More than any other aspect of the climate crisis, it is the over-production of carbon dioxide that has been valued. But nitrogen, and its 1 use in commercial fertilizer, also leads to air pollution and climate change. Evidence suggests their use also contributes to air pollution, increases the rates of cancer and 2 biodiversity, as well as releasing gas (laughing gas).
But nitrogen helps 3 around half the world’s population and remains essential for the foreseeable future. With prices of fertilizer rising, many developing countries don’t 4 it, with resulting threats to food security. The global nitrogen 5 involves both reducing fertilizer use, and getting it to where it’s needed most.
A team of scientists has come up with a five-step plan to solve this 6 problem. Benjamin Houlton, the leader, explains that only by undertaking a 7 approach and combining solutions can the problem be solved on both levels.
The five steps identified involve 8 agricultural practices, getting fertilizer to the places it’s needed, reducing nitrogen pollution and finally, both reducing food waste and promoting a change in diet. The 9 two are essential because approximately one-quarter of all global food produced is wasted along the 10 chain, which means that a large portion of the nitrogen fertilizer 11 to crops is ultimately wasted.
Benjamin admits that adding nitrogen to the list of existing climate woes might cause a sense of exhaustion. 12 he has an encouraging message. “The truth is, nitrogen is a blessing and a 13 ,” he says, “But if you can reduce the spill-overs of nitrogen, you can quickly get systems to return to the 14 state. That makes it very different from CO2. We lock in 30 to 50 years of climate impacts every time we send out a molecule of CO2 into the air. But with nitrogen you can get 15 returns on investment.”

I grew up in the Great Lakes State,and for many years now,during my annual summer visit back to Michigan,I’m always happy about what I don’t see.I don’t see crowds of Californians rushing into lovely lakeside towns like Petoskey or Glen Arbor.I don’t see hundreds of New Yorkers playing in Lake Michigan or coming down the steep white sands of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
No offense to the masses on both coasts,but I’ve always been glad the original charms of northwest Michigan felt like my secret—or at least a secret held by a smaller group of people,largely from the Midwest.
Lately,however,I’ve been thinking about the downside of being out of sight and out of mind.
Most people seldom think about Lakes Michigan,Huron,Superior,Erie,and Ontario.Many can’t even name all five.But they should care about them because,as Tim Folger writes in a cover story,the Great Lakes are “arguably the continent’s most precious resource,unmeasurably more valuable than oil,gas,or coal”.
Together the lakes hold more than 20 percent of the surface fresh water on Earth and 84 percent of the surface fresh water in North America.Almost 40 million Americans and Canadians “drink from the lakes,fish on them,transport goods over them,farm on their shores,and work in cities that wouldn’t exist without them”,Folger writes.
And yet we abuse them terribly: polluting them,introducing invasive species,allowing fertilizer runoff(徑流) to create algal blooms(藻花)large enough that they can be seen from space.Climate change means the lakes don’t freeze as much as they used to,and severe storms have become more frequent.
So read Folger’s story.Appreciate the beauty of the landscape in the amazing photos by Keith Ladzinski.Become an advocate to protect our Great Lakes.

18.Which of the following is the current situation of the Great Lakes
A.People don’t treat them well.
B.Algal blooms are invisible from space.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics (工作狂). How could a person tell that he/ she is a workaholic A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working — or doing something to promote their work—they feel anxious and guilty. They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to make sure they’re essential.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American Journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising,since if you’re married to your work it can be difficult to be married to anything or anyone else. There have also been studies looking at their influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression (抑郁) and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many,it’s how they develop feelings of self-worth, confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a solution.
20.What can we infer about workaholics from paragraph 1
A.They usually have a life outside work. B.They put work in the first place.
C.They win respect from their workmates. D.They are under pressure from work.
21.What are paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A.Bad results of workaholism. B.How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
C.How people deal with their addictions. D.Reasons for being workaholics.
22.What can we do to help workaholics in life
A.Reward them for their hard work. B.Force them to join family activities.
C.Help them find self-worth and confidence. D.Try to understand and support them.
23.What is the author’s attitude toward working hard
A.Curious. B.Negative. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.

Modern research on body language—often called nonverbal behavior—began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality of facial expressions of emotion.That work was inspired in part by Charles Darwin’s study The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals(1872).But it had received little attention for around a century,according to nonverbal communication expert David Matsumoto.
Then modern researchers examined how the brain reacts to facial expressions and how babies copy facial and hand gestures.And scientists have also realized the complexity(復雜性) of body language.
Much research has suggested that body language is often hard to interpret or understand.But for years some advisers and experts have been using their knowledge in many practical areas.
“I help people influence and persuade others around,how trustworthy and credible their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication,” said Mark Bowden.He is the author of Winning Body Language,a guide for readers including business people and famous people.He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up,as well as those gestures.
Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions.Joe Navarro is the author of What Every Body Is Saying.It is a book about reading a person’s mind from their nonverbal behavior.“It’s easy to spot a speaker’s lip movements when he faces a question he doesn’t like,” Joe said.
While the work of these experts attracts large audiences,many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable.“Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states,” David Matsumoto said.So do some body movements.“But people do all kinds of things with their bodies,” he said.Your raised eyebrow(眉毛) could express doubt—but it might also signal discomfort or surprise.“The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures,” he said.
27.What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1
A.It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B.It promoted the development of human language.
C.It helped start modern research on body language.
D.It encouraged people to care more about animals.
28.What can we infer about Mark Bowden
A.He gives advice on business language.
B.He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
C.He pays more attention to spoken language.
D.He teaches people about body language.
29.What did David Matsumoto think of Joe Navarro’s methods
A.They were instructional.
B.They were doubtful.
C.They were experimental.
D.They were necessary.
30.What can be the best title for the text
A.Can Body Language Tell Important Truths
B.Is Nonverbal Behavior That Complex
C.Should You Know More About Body Language
D.Do Experts Know How to Interpret Emotions
Nature is the best laboratory for learning about nature. For ten years, every student at Wadsworth Middle School has been looking forward to his or her turn to attend a three-day science camp. 31 Science camp is important to the students, and we must raise the money necessary to save it.
Without science camp, students will miss out on a unique learning experience. In science class, they learn to identify rocks by picking them up out of a box. 32 Science camp also lets students experiment with different forms of energy. For example, students get to build miniature (微型的) steam engines that are powered by campfires. They also make solar panels that heat camp water. These experiences would be tough to create in a classroom.
Science camp is for everybody, and it won’t be saved unless everybody helps raise money for it. To get started, Principal Jeffries and the student council could set up a “science camp fund (資金)” at a local bank. Every year, science camp costs $3,000. 33
Some people say it’s too much work to save science camp, but the fact is that if we all help out, we can reach our goal easily. 34 For example, we could hold a talent auction (拍賣). By washing cars, babysitting, or using other talents, students can meet the goal. We could also hold a bake sale. Students could even ask local businesses to sponsor them.
35 If we all work together, we’ll easily raise the money to save it.
A.Students can raise money in many ways.
B.Now it might be canceled because of budget cuts.
C.They investigate the world through hands-on science.
D.Science camp is perfect for creative and curious ones.
E.Science camp is a great tradition that deserves to be saved.
F.That sounds expensive, but if every student raises just $10, the fund would be filled.
G.At science camp, they learn to identify rocks by finding them in mountain sides or river beds.

31.
選項F(這聽起來很貴,但是如果每個學生集資10美金,這項基金就會被填滿)與上句句意邏輯一致,并且選項F中的that可以指代上句中提到的$3,000。故選F。

35.
選項E(自然科學營是值得保護的一個很好的傳統)與下句邏輯一致,其中的deserves to be saved(值得被保護)與下句中的save呼應,故選E。

My English learning experience
In China, learning English is a must for almost all the students, no matter they are pupils or college students. It is true that many lucky students have a talent for English learning and they have no trouble learning it. For me, learning English used to be painful and tiring.
For example, it was very hard for me to memorize new words and I could only speak two or three words each time. Having been laughed at by others many times, I even stopped learning it for weeks. However, with my English teacher’s continuous encouragement, I tried my best and used every chance to speak English. Now I can communicate with foreigners in English without any difficulty.
My advice: Never give up learning English, and you can be an excellent English learner.

The UK’s first large-scale seagrass nursery aims to restore (恢復) one of the world's most important and threatened habitats: seagrass meadows (草地). The project has processed 1.5 million seeds collected from Wales and England over the past two years. These seeds are grown in ponds using seawater from Carmarthen Bay, providing a vital habitat for marine (海洋的) lives like seahorses, octopuses, and cuttlefish, and serving as an important carbon (碳) sink.
Emily Yates, the nursery lead, mentioned the challenges due to the lack of a handbook for growing seagrass from seed. They found that planting seeds in a mix of good quality soil and sands works well. Two main UK species, eelgrass (Zostera marina) and dwarf eelgrass (Zostera noltii), are grown in controlled conditions within polytunnels and outdoor ponds.
The project is a joint venture by Project Seagrass and the wetland specialist Salix. They have successfully introduced the first batch of plants into the wild, contributing to the restoration of underwater meadows and increasing biodiversity. The UK has lost about 90% of its seagrass meadows, half of which has disappeared in the past three decades due to a wasting disease in the 1930s and increased human activities like pollution. Seagrass meadows are critical for marine biodiversity and act as significant carbon sinks, helping reduce climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.
Project Seagrass argues that without replanting, natural recovery is unlikely. Replanting efforts are crucial because they help rebuild the ecosystem services provided by seagrass meadows, such as supporting fish populations, protecting coastlines, and improving water quality.
The hope is that over time, more ponds will be changed into seagrass nursery pools, helping to bring back this critical habitat. The project is not only about environmental restoration but also about raising awareness and educating the public about the importance of seagrass meadows and the urgent need to protect and restore them.
13.What challenge did Emily Yates meet
A.Insufficient funding. B.Lack of suitable climate.
C.High cost of planting the seagrass seeds. D.No related instructions for planting seagrass.
14.What do we know about seagrass meadows from paragraph 3
A.They have disappeared in the UK. B.They can create a long-term store of carbon.

[湖北宜城一中等五校2022高一聯考]In Australia, plenty of wild things can bite or, sting (刺痛) you.Strangely enough, one of them is a tree.The rain forests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging (刺人的) tree known as Dendrocnide.
Native Australians also call it the gympie gympie tree.“Like other stinging plants, the stinging tree is covered in needle like hairs, around five millimetres in length and can inject (注射) poison when they touch skin.The pain caused by the sting is severe and can last for even weeks,” said Irina Vetter, associate professor at the University of Queensland.
Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting.Now researchers have discovered what makes the tree's sting so bad.After carefully studying different kinds of gympie gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce.This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals they believed was responsible for the pain.
The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”.
When the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked (舔) the injected places, showing that they hurt in those places.When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot like (扭結的) shape.The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long.
The knot like shape of gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails.The scientists were surprised to see different kinds of life all using similar poisons.Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures.It's not clear how stinging helps the gympie gympie tree.
The scientists also discovered gympietides seem to cause everlasting changes to the channels in sensory neurons (感覺神經元).This action also helps to explain why the pain lasts so long.
“By understanding how this poison works, we hope to provide better treatment for those who have been stung by the plant, to ease or stop the pain,” said Vetter.
17.What is the function of Paragraph 2
A.To provide information about the stinging tree.
B.To warn people of the danger of the stinging tree.
C.To stress the importance of studying the stinging tree.
D.To explain the reason why the stinging tree is poisonous.;
18.What do scientists fail to find out about the stinging tree
A.How it produces poison. B.What poison it produces.
C.How the sting helps the tree. D.The consequences of its sting.;
19.What does Irina Vetter think of the research findings
A.They are not reliable. B.They are of great value.
C.They have no practical use. D.They need to be further proved.;
20.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Scientists discover the stinging tree's secret

While temperatures continue to climb,visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border.The park is known as the hottest place on Earth.This past weekend,the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃.Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks,at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes.That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue.While park rangers(護林員) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need,it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted.Alessia Dempster,who was visiting from Edinburgh,Scotland,said,“It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind.You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat,but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains,the park service’s website says.The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface.The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still,several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists.Badwater Basin,made up of salt flats,is considered the lowest point in all of North America.The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years.And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller,a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far,shared that feeling.“It’s hot,but the scenery is awesome,” he said.

B.To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C.To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D.To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.

Mr. Boswell, the owner of a hardware (五金制品) store, was looking for a young man to hire. Several dozen young men responded to his ad, but he eventually narrowed his choice down to three. They are Ted, John and Bob. Then he devised (設計) a final test. He gave each of them a new screwdriver (螺絲刀) with an innovative (創新的) design and told them to deliver it to Mr. Henderson at 314 Maple Street.
After a while, Ted phoned the store to ask whether the number was actually 413, rather than 314. Later, he returned saying there was no house at that address.
When John came back, he reported that 314 Maple was a funeral parlor (殯葬館) and that Mr. Henderson had lived at 314, but had moved away.
Bob took longer than the other two young men. Like John, he also discovered that Mr. Henderson had moved away but he managed to make sure of his new address and had gone there. Mr. Henderson didn’t remember ordering the screwdriver, but when Bob pointed out its unique features and told him the price, Mr. Henderson decided he wanted the screwdriver and paid for it on the spot.
Who was hired Bob, of course. He was given a task to do and he did it. We shouldn’t let any difficulty put in our paths and stop us from reaching our goals. The secret to success in our lives is to do the common things uncommonly well. Persistence (堅持) and patience produces payoff in our lives.
City parks and open space improve our physical and mental health, strengthen our communities, and make our cities and neighbourhoods more attractive places to live and work. 30
31 In Boulder, Colorado, a greenbelt added $5.4 million to the total property values of one neighbourhood. Other things being equal, there was a $4.20 decrease in the price of property for every foot one moved away from the greenbelt, and the average value of homes next to the greenbelt was 32% percent higher than those 3,200 feet away.

How to Achieve Success
In my opinion, success is more than just reaching high-level achievements. It is about fulfilling one’s potential, growing as an individual, and making contributions to society. It is the result of continuous self-improvement and the ability to overcome various challenges.
To achieve success, I will first set clear, specific, and achievable goals. These goals will act as my guiding stars. Then, I will work hard with great determination. No matter how many difficulties I encounter, I will never give up easily. I also realize the importance of a positive attitude.

It’s a Friday morning in Boston, which means Dr Jim O’Connell is making his rounds. He might be more comfortable inside an exam room, but that’s not where his patients are. O’Connell is one of a handful of physicians making house calls to the homeless in the city. More than 550,000 Americans are homeless, and many have health problems but no access to care. O’Connell and his team are doing something about it. They spend their days walking around where the homeless live — in parks, under bridges, and outside town. They treat about 700 regular patients. During these rounds, O’Connell himself usually sees about 20 patients. He knows where most of them sleep and whom to ask if they are missing.
O’Connell went to Harvard Medical School and was on his way to a famous oncology (腫瘤學) scholarship when his chief suggested he take what was supposed to be a one-year position as the founding physician of a new health-care programme for Boston’s homeless people. That turned into a 33-year career at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Programme, one of the country’s largest of its kind.
O’Connell provides just everything, from stitches (縫線) for an arm to surgery for the soul. If patients can’t be treated on the street, he finds them a treatment bed at the organization’s medical respite (暫緩) facility, a place for patients who are too sick to be on the streets but not ill enough for a hospital stay.
“Everything I had been taught to do in medical school — go fast, be efficient (高效的) — wascounterproductivewhen you take care of homeless people” O’Connell toldHarvard Magazine. “When you see somebody outside, you get them a cup of coffee and sit with them. Sometimes it took six months or a year of offering a sandwich or coffee before someone would start to talk to me. But once they form a good relationship with you, they’ll come to you anytime because they trust you.” When asked about how his life might have turned out, had he become a highly paid physician, O’Connell said “I never think about it anymore.”
Some things are more valuable than money. Just ask O’Connell who gets everything from patients who have nothing material to give.

As the climate continues to get warmer, the glaciers (冰川) are melting and the sea levels are rising. As it affects the land, mountains are taller than before. How does this happen
Scientists studied the last ice age, which occurred 16,000 years ago when much of Earth’s Northern Hemisphere was covered in ice. Although the ice melted long ago, Earth’s crust (地殼) is still rising and sinking in reaction to its previous ice age burden. This movement is called glacial isostatic adjustment
Scientists believe that an ice sheet about 800 meters thick could cause a depression (洼地) about 275 meters deep, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. “As the ice sheets began to melt around 11,700 years ago, the glaciers cleared large and heavy masses, allowing the mountains to rise up,” US geologist Mike Kaplan told the Columbia Climate Scehool website.
Recent studies suggest that land in southeast Alaska is rising at a rate of about 3centimeters per year. Families living on the coast welcome this “new” land, according to The New York Times. However, they soon find themselves in a trap. As the land uplifts and coastal areas move away from the sea, rivers can dry up more easily, making it harder for them to reach the sea. This could result in a reduction in water resources, affecting animals and creatures living in the rivers. Researchers are concerned that this may make a challenge to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.
While the depression of Earth’s crust springs back slowly, once uplifted areas are sinking. For example, a 2015 study suggests that the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the US could sink more than 15 centimeters by 2100. This sinking trend also suggests that these areas may experience more significant impacts from a rise in sea levels.
19.What can we learn about glacial isostatie adjustment
A.It mainly happened during the last ice age.

C.It becomes a burden of the earth.
D.It affects the land’s height above sea level.

23.What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1
A.It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B.It promoted the development of human language.
C.It helped start modern research on body language.
D.It encouraged people to care more about animals.
24.What can we infer about Mark Bowden
A.He gives advice on business language.
B.He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
C.He pays more attention to spoken language.
D.He teaches people about body language.

A.They were instructional.
B.They were doubtful.
C.They were experimental.

Climate change demands a food revolution. Faced with heat, drought, pests and diseases, the crops we eat every day might disappear in a generation or less, at least where they are currently grown. From beef and fish to chocolate and wine, one beloved food after another is joining the at-risk list.
Take coffee. Right now, Arabica and Canephora, the most popular two species in the industry, are under urgent threat worldwide—as are the 125 million people who depend on coffee crops for their income. Coffee Arabica plants, which produce 70% of all commercial coffee, can be negatively affected by even a half-degree change in typical weather conditions. This sensitivity to temperature puts the plant at increased risk of the effects of climate change.
In Central America the average temperature has risen by a full degree Celsius since 1960. In Ethiopia the average temperature has increased by 1. 3 degrees. This increase is enough to have significant effects on the plants. In Tanzania the productivity per hectare of coffee has fallen by 45% since the 1960s due to changes in temperature.
Indeed, studies claim that by 2050 the area of the world suitable for growing coffee will be cut by 60%. Coffee production is likely to then be pushed to higher elevations(海拔) to take advantage of lower temperatures, but this will not be enough to make up for lost lowland areas.
Coffee is the second most traded goods by developing nations, and the inability of producer nations to export it could cause dramatic chain reactions in their economies. Millions of people make a living in the production, processing, transport, and sale of coffee; their livelihoods would stand to take a blow as growing areas decrease and prices rise.
As the temperature keeps rising, your cup of coffee will become much more expensive, and it may also carry an aftertaste bitterer than usual, for all those workers in the coffee belt left without the means to make a living as conditions worsen. Not only that, but the economic effects will cost the West millions in increased foreign aid.
27.Which is NOT one of the contributors to the disappearing food species
A.Drought. B.Poverty. C.Climate change. D.Pests.
28.How does the author prove the effects of climate change on coffee planting
A.By listing examples of foods. B.By presenting figures.
C.By making a prediction. D.By analyzing causes and effects.
29.Why will people have to grow coffee in highland areas
A.To adapt to the change of temperature.
B.To increase the quality of the produce.
C.To reduce the cost of coffee production.
D.To get access to water supply more easily.
30.What can be learnt from the last two paragraphs
A.The rich will get richer and the poor poorer.
B.It will cost you more to have a cup of coffee.
C.Developed countries ought to aid poor countries.
D.Coffee trade will eventually disappear in the world.

〖導語〗這是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了科學家提出五步計劃來解決氮的雙面問題,即氮對空氣的污染和對提高糧食產量的重要作用;
1.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:但是氮,以及它在商業化肥中的大量使用,也會導致空氣污染和氣候變化。A. positive積極的;B. favorable有利的,贊許的;C. collective集體的,共同的;D. abundant大量的,豐富的。根據后文“their use also contributes to air pollution, increases the rates of cancer and reduces biodiversity, as well as releasing gas (laughing gas).”可知氮的使用對環境的消極影響很多,因此是氮在商業化肥中有大量的使用。故選D項;
2.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:有證據表明,它們的使用還會造成空氣污染,增加癌癥發病率,減少生物多樣性,以及釋放氣體(笑氣)。 A. promotes促進,提升;B. descends下降; C. reduces減少; D. expands擴大,增加。根據前文“ its abundant use in commercial fertilizer, also leads to air pollution and climate change.”可知氮的使用導致環境污染和氣候變化,那么生物生存的自然環境被改變了,生物多樣性也就減少了。故選C項;
3.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:但氮幫助養活了世界上大約一半的人口,在可預見的未來仍是必不可少的。A. shelter掩蔽,收容;B. feed喂養;C. rescue援救;D. adjust調整。根據前文連詞But,表示轉折,上一段說明氮的消極影響,那么本段說明氮的積極影響,結合后文提到的人口,可知氮幫助養活了世界上約一半人口。故選B項;
4.考查動詞短語辨析。句意:隨著化肥價格的上漲,許多發展中國家無法獲得化肥,從而對糧食安全構成威脅。A. take account of考慮到;B. take charge of負責;C. look up to尊敬;D. have access to使用,接近,可以利用。根據前文“With prices of fertilizer rising”和后文“with resulting threats to food security”可知化肥價格上漲,糧食安全受到威脅,可知許多發展中國家沒有化肥。故選D項;
5.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:全球氮的挑戰既包括減少化肥的使用,也包括把化肥運到最需要的地方。 A. advantage優勢;B. concept概念;C. challenge 挑戰;D. composition成分,作品。根據下文文“ both reducing fertilizer use, and getting it to where it’s needed most.” 可知全球氮的挑戰既包括減少化肥的使用,也包括把化肥運到最需要的地方。故選C項;
6.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:一組科學家提出了一個五步計劃來解決這個雙面問題。A. two-sided兩方面的;B. self-contradictory自相矛盾的;C. not-so-distant不遠的;D. energy-consuming耗能的,費精力的。根據前文提到的氮問題面臨的挑戰,即氮的過渡使用和有些地方沒有氮,可知這是一個雙面問題。故選A項;
7.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:領導者Benjamin Houlton解釋說,只有采取全面的方法,結合解決方案,才能在兩個層面上解決問題。 A. respectable值得尊重的,體面的;B. comprehensive綜合性的,全面的; C. substantial大量的,基本的;D. crucial至關重要的。根據前文提到的氮面臨的雙面問題可知需要采取全面的解決辦法以解決問題。故選B項;
8.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:確定的五個步驟包括改變農業做法,將肥料運送到需要的地方,減少氮污染,最后,減少食物浪費和促進飲食的改變。A. transforming轉變;B. exercising運動,練習;C. depriving奪去;D. concealing隱藏,掩飾。根據首段提到的氮在商業化肥中的過渡使用導致了很多環境問題,因此需要改變農業做法,以減少氮在商業化肥中的使用。故選A項;
9.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. former前者的;B. latter 后者的;C. prior先前的,事先的;D. rare 稀有的。根據句后文“approximately one-quarter of all global food produced is wasted”可知全球約四分之一的糧食生產被浪費,因此前文提到的五個步驟中,后面兩個與食物浪費和飲食有關的步驟最為重要。故選B項;
10.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. supply 供應;B. demand需求;C. wrapping包裝;D. advertising廣告。根據前文提到的糧食被浪費,結合空后的chain,可知是供應鏈食物被浪費了。故選A項;
11.考查動詞詞義辨析。句意:后兩者至關重要,因為全球約四分之一的糧食生產在供應鏈上被浪費了,這意味著用于作物的大部分氮肥最終被浪費了。 A. applied應用;B. adapted適應;C. addressed 演說,解決;D. appealed呼吁,上訴,吸引。根據前文提到的糧食浪費,結合fertilizer可知是被應用到莊稼上的氮化肥被浪費了。故選A項;

13.考查名詞詞義辨析。句意:他說:“事實是,氮是一種禍根,也是一種良藥。A. toast 烤面包片,慶祝;B. curse禍根,詛咒;C. fault錯誤,責任;D. trick技巧,花招。根據前文提到的增加的消極影響,和后文令人鼓舞的信息,可知Benjamin認為氮既是導致問題的原因(禍根),也可以解決問題的辦法(福音)。故選B項;
14.考查形容詞詞義辨析。句意:但如果你能減少氮的溢出,你就能迅速使系統恢復到原始狀態。A. original原始的;B. preferable更好的,更合適的;C. traditional傳統的;D. disposable一次性的。根據前文“ if you can reduce the spill-overs of nitrogen”可知,如果解決氮的過渡使用,那么引起的環境問題也能解決,即使生態系統就可以回到原始狀態。故選A項;
A. plentiful豐富的;B. visual視覺的;C. mutual相互的;D. immediate立刻的。根據前文“We lock in 30 to 50 years of climate impacts every time we send out a molecule of CO2 into the air.

16. D
17. C
18. A
根據第二段中的“O’Connell went to Harvard Medical School and was on his way to a famous oncology (腫瘤學) scholarship when his chief suggested he take what was supposed to be a one-year position as the founding physician of a new health-care programme for Boston’s homeless people. That turned into a 33-year career at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Programme, one of the country’s largest of its kind.
根據畫線詞上文“Everything I had been taught to do in medical school — go fast, be efficient (高效的) (我在醫學院學到的一切——快速、高效的)”及下文“When you see somebody outside, you get them a cup of coffee and sit with them. Sometimes it took six months or a year of offering a sandwich or coffee before someone would start to talk to me. But once they form a good relationship with you, they’ll come to you anytime because they trust you.(當你在外面看到別人時,你會給他們倒杯咖啡,和他們坐在一起。有時候,我得等上六個月或一年才會有人主動跟我說話。但一旦他們與你建立了良好的關系,他們就會隨時來找你,因為他們信任你。)”可知,O’Connell提到醫學教育中快速、高效的原則在照顧無家可歸者時并不適用,相反,需要耐心和建立信任,通過長時間的接觸和幫助才能讓他們打開心扉。因此,counterproductive在此處意為“達到與預期相反的結果”。A. High-efficient高效;B. Being more productive提高工作效率;C. Achieving the opposite result to the one that you want獲得與你想要的相反的結果;D. Achieving the excellent result to the one that you want達到理想的效果。故選C。
(O’Connell畢業于哈佛醫學院,在獲得著名的腫瘤學獎學金的途中,他的上司建議他擔任一個為期一年的職位,擔任波士頓無家可歸者新醫療保健項目的創始醫生。后來,我在波士頓無家可歸者醫療保健項目工作了33年,該項目是美國同類項目中規模最大的之一。)”和第四段中的“When you see somebody outside, you get them a cup of coffee and sit with them. Sometimes it took six months or a year of offering a sandwich or coffee before someone would start to talk to me. But once they form a good relationship with you, they’ll come to you anytime because they trust you. (當你在外面看到別人時,你會給他們倒杯咖啡,和他們坐在一起。有時候,我得等上六個月或一年才會有人主動跟我說話。但一旦他們與你建立了良好的關系,他們就會隨時來找你,因為他們信任你。)”可知,他放棄高薪腫瘤學獎學金機會、33年來一直為無家可歸者提供醫療服務、愿意花長時間與病人建立信任關系等。由此推知,他是一個勤奮、善良、有耐心且無私的人。故選A。

根據第二段中“Although the ice melted long ago, Earth’s crust (地殼) is still rising and sinking in reaction to its previous ice age burden. This movement is called glacial isostatic adjustment (冰川均衡調整).(雖然冰很久以前就融化了,但地殼仍然在上升和下降,這是對之前冰河時代的負擔的反應。這種運動被稱為冰川均衡調整)”可知,冰川均衡調整影響陸地的海拔高度,故選D。
20.推理判斷題。根據第四段中“Researchers are concerned that this may make a challenge to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.(研究人員擔心,這可能會給漁民帶來挑戰,因為在這些地區養魚可能會變得更加困難)”可知,漁民養魚可能會變得更加困難,由此推知當地人可能會感到擔心,故選A。
根據最后一段中“For example, a 2015 study suggests that the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the US could sink more than 15 centimeters by 2100. This sinking trend also suggests that these areas may experience more significant impacts from a rise in sea levels.(例如,2015年的一項研究表明,到2100年,美國東海岸的切薩皮克灣可能會下沉15厘米以上。這種下沉趨勢還表明,這些地區可能會受到海平面上升的更大影響)”可知,切薩皮克灣未來可能會下沉15厘米以上,該地區可能會受到海平面上升的更大影響,故未來可能面臨沿海洪水的增加,故選C。
22.主旨大意題。根據全文內容,結合第一段“As the climate continues to get warmer, the glaciers (冰川) are melting and the sea levels are rising. As it affects the land, mountains are taller than before. How does this happen (隨著氣候持續變暖,冰川正在融化,海平面正在上升。由于它對陸地的影響,山比以前高了。這是怎么發生的?)”可知,文章主要是關于冰川融化對陸地的影響,山比以前更高,B項“冰川融化使山脈變得更高”為最佳標題,故選B。

26.標題歸納題。通讀全文尤其是首尾兩段可知,文章介紹了關于肢體語言的現代研究,探討了肢體語言的含義是否具有普遍性。故選A。
27.B;
28.D;
29.A;
30.C
根據第一段中“Faced with heat, drought, pests and diseases, the crops we eat every day might disappear in a generation or less, at least where they are currently grown.( 面對高溫、干旱、病蟲害,我們每天食用的作物可能在一代人或更短的時間內消失,至少在目前種植的地方是這樣。)”
根據第二段中“Coffee Arabica plants, which produce 70% of all commercial coffee, can be negatively affected by even a half-degree change in typical weather conditions. This sensitivity to temperature puts the plant at increased risk of the effects of climate change.( 阿拉比卡咖啡的產量占所有商業咖啡產量的70%,在典型的天氣條件下,即使是半度的變化也會對其產生負面影響。這種對溫度的敏感性使植物面臨更大的受氣候變化影響的風險。)”可知,在本段中,以咖啡為例。分析了氣溫的變化導致了咖啡產量的減少。由此通過分析原因和闡述結果,來證明氣候變化對咖啡種植的影響。故選D。
29.
細節理解題。根據第四段中“Coffee production is likely to then be pushed to higher elevations(海拔) to take advantage of lower temperatures, but this will not be enough to make up for lost lowland areas.( 咖啡生產很可能會被推到海拔更高的地方,以利用較低的溫度,但這不足以彌補失去的低地地區。)” 故選A。
30.
根據倒數第二段中“Coffee is the second most traded goods by developing nations, and the inability of producer nations to export it could cause dramatic chain reactions in their economies. (咖啡是發展中國家第二大貿易量的商品,生產國無法出口咖啡可能會在經濟中引發巨大的連鎖反應。)”以及倒數第一段中“ As the temperature keeps rising, your cup of coffee will become much more expensive, and it may also carry an aftertaste bitterer than usual, for all those workers in the coffee belt left without the means to make a living as conditions worsen.

選項F(這聽起來很貴,但是如果每個學生集資10美金,這項基金就會被填滿)與上句句意邏輯一致,并且選項F中的that可以指代上句中提到的$3,000。故選F。
34.
由此可知選項A(學生可以通過很多方式集資)與空格后句子邏輯一致,故選A。
35.
選項E(自然科學營是值得保護的一個很好的傳統)與下句邏輯一致,其中的deserves to be saved(值得被保護)與下句中的save呼應,故選E。

Antarctica(南極洲)’s melting ice, which has caused global sea levels to rise by at least 13.8 millimeters over the past 40 years, was thought to primarily come from the unstable West Antarctic Ice Sheet(WAIS). Now, scientists have found that the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS)—considered largely unaffected by climate change—may also be melting at an unexpectedly rapid speed.
The WAIS, whose base is below sea level, has long been considered the most likely to break down. Besides gravity, a deep current of warm water slips beneath the sheet, melting it from below until it becomes a floating shelf at risk of breaking away. In contrast, extreme cold and a base mostly above sea level are thought to keep the EAIS relatively safe from warm waters.
But as greenhouse gases warm much of the planet, driving stronger polar winds, some scientists think warm water carried by a circular current will start to invade East Antarctica’s once unassailable ice. A cooperation of more than 60 scientists last year, published in Nature, estimated that the EAIS actually added about 5 billion tons of ice each year from 1992 to 2017.
Eric Rignot of the University of California, Irvine, and colleagues combined 40 years of satellite imagery and climate modeling and found that overall Antarctica now sends six times more ice into the sea each year than it did in 1979, with the majority coming from West Antarctica. But East Antarctica was responsible for more than 30% of Antarctica’s contribution to the 13.8-millimeter sea level rise over the past 40 years. “The more we look at this system the more we realize this is fragile,” Rignot says. “Once these glaciers become unstable there is no red button to press to stop it.”
Rignot hopes the study brings greater attention to a part of Antarctica that has traditionally been understudied. Helen Fricker, a glaciologist (冰川學家) in California, agrees. “We need to monitor the entire Antarctica and we just can’t do that without international cooperation.”
16.What is the new finding of scientists
A.The east Antarctica is losing ice at an increasing rate.
B.The west Antarctica is melting six times faster than in 1979.
C.5 billion tons of ice is added to Antarctica each year.
D.The sea level has risen by 13.8 mm over the past 40 years.
17.Which factor leads to the EAIS’s melting fast
A.A base mostly over sea level. B.The force of gravity.
C.The invasion of a warm current. D.Extremely low temperature.
18.Which of the following best explains “unassailable” underlined in Para. 3
A.Fragile. B.Unattackable.
C.Mild. D.Unstable.
19.Which way does Helen Fricker specially advocate
A.Satellite imagery. B.Global monitoring.

20.What can we learn about glacial isostatie adjustment

24.What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1
A.It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B.It promoted the development of human language.
C.It helped start modern research on body language.
D.It encouraged people to care more about animals.
25.What can we infer about Mark Bowden
A.He gives advice on business language.
B.He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
C.He pays more attention to spoken language.
D.He teaches people about body language.
26.What did David Matsumoto think of Joe Navarro’s methods
A.They were instructional.
B.They were doubtful.
C.They were experimental.
D.They were necessary.

28.Which is NOT one of the contributors to the disappearing food species
A.Drought. B.Poverty. C.Climate change. D.Pests.
29.How does the author prove the effects of climate change on coffee planting
A.By listing examples of foods. B.By presenting figures.
C.By making a prediction. D.By analyzing causes and effects.
30.Why will people have to grow coffee in highland areas
A.To adapt to the change of temperature.
B.To increase the quality of the produce.
C.To reduce the cost of coffee production.
D.To get access to water supply more easily.
31.What can be learnt from the last two paragraphs
A.The rich will get richer and the poor poorer.
B.It will cost you more to have a cup of coffee.
C.Developed countries ought to aid poor countries.
D.Coffee trade will eventually disappear in the world.
Nature is the best laboratory for learning about nature. For ten years, every student at Wadsworth Middle School has been looking forward to his or her turn to attend a three-day science camp. 32 Science camp is important to the students, and we must raise the money necessary to save it.
Without science camp, students will miss out on a unique learning experience. In science class, they learn to identify rocks by picking them up out of a box. 33 Science camp also lets students experiment with different forms of energy.
Every year, science camp costs $3,000. 34
Some people say it’s too much work to save science camp, but the fact is that if we all help out, we can reach our goal easily. 35 For example, we could hold a talent auction (拍賣). By washing cars, babysitting, or using other talents, students can meet the goal. We could also hold a bake sale. Students could even ask local businesses to sponsor them.
36 If we all work together, we’ll easily raise the money to save it.

20.D
21.A
22.C
23.B
根據第二段中“Although the ice melted long ago, Earth’s crust (地殼) is still rising and sinking in reaction to its previous ice age burden. This movement is called glacial isostatic adjustment (冰川均衡調整).(雖然冰很久以前就融化了,但地殼仍然在上升和下降,這是對之前冰河時代的負擔的反應。這種運動被稱為冰川均衡調整)”可知,冰川均衡調整影響陸地的海拔高度,故選D。
21.推理判斷題。根據第四段中“Researchers are concerned that this may make a challenge to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.(研究人員擔心,這可能會給漁民帶來挑戰,因為在這些地區養魚可能會變得更加困難)”可知,漁民養魚可能會變得更加困難,由此推知當地人可能會感到擔心,故選A。
23.主旨大意題。根據全文內容,結合第一段“As the climate continues to get warmer, the glaciers (冰川) are melting and the sea levels are rising. As it affects the land, mountains are taller than before. How does this happen (隨著氣候持續變暖,冰川正在融化,海平面正在上升。由于它對陸地的影響,山比以前高了。這是怎么發生的?)”可知,文章主要是關于冰川融化對陸地的影響,山比以前更高,B項“冰川融化使山脈變得更高”為最佳標題,故選B。

【詳解】
本文是一篇說明文。闡述的是氣候變化的影響會顯著影響咖啡。如咖啡的產量、價格和成產成本等。
28.
細節理解題。根據第一段中“Faced with heat, drought, pests and diseases, the crops we eat every day might disappear in a generation or less, at least where they are currently grown.( 面對高溫、干旱、病蟲害,我們每天食用的作物可能在一代人或更短的時間內消失,至少在目前種植的地方是這樣。)”
30.
31.
(隨著氣溫的持續上升,你喝的咖啡會變得更貴,而且回味起來可能會比平時更苦,因為隨著環境的惡化,所有那些在咖啡帶工作的人都沒有辦法謀生。)”可知,就是在咖啡上這些小的變化,結果產生了巨大的連鎖反應,導致咖啡成本的上升,你喝的咖啡會更貴。故選C。

34.
空格位于段尾。空格前一句句意為:每年,科學訓練營花費3000美金。選項F(這聽起來很貴,但是如果每個學生集資10美金,這項基金就會被填滿)與上句句意邏輯一致,并且選項F中的that可以指代上句中提到的$3,000。故選F。
35.
由此可知選項A(學生可以通過很多方式集資)與空格后句子邏輯一致,故選A。
36.
選項E(自然科學營是值得保護的一個很好的傳統)與下句邏輯一致,其中的deserves to be saved(值得被保護)與下句中的save呼應,故選E。

Passenger ships, trade ships, and fishing boats are a normal part of life on the open sea. However, all their activity creates a great deal of noise underwater. Scientists who have studied the recordings of sound recorded with equipment placed underwater recently reported their observations that the ocean is getting noisier.
Another report on the effect of noise from ships on the behavior of whales shows it is likely that whales must call out more loudly to be heard over this noise. The whales find fish by producing clicking sounds and other noises, loud engine noise could be interfering with (妨礙) their efforts.
Michael Jasny, a policy expert for the Natural Resources Defense Council, says the rise of underwriter noise is influencing the ability of whales to communicate. “Shipping noise falls across the sea frequencies (頻率) that these animals use for their important behaviors.”
Mr. Jasny says sound travels very effectively underwater. And it is not just whales that he is worried about. “The entire web of life in the ocean depends on sound. And as more and more research has been done, it’s been very clear that what we have on our hands is really a significant serious and global problem.”
The main source of noise pollution is the propeller (螺旋槳). Better shaped propellers and ship designs can help cut down on noise pollution. Michael Bahtiarian, who works for Noise Control Engineering — a company which helped design the boats — said, “The technology to make quieter ships does exist and has been used in the military for some time. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has four new ships that have such costly engines, which produce less noise. These NOAA ships show that you can get quiet — I think they’re quiet enough — because they are able to go up quietly and count a fish and notstartlethe fish so that they can actually count them.”
The shipping industry in the United States wants to be part of the solution to the noise problem, Kathy Metcalf, who works for the Chamber of Shipping of America, says it will be much less costly for the industry if it chooses to build quieter ships instead of being forced to do so.

根據第二段的“Another report on the effect of noise from ships on the behavior of whales shows it is likely that whales must call out more loudly to be heard over this noise. The whales find fish by producing clicking sounds and other noises, loud engine noise could be interfering with (妨礙) their efforts. ( 另一份關于船只噪音對鯨魚行為影響的報告顯示,鯨魚很可能必須大聲呼喊才能被聽到。鯨魚通過發出咔嗒聲和其他噪音來尋找魚類,巨大的發動機噪音可能會干擾它們的努力。)”可知,船只產生的噪音影響了鯨魚的正常生活,使它們需要更大聲地呼叫才能被聽見。故選B。

22. 推理判斷題。根據最后一段 “The shipping industry in the United States wants to be part of the solution to the noise problem, Kathy Metcalf, who works for the Chamber of Shipping of America, says it will be much less costly for the industry if it chooses to build quieter ships instead of being forced to do so. ( 美國航運業希望成為解決噪音問題的一部分,美國航運商會的凱西·梅特卡夫表示,如果航運業主動選擇建造更安靜的船舶,而不是被迫去做,那么對行業來說成本將會低得多)”可推知,航運業應該主動建造更安靜的船只,這樣成本會更低,而不是等到被迫采取行動。故選B。
