Chichen Itza

Calakmul
In Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding forest comes alive with birdsong.

Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long-lasting, according to Virginia Sole-Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.

Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but Simmons said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. In the Arab world, a souk (露天市場(chǎng)) is a market usually held in an open-air location. Souks are an important part of life in the Middle East.12 Another attraction of souks is that they offer visitors a great opportunity to feel the local culture.
Most major souks probably started as informal meetings of merchants (商人) in open spaces, which slowly developed into more formal markets13 For example, some souks have partial ceilings (頂棚) to protect against bad weather, along with narrow streets which do not permit cars.
Everything from glassware to meat can be found at a souk, with merchants coming from nearby areas to sell their products.14 So visitors can easily find beautiful artworks in all shapes and sizes at a souk, often at very reasonable prices.

The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles. I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me. Mr Choi was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved.“The robot was able to present such detailed moves much better than I had imagined,” he said.

Last September, a strange seismic signal (地震信號(hào)), lasting more than a week, attracted the attention of researchers around the world. It took 68 experts from 15 countries to discover the cause of the “USO” -Unidentified Seismic Object.
The term USO is used informally by scientists for unusual seismic signals that can’t be explained, according to Kristian Svennevig, the lead author of a new report on this signal. From the start, scientists agreed this signal was not from an earthquake.
Svennevig compared earthquakes to hitting piano keys with force, creating a mix of sounds that disappeared quickly. However, the unusual signal was like a single piano key producing a clear sound that lasted for nine days.
Researchers tracked the signal to a huge snowslide in eastern Greenland’s Dickson fjord (峽灣), which was formed by melting (融化) ice due to climate change. Some 1.2 kilometers above the fjord, a mountaintop fell, driving more than 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the water-enough to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The resulting tsunami (海嘯) reached a height of 200 meters. The wave’s energy was caught in the rocky fjord, causing the water to move back and forth. This movement created the seismic signal.
Svennevig noted that understanding this event took time. Even when they had ideas about what happened, they needed more information and improved models to support their findings. “We could only show that the tsunami was caught and kept moving inside the fjord for nine days after we used special army maps and improved our tsunami models,” Svennevig explained.
To the researchers, the signal served as a wakeup call-similar events may happen with landfalls in other fjords or lakes due to climate change, which could lead to more landfalls and tsunamis in the Arctic. Understanding this event helps scientists learn more about how the Earth is changing due to global warming. There is still much to discover as we face the effects of climate change.

Born in 1998 in Yichun, Heilongjiang province, Jiang Yufan was influenced by the strong festive atmosphere in her hometown, where red lanterns hang everywhere.
As a junior student at the Jilin University of Arts then, Jiang said her original design was a deer, but she later discovered that many of her peers were also using deer in their designs. Once I told someone I wanted to get a master’s degree of fine arts in creative writing and they told me it was the second-to-worst post-graduation plan they’d ever heard from a student. Arts degrees — especially fine arts degrees, which usually come in the form of music, studio art, creative writing and theater — have been, over the years, labeled useless.
It’s true that for the most part, STEM degrees lead to higher paying jobs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it’s understandable why young people care about a higher starting salary and financial security. Student loan debt is playing a role in the physical and mental stress of young people.
And while STEM majors usually have starting salaries that are $20,000 higher than those of liberal arts majors, by the time people reach the age of 40, the salaries between those who majored in the liberal arts and those who majored in STEM are virtually the same. For example, women who major in STEM earned nearly 50% more than social science and history majors at ages 23-25, but only 10% more by ages 38-40, a New York Times analysis reported. So even in terms of salary, which doesn’t solely determine whether or not a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren’t all that far behind STEM.
It seems too that since people nowadays are going to have to work longer, it’s more important than ever that we actually like and care about what we’re doing. Pursuing something enjoyable, or else a passion, is continuously found to be a key factor in maintaining healthy relationships, mental health, physical health and energy. In other words, not useless.
Art is also a method of communication. It allows people from different backgrounds, from different walks of life to communicate with each other. In a world where borders and division seem to be all over the place, we need art more than ever. We need liberal arts majors. And more than anything, we need to be able to pursue what we love with confidence, and we need to not get caught up in the ”usefulness“ of what we love.
And just because someone’s primary job isn’t in their field of study — a writer who teaches high school for example — doesn’t make the degree useless. It just means that their way of finding a stable income is different. The same goes for artists who have to work multiple jobs to support themselves. As the designer of a Paralympic mascot of 2022 Beijing Olympics, Jiang Yufan has experienced the most unforgettable life for the past four years. 11
Born in 1998 in Yichun, Heilongjiang province, Jiang Yufan was influenced by the strong festive atmosphere in her hometown, where red lanterns hang everywhere.
As a junior student at the Jilin University of Arts then, Jiang said her original design was a deer, but she later discovered that many of her peers were also using deer in their designs. So she changed it and drew a Chinese knot and a dumpling instead. 12 Then Jiang revised her design again, and in 2018 she submitted the first draft of her now winning entry — a Chinese knot and a red lantern — both referring to Chinese culture.
Then the process of revising and improving it was demanding. One difficulty was how to make a lantern look more alive. Ideas to add antlers and wings to the lantern failed to satisfy either the designer or her team. Finally, they decided to make the lantern patterned, adding doves and the outline of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. 13 Additionally, the team added a splash of snow across Shuey Rhon Rhon’s face to make its eyes stand out. And the area around the Olympic emblem is able to glow.
