students tend to be more engaged in academic activities than those who do not work, probably because they have developed a higher sense of responsibility.
32 Firstly, fresh graduates who already have work experience gained during their study years have better chances of landing a job. Employers usually prefer to hire a graduate with workplace experience, because they needn’t spend too much time and resources to train the new employee. Secondly, studies show that working learners are more likely to move into a managerial position soon after graduating. 33 As they try different jobs during their school years, they are more aware of their job preferences and target field, and thus far less confused than fresh graduates who have never worked.
To sum up, because of financial difficulties, many youths look for employment while attending school or college, and this can have positive or negative effects on their lives.
34 In this way, employed students can gain noteworthy advantages in terms of career path after they graduate.
A.The main cause is financial pressure.
B.Student employment has an effect on future careers as well.
C.The government has increased funding for higher education.
D.They state that the job limits the number of classes they can take.
E.Employed students know what type of work field would be best fit for them.
F.Finally, employed students develop a better appreciation of the career path to pursue.
G.So guidance should be given to help them keep a proper balance between study and work.

【答案】16.C 17.A 18.B 19.D
根據第一段“He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(他用塑料垃圾建造巨大的雕塑,迫使觀眾重新審視他們與一次性塑料產品的關系)”可知,Von Wong用塑料垃圾制作雕塑,是想讓人們重新審視與一次性塑料制品的關系,引起公眾對塑料垃圾的關注。故選C項。
根據第三段“Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (來源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. (全球只有9%的塑料垃圾被回收。塑料吸管絕不是最大的塑料污染源,但它們最近卻受到了抨擊,因為大多數人不需要吸管喝飲料,而且由于它們體積小、重量輕,無法回收利用)”可知,塑料吸管體積小、重量輕,無法回收利用。由此推知,作者在第三段討論塑料吸管是為了展示它們回收的難度。故選A項。
根據倒數第二段“In a piece form 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (說明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (傾倒) from a truck all at once.(在2018年的一個作品中,Von Wong想要說明一個具體的統計數字:每60秒,就有一卡車塑料進入海洋。
根據第一段“But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(但一根塑料吸管或一個塑料杯真的有什么區別嗎?
根據文體特點可知本文是針對來信反映的問題給出建議,根據Letter 1中的“If one of our merchandisers has a question or wants to make a correction, they e-mail the entire department. In my opinion, this is rude and unnecessary.”可知,第一封反映的問題是如果一個業務員有問題或有需要改正的地方,他工作的單位會給整個部門發電子郵件,在他看來,這是粗魯和不必要的,再結合回復中的 “I don’t agree that e-mail is only for good or neutral news, however. Have a conversation with the sender and explain why his or her approach isn’t the best and what you recommend.”
根據Letter 2中的 “but the job search is like dating, and you wouldn’t ask someone out and explain you’re just bored in your current relationship, right ”可知,格雷格認為找工作就像約會,你不會約別人出去解釋你對現在的關系感到無聊,對吧?
根據Letter 1中的“If one of our merchandisers has a question or wants to make a correction, they e-mail the entire department. In my opinion, this is rude and unnecessary.”可知,第一封信給出了如何處理工作中粗魯的群發郵件的建議,根據Letter 2中的“What’s the best way to explain to a prospective employer that you are in need of something new without seeming flighty and without complaining about your current employer ”可知,第二封信給出的是換工作時怎樣向新老板解釋你換工作的原因而又不顯得輕浮和不抱怨現在的老板的建議,這兩封信反映的都是工作中的問題,因此go to greg向人們提供如何處理工作中的問題的建議,故C項正確。
【點睛】本篇第3題推理判斷題難度較大,抓住兩封信所反映的問題是關鍵,根據Letter 1中的“If one of our merchandisers has a question or wants to make a correction, they e-mail the entire department. In my opinion, this is rude and unnecessary.”可知,第一封信給出了如何處理工作中粗魯的群發郵件的建議,根據Letter 2中的“What’s the best way to explain to a prospective employer that you are in need of something new without seeming flighty and without complaining about your current employer ”可知,第二封信給出的是換工作時怎樣向新老板解釋你換工作的原因而又不顯得輕浮和不抱怨現在的老板的建議,這兩封信反映的都是工作中的問題,因此go to greg向人們提供如何處理工作中的問題的建議。

After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.
That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher”. I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.
There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet — no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace (火爐) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down.
What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!
In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food.We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.
I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone.

[河北定州2021高一期中]Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are an integral part of sea life and sustain itself by providing shelter and habitat to various organisms. They also supply and recycle nutrients as well as enable a growing fish population, along with other species for a healthy and diverse ecosystem. However, the rise in average water temperatures due to climate change has resulted in more frequent and long time coral bleaching (白化) events that damage their health, causing fish and other sea species to abandon them.
In order to restore this delicate ecosystem, scientists from the UK and Australia conducted a study that involved using loudspeakers underwater near damaged coral reefs to make them sound healthy and attract fish, potentially kick starting the natural recovery process of coral reefs and their dependent life forms. The location for this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea, found alongside the east coast of Queensland, Australia. The site is noted for having the largest coral reef system in the world.
“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places—the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoops and grunts of fish.Young fish concentrate on these sounds when they're looking for a place to settle,” said Steve Simpson, one of the study's co authors and a professor at the University of Exeter, UK.
By using loudspeakers to copy such sounds, parts of dead coral reefs were found to attract twice as many fish, compared to places where no sounds were played.“These returning fish are crucial to coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems.Boosting fish populations in this way could help to kick start natural recovery processes, preventing the damage we're seeing on many coral reefs around the world,” said lead author, Tim Gordon.
23.What causes the phenomenon of coral bleaching
A.Diverse species. B.Noise pollution.
C.Fishing industry. D.Climbing temperatures.
24.What approach is introduced to recover the coral reefs
A.Removing damaged coral reefs. B.Using loudspeakers to keep fish away.
C.Building new homes for sea species. D.Playing certain sounds to appeal to fish.
25.Why are Steve Simpson's words quoted
A.To provide some findings of the study.
B.To show the progress of the experiment.
C.To explain reasons for the new approach.
D.To give another solution to the problem.
26.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The attempts are in vain.
B.Natural recovery is impossible.
C.Initial success has been achieved.
D.The coral reefs have returned to normal.
In the 1950s,a family who owned a farm near Beulah,Michigan kept a bull chained to an elm(榆樹).The bull paced around the tree, dragging the heavy iron chain, which led to a groove(槽)in the bark. The groove deepened over the years, though for whatever reason,it did not kill the tree.
After some years, the family took their bull away. They cut the chain, leaving the loop(圈)around the tree and one link hanging down.
Then one year, agricultural disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch Elm Disease. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm became infected and died.Everyone thought that the old elm would be next.
The farm's owners considered doing the safe thing:pulling it out and cutting it up into firewood before it died. But they simply could not bring themselves to do it.It was as if the old tree had become a family friend. So they decided to let nature take its course.
Amazingly, the tree did not die.Nobody could understand why it was the only elm that was still standing in the country!
Plant pathologists(病理學家)from Michigan State University came out to observe the tree. They observed the scar left by the iron chain, now almost completely covered by bark. The plant experts decided that it was the chain that saved the elm's life. They reasoned that the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune to the fungus(真菌).
It's said that what doesn't kill you will make you stronger.Or,as Ernest Hemingway put it,“Life breaks us all,but afterwards, many of us are strongest at the broken places.”
27.What happened to the elms in Michigan during the agricultural disaster
A.Nearly all of the elms died of a disease.

27.
根據文章第三段中“All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm became infected and died.”(通往農場的道路上的所有榆樹都被感染并死亡。) 故選A項。

30.
根據文章最后一段中“what doesn't kill you will make you stronger.”(“不會殺死你的東西會使你變得更堅強。)和“Life breaks us all,but afterwards, many of us are strongest at the broken places.”(生活使我們破碎,但此后,我們中的許多人在破碎的地方變堅強。)是全文的升華,作者以老榆樹的故事告訴人們,生活中的磨難并不可怕,它會使我們更堅強。所以C項“經歷磨難后更堅強”最適合做文章的標題。故選C項。

In Colonial days, farm families worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer. People had little time for play. They did not have a chance to see other people as much as we do today. But sometimes they were able to turn hard work into good times and still visit with their neighbours.
In Virginia, Indian corn was an important crop. In late autumn after the weather had turned cold, the corn was ready to be harvested. Each ear had a cover of leaves called the husk (殼). The colonists pulled ears of corn from the dry stalks and stored the ears of corn. Later, they held a corn husking party.
On a clear night in November, neighbouring families gathered to husk (剝去……的殼) the corn. They lit lanterns in a barn and piled the corn in high mounds(垛) on the floor. Then everyone went to work.
Most of the corn was yellow or white. But from time to time, a red ear was found. The person who found it was supposed to have good luck.
As people worked together, they enjoyed each other’s company. There was cider to drink and cakes and cookies to eat. Corn husking was a favourite with boys and girls because they liked the chance to have a party.

A lot of people ask this question:“Why is body language so important?” Studies have shown that in the process of communication,non-verbal expression has 65% to 93% more influence than actual text. This means that “how to say” is more important than “what to say”.Of course, this does not mean that you don’t need to do preparation for your interviews, nor does it mean that you can take any short cuts.On the contrary, this means that you have more things to pay attention to and prepare for.
In the real workplace, body language is much more important than you think.Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you can’t integrate with the external environment, not to mention the difficulties in the absence of body language in the workplace.
“People can often make inferences from actions, and the results of these inferences directly affect lives:for example, who will be employed and who will be promoted,” Academician Amy Cuddy said in a TV talk show. She also said that “our body language will also affect our perception(感知,看法) of ourselves. When you try to make more authoritative(權威的) actions, your brain will inadvertently(不經意地)receive signals and actually create an idea that you are more authoritative,so that you have more confidence in yourself”.
Therefore, before interviews or important meetings, try not to lean on any object or have a hunched back.Instead, you should try to keep your body relaxed. You can even stand with a relatively authoritative posture(姿勢) of course, you may need to do these things in the bathroom or places where no one could see you.
Body language plays a crucial role in your job interviews, careers, and everyday life.Paying attention to body language could make strong impacts on your behavior, which could help you achieve better results. So,every time you are nervous or feel that you can’t do it,stretch your body, smile, and tell yourself, “Fake it till you become it!”

Contrary to popular belief, looking at someone’s face alone is not enough to tell us whether they are shouting in celebration or screaming in frustration, researchers claimed. While people may believe they have the ability to read each other’s faces, body language is the real clue that shows whether the strong emotions someone is feeling are positive or negative.
In one study, groups of participants were shown a series of facial expressions such as tennis players photographed just after winning or losing a point.
In some cases the volunteers were able to see the player’s full body, but in others they were only shown either their face or their body with the other removed.
Participants could clearly tell whether the players were winning or losing when shown the full picture or just the body, but their guesses were no better than chance when based on the face alone.
Those who were allowed to see the full image were convinced that they had made their judgment based on the players’ facial expressions even though results from the two other groups suggested otherwise.
The researchers carried out a second study where volunteers were shown a wider range of faces showing emotions including joy, pleasure, victory, pain and defeat.
Using photo editing software, the researchers attached the faces to bodies expressing the opposite emotions and asked participants to act out the emotions they saw in the photos.
The resulting poses(姿勢) were like the body poses in the photographs but not the facial expressions, which means that people base their understanding of strong emotions on the body instead of the face.
Dr Aviezer, who led the study, said,“These results show that when emotions become extremely intense, the difference between positive and negative facial expressions becomes unclear. The results may help researchers understand how the body interacts during emotional situations.”
27.Nowadays,what do most people tend to believe
A. Someone’s body language has an effect on his feeling.
B.Reading someone’s face alone cannot tell us his feeling.
C.Someone’s body language is the only clue to his feeling.

Live-stream marketing: A rural rags-to-riches story
For many years, quality agricultural products were unable to sell in faraway provinces. 1 It prevented them from accessing a wider, urban client. In most cases, because farmers failed to directly reach consumers, their heavy physical labor resulted in very little income. In this regard,live-stream marketing may appeal to young migrant workers and convince them to return home in the countryside. 2
In Yunnan Province, southwest China,live-stream marketing is currently the most popular way of pushing local products to consumers across the country. 3 It is turning the smartphone into a new farming tool by fashioning new shopping centers. Live-streaming has greatly boosted the province’s produce sales in the past two years. We now have a great business model in place, combining products with high-quality live stream platforms and support packages from the government. 4 Anyway, the continuous development of live-stream marketing is ready to play a big role in raising rural incomes in relatively backward provinces like Yunnan. E-commerce live-streaming is doing pretty well nowadays, but farm produce only accounts for a small share, mainly due to the lack of experienced hosts and infrastructure in rural areas.
5 How to grow live stream marketing for farm products Short videos or live-streams,the key is to meet consumers’ demand. High-quality products alone aren’t enough;they must consider buyers’ preferences as well.
A.There arises a question.
B.Policies should be made to protect the environment.
C.The expansion of 5G technology is a vital contribution.
D.The biggest barrier is lack of efficient marketing channels.
E.More primary schools should be built in the rural areas.
F.But we should establish a complete supply chain based on strict standards.
G.Once back home they can introduce digitally advanced approaches to agricultural management.

To achieve success, I will first set clear, specific, and achievable goals. These goals will act as my guiding stars. Then, I will work hard with great determination.

I’m now at a special university where 46 speech and hearing impaired (受損) students graduate each year. Every morning, I made it a practice of setting the intention (意圖) in my heart of “May I be a tool for them to get what they need right now ”.
Today, one girl came and sat down. I started with how we usually do. She can speak but cannot hear and lip-read. I asked one question, and she went on for 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil I understood a couple of words here and there, so I understood that she was not saying anything connected with what I asked. I just kept on listening to her without speaking a word. This went on for an hour and a half! Then, after a long pause, I told her to get back on track with another question. And then she shared for another half an hour straight! The whole time I was just looking in her eyes which would go here and there but come back to me. In the end, I just got up and hugged her and she was smiling wider.
Then I invited her to have juice with me. She said yes. What put me in a state of fear was realizing, just a few minutes later, that treating my new friend to some juice was the first celebration of my very first salary! A month ago, I started my first job, and what a blessing to have this important moment in my life be rooted in generosity.

27.What causes the phenomenon of coral bleaching
A.Diverse species. B.Noise pollution.
C.Fishing industry. D.Climbing temperatures.
28.What approach is introduced to recover the coral reefs
A.Removing damaged coral reefs. B.Using loudspeakers to keep fish away.
C.Building new homes for sea species. D.Playing certain sounds to appeal to fish.
29.Why are Steve Simpson's words quoted
A.To provide some findings of the study.
B.To show the progress of the experiment.
C.To explain reasons for the new approach.
D.To give another solution to the problem.
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The attempts are in vain.
B.Natural recovery is impossible.
C.Initial success has been achieved.
D.The coral reefs have returned to normal.

It’s hard to believe that I am so close to reaching the end of high school. Looking back, I find the past days has witnessed plenty of memorable activities. However, the one that stuck me as the most impressive was the coming-of-age ceremony.
To honor the students who had turned 18, a grand ceremony was held in the 2nd term of the senior year. We students, wearing traditional dress, gathered at the stadium as scheduled. First, our principal sincerely extended her congratulations on us becoming a grown-up. Then followed the Confucian-style coming-of-age ceremonies-Ji Li (for girls) and Guan Li (for boys). Finally, we made a solemn vow to shoulder the responsibilities of an adult, which was definitely the highlight.
Personally, the ceremony exerted a profound influence on us students. Not only did it fully expose us to traditional Chinese culture, but it motivated us to embrace the new identity and live up to our promise.

More than any other aspect of the climate crisis, it is the over-production of carbon dioxide that has been valued. But nitrogen, and its 1 use in commercial fertilizer, also leads to air pollution and climate change. Evidence suggests their use also contributes to air pollution, increases the rates of cancer and 2 biodiversity, as well as releasing gas (laughing gas).
But nitrogen helps 3 around half the world’s population and remains essential for the foreseeable future. With prices of fertilizer rising, many developing countries don’t 4 it, with resulting threats to food security. The global nitrogen 5 involves both reducing fertilizer use, and getting it to where it’s needed most.
A team of scientists has come up with a five-step plan to solve this 6 problem. Benjamin Houlton, the leader, explains that only by undertaking a 7 approach and combining solutions can the problem be solved on both levels.
The five steps identified involve 8 agricultural practices, getting fertilizer to the places it’s needed, reducing nitrogen pollution and finally, both reducing food waste and promoting a change in diet. The 9 two are essential because approximately one-quarter of all global food produced is wasted along the 10 chain, which means that a large portion of the nitrogen fertilizer 11 to crops is ultimately wasted.
Benjamin admits that adding nitrogen to the list of existing climate woes might cause a sense of exhaustion. 12 he has an encouraging message. “The truth is, nitrogen is a blessing and a 13 ,” he says, “But if you can reduce the spill-overs of nitrogen, you can quickly get systems to return to the 14 state. That makes it very different from CO2. We lock in 30 to 50 years of climate impacts every time we send out a molecule of CO2 into the air. But with nitrogen you can get 15 returns on investment.”

Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木叢) in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(樹冠層) of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.
They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity(濕氣) of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.

C.For self-protection. D.For the detection of insects.
19. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Life-Giving Rainforests B.The Law of the Jungle

People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their body language conveys a positive message.Practice these gestures and movements to project an airport confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested.Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious.Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace can make a difference;slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however,is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while moving more slowly.Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched(耷拉的) posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking?Instead, keeping your head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence,so offer a firm hand when meeting others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less.Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.

As the climate continues to get warmer, the glaciers (冰川) are melting and the sea levels are rising. As it affects the land, mountains are taller than before. How does this happen
Scientists studied the last ice age, which occurred 16,000 years ago when much of Earth’s Northern Hemisphere was covered in ice. Although the ice melted long ago, Earth’s crust (地殼) is still rising and sinking in reaction to its previous ice age burden. This movement is called glacial isostatic adjustment
Scientists believe that an ice sheet about 800 meters thick could cause a depression (洼地) about 275 meters deep, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. “As the ice sheets began to melt around 11,700 years ago, the glaciers cleared large and heavy masses, allowing the mountains to rise up,” US geologist Mike Kaplan told the Columbia Climate Scehool website.
Recent studies suggest that land in southeast Alaska is rising at a rate of about 3centimeters per year. Families living on the coast welcome this “new” land, according to The New York Times. However, they soon find themselves in a trap. As the land uplifts and coastal areas move away from the sea, rivers can dry up more easily, making it harder for them to reach the sea. This could result in a reduction in water resources, affecting animals and creatures living in the rivers. Researchers are concerned that this may make a challenge to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.
While the depression of Earth’s crust springs back slowly, once uplifted areas are sinking. For example, a 2015 study suggests that the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the US could sink more than 15 centimeters by 2100. This sinking trend also suggests that these areas may experience more significant impacts from a rise in sea levels.
23.What can we learn about glacial isostatie adjustment
A.It mainly happened during the last ice age.
B.It causes the ice sheets to melt.
C.It becomes a burden of the earth.
D.It affects the land’s height above sea level.

Modern research on body language—often called nonverbal behavior—began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired in part by Charles Darwin’s study The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals(1872).But it had received little attention for around a century, according to nonverbal communication expert David Matsumoto.
Then modern researchers examined how the brain reacts to facial expressions and how babies copy facial and hand gestures. And scientists have also realized the complexity(復雜性) of body language.
Much research has suggested that body language is often hard to interpret or understand. But for years some advisers and experts have been using their knowledge in many practical areas.
“I help people influence and persuade others around, how trustworthy and credible their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication,” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of Winning Body Language,a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up,as well as those gestures.
Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions.Joe Navarro is the author of What Every Body Is Saying. It is a book about reading a person’s mind from their nonverbal behavior.“It’s easy to spot a speaker’s lip movements when he faces a question he doesn’t like,” Joe said.
While the work of these experts attracts large audiences, many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable.“Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states,” David Matsumoto said.So do some body movements.“But people do all kinds of things with their bodies,” he said.Your raised eyebrow(眉毛) could express doubt—but it might also signal discomfort or surprise.“The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures,” he said.
27.What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1
A.It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B.It promoted the development of human language.
C.It helped start modern research on body language.
D.It encouraged people to care more about animals.
28.What can we infer about Mark Bowden
A.He gives advice on business language.
B.He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
C.He pays more attention to spoken language.
D.He teaches people about body language.
29.What did David Matsumoto think of Joe Navarro’s methods

Nature is the best laboratory for learning about nature. For ten years, every student at Wadsworth Middle School has been looking forward to his or her turn to attend a three-day science camp. 31 Science camp is important to the students, and we must raise the money necessary to save it.
Without science camp, students will miss out on a unique learning experience. In science class, they learn to identify rocks by picking them up out of a box. 32 Science camp also lets students experiment with different forms of energy. For example, students get to build miniature (微型的) steam engines that are powered by campfires. They also make solar panels that heat camp water. These experiences would be tough to create in a classroom.
Science camp is for everybody, and it won’t be saved unless everybody helps raise money for it. To get started, Principal Jeffries and the student council could set up a “science camp fund (資金)” at a local bank. Every year, science camp costs $3,000. 33
Some people say it’s too much work to save science camp, but the fact is that if we all help out, we can reach our goal easily. 34 For example, we could hold a talent auction (拍賣). By washing cars, babysitting, or using other talents, students can meet the goal. We could also hold a bake sale. Students could even ask local businesses to sponsor them.
35 If we all work together, we’ll easily raise the money to save it.
A.Students can raise money in many ways.
B.Now it might be canceled because of budget cuts.

〖導語〗這是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了科學家提出五步計劃來解決氮的雙面問題,即氮對空氣的污染和對提高糧食產量的重要作用;
1.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:但是氮,以及它在商業化肥中的大量使用,也會導致空氣污染和氣候變化。A. positive積極的;B. favorable有利的,贊許的;C. collective集體的,共同的;D. abundant大量的,豐富的。根據后文“their use also contributes to air pollution, increases the rates of cancer and reduces biodiversity, as well as releasing gas (laughing gas).”可知氮的使用對環境的消極影響很多,因此是氮在商業化肥中有大量的使用。故選D項;
2.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:有證據表明,它們的使用還會造成空氣污染,增加癌癥發病率,減少生物多樣性,以及釋放氣體(笑氣)。 A. promotes促進,提升;B. descends下降; C. reduces減少; D. expands擴大,增加。根據前文“ its abundant use in commercial fertilizer, also leads to air pollution and climate change.”可知氮的使用導致環境污染和氣候變化,那么生物生存的自然環境被改變了,生物多樣性也就減少了。故選C項;
3.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:但氮幫助養活了世界上大約一半的人口,在可預見的未來仍是必不可少的。A. shelter掩蔽,收容;B. feed喂養;C. rescue援救;D. adjust調整。根據前文連詞But,表示轉折,上一段說明氮的消極影響,那么本段說明氮的積極影響,結合后文提到的人口,可知氮幫助養活了世界上約一半人口。故選B項;
4.考查動詞短語辨析。句意:隨著化肥價格的上漲,許多發展中國家無法獲得化肥,從而對糧食安全構成威脅。A. take account of考慮到;B. take charge of負責;C. look up to尊敬;D. have access to使用,接近,可以利用。根據前文“With prices of fertilizer rising”和后文“with resulting threats to food security”可知化肥價格上漲,糧食安全受到威脅,可知許多發展中國家沒有化肥。故選D項;
5.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:全球氮的挑戰既包括減少化肥的使用,也包括把化肥運到最需要的地方。 A. advantage優勢;B. concept概念;C. challenge 挑戰;D. composition成分,作品。根據下文文“ both reducing fertilizer use, and getting it to where it’s needed most.” 可知全球氮的挑戰既包括減少化肥的使用,也包括把化肥運到最需要的地方。故選C項;
6.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:一組科學家提出了一個五步計劃來解決這個雙面問題。A. two-sided兩方面的;B. self-contradictory自相矛盾的;C. not-so-distant不遠的;D. energy-consuming耗能的,費精力的。根據前文提到的氮問題面臨的挑戰,即氮的過渡使用和有些地方沒有氮,可知這是一個雙面問題。故選A項;
7.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:領導者Benjamin Houlton解釋說,只有采取全面的方法,結合解決方案,才能在兩個層面上解決問題。 A. respectable值得尊重的,體面的;B. comprehensive綜合性的,全面的; C. substantial大量的,基本的;D. crucial至關重要的。根據前文提到的氮面臨的雙面問題可知需要采取全面的解決辦法以解決問題。故選B項;
8.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:確定的五個步驟包括改變農業做法,將肥料運送到需要的地方,減少氮污染,最后,減少食物浪費和促進飲食的改變。A. transforming轉變;B. exercising運動,練習;C. depriving奪去;D. concealing隱藏,掩飾。根據首段提到的氮在商業化肥中的過渡使用導致了很多環境問題,因此需要改變農業做法,以減少氮在商業化肥中的使用。故選A項;
9.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. former前者的;B. latter 后者的;C. prior先前的,事先的;D. rare 稀有的。根據句后文“approximately one-quarter of all global food produced is wasted”可知全球約四分之一的糧食生產被浪費,因此前文提到的五個步驟中,后面兩個與食物浪費和飲食有關的步驟最為重要。故選B項;
10.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. supply 供應;B. demand需求;C. wrapping包裝;D. advertising廣告。根據前文提到的糧食被浪費,結合空后的chain,可知是供應鏈食物被浪費了。故選A項;
11.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. applied應用;B. adapted適應;C. addressed 演說,解決;D. appealed呼吁,上訴,吸引。根據前文提到的糧食浪費,結合fertilizer可知是被應用到莊稼上的氮化肥被浪費了。故選A項;

13.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:他說:“事實是,氮是一種禍根,也是一種良藥。A. toast 烤面包片,慶祝;B. curse禍根,詛咒;C. fault錯誤,責任;D. trick技巧,花招。根據前文提到的增加的消極影響,和后文令人鼓舞的信息,可知Benjamin認為氮既是導致問題的原因(禍根),也可以解決問題的辦法(福音)。故選B項;
14.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:但如果你能減少氮的溢出,你就能迅速使系統恢復到原始狀態。A. original原始的;B. preferable更好的,更合適的;C. traditional傳統的;D. disposable一次性的。根據前文“ if you can reduce the spill-overs of nitrogen”可知,如果解決氮的過渡使用,那么引起的環境問題也能解決,即使生態系統就可以回到原始狀態。故選A項;
A. plentiful豐富的;B. visual視覺的;C. mutual相互的;D. immediate立刻的。根據前文“We lock in 30 to 50 years of climate impacts every time we send out a molecule of CO2 into the air.
16. D
17. B
18. C
19. A
根據第一段的“Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals.”
根據第二段的“Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(樹冠層) of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.”
根據第三段的“Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars.”

根據第二段中“Although the ice melted long ago, Earth’s crust (地殼) is still rising and sinking in reaction to its previous ice age burden. This movement is called glacial isostatic adjustment (冰川均衡調整).(雖然冰很久以前就融化了,但地殼仍然在上升和下降,這是對之前冰河時代的負擔的反應。這種運動被稱為冰川均衡調整)”可知,冰川均衡調整影響陸地的海拔高度,故選D。
24.推理判斷題。根據第四段中“Researchers are concerned that this may make a challenge to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.(研究人員擔心,這可能會給漁民帶來挑戰,因為在這些地區養魚可能會變得更加困難)”可知,漁民養魚可能會變得更加困難,由此推知當地人可能會感到擔心,故選A。
根據最后一段中“For example, a 2015 study suggests that the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the US could sink more than 15 centimeters by 2100. This sinking trend also suggests that these areas may experience more significant impacts from a rise in sea levels.(例如,2015年的一項研究表明,到2100年,美國東海岸的切薩皮克灣可能會下沉15厘米以上。這種下沉趨勢還表明,這些地區可能會受到海平面上升的更大影響)”可知,切薩皮克灣未來可能會下沉15厘米以上,該地區可能會受到海平面上升的更大影響,故未來可能面臨沿海洪水的增加,故選C。
26.主旨大意題。根據全文內容,結合第一段“As the climate continues to get warmer, the glaciers (冰川) are melting and the sea levels are rising. As it affects the land, mountains are taller than before. How does this happen

選項F(這聽起來很貴,但是如果每個學生集資10美金,這項基金就會被填滿)與上句句意邏輯一致,并且選項F中的that可以指代上句中提到的$3,000。故選F。
34.
由此可知選項A(學生可以通過很多方式集資)與空格后句子邏輯一致,故選A。
35.
選項E(自然科學營是值得保護的一個很好的傳統)與下句邏輯一致,其中的deserves to be saved(值得被保護)與下句中的save呼應,故選E。
