Esther Wang appeared just hours after the rescue operation to find her was called off for the night. Wang got separated from her hiking group on a trail at Golden Ears Park in British Columbia at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), about 54 hours after she went missing, the 16-year-old girl showed up from the densely forested and mountainous area at around 9:30 p.m. on June 29, walking out on the very same path she had been traveling.
Sixteen teams were involved in the search from across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland up to the Sea-to-Sky corridor, "She is fine, just extremely tired and sore, bitten by mosquitoes." RCMP leader Keith Schendel told City News. "So she is going to be taking some time to rest. Her parents had been there from the day's rescue efforts and she walked pretty much right into their arms."
According to the letter sent by the girl to CTV News, Wang was filled with hopelessness and fear, but she knew she couldn't give up. She wrote that she suddenly slipped and hit her head on some rocks at one point and lost her phone during the terrifying situation. She managed to get to a river and then followed the stream to a gravel path which took her to Hiker's Beach.
But things started to slowly take a turn for the worse until it got better. "I began to feel dizzy, and I started to imagine things in front of me when there clearly wasn't anyone around me," she wrote in her letter. "I continued to encourage myself to keep moving forward and not to give up yet. It was around 9:15 p.m. when the gravel road ended at the Gold Creek parking lot, and I could see some people in the distance. I waved and immediately, I recognized my parents and I tried to run towards them." Wang was reunited with her family following a health assessment.
36. What do we know about the girl from Schendel's words
A. She had no serious injuries. B. She was suffering emotionally.
C. She recovered physically soon. D. She was grateful to the rescuers.
37 What caused the girl's terrifying situation according to the text
A. Her carelessness. B. Her sudden accident.
C. Her physical weakness. D. Her poor sense of direction.
38. What did the girl mainly describe in her letter to CTV News
A. How she felt after becoming lost. B. How she was helped when in horror.
C. How she managed to return to safety. D. How she was separated from her group.

Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (與……重疊) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (給……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. “Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills for everyone — not just those with low EI — would benefit everyone.”
39. What surprised the researchers most during MacCann’s study
A. Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B. EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C. College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D Personality affected academic performance greatly.
40. What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph
A. Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B. Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C. Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D. Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
41. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Should EI be taught in school
B. How can students develop high EI
C. Students with high EI do better in school
D. Good students do better in managing emotions
C
Do you ever hear a friend speak on a topic with the belief that “everyone” thinks the same way Do you often find yourself surrounded in a social media feed that is completely tailored (訂做的) to you and your beliefs, reading along without the immediate realization
A social media echo chamber (社交媒體回音室) is when one experiences a tailored media information that leaves out opposing viewpoints and differing voices. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube connect groups of like-minded users together based on shared content preferences. As a result, people see and take in information according to our preexisting beliefs and opinions. Social media companies therefore rely on algorithms (算法) to assess our interests and flood us with information that will keep our attention. The algorithms focus on what we “like”, and “share” to keep feeding content that makes us comfortable.
In order to truly get access to all information and to evaluate our media, we must give ourselves the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone. While this becomes increasingly challenging, there are things we can do. The first step is to beef up your media sources. Adding in a few media sources with different opinions will allow you to at least understand what people are saying outside of your echo chamber. Next, read each thing you see with a critical eye. Make sure that each thing you accept as truth is truly fact. Lastly, attempt to search out reliable new sources that are known for trying their best to leave out false information.
By accepting that our media buffet (自助餐) on social media is a product of our present beliefs and opinions, we can work to make sure we are not simply stuck in a social media echo chamber.
42. What is a result of the social media echo chamber
A. People keep reading for more differing viewpoints.
B. People contact like-minded online users effectively.
C. People rely on algorithms to evaluate their interests.
D. People only get information confirming their beliefs.
43. What does the phrase “beef up” underlined in paragraph 3 mean
A. Track. B. Identify.
C. Improve. D. Provide.
44. Which of the following can help us get out of the echo chamber
A. Exposing ourselves to opposing voices.
B. Criticizing all the things on social media.
C. Accepting our present beliefs and opinions.
D. Researching primary sources of information.
45. What is the purpose of the text
A. To call on people to use algorithms frequently.
B. To ask people not to take in information blindly.
C. To promote the use of various social media sites.
D. To inform people of new technology developments.

A team of researchers at ETH Zurich has the perfect long-lasting solution to our fog problem. They have developed a very thin and gold-based transparent coating (涂層) that can convert sunlight into heat, which can be applied to glass and other surfaces to prevent them from fogging.
The special coating is developed using titanium oxide and gold particles. It selectively absorbs infrared radiations (紅外線照射) from the sunlight and creates a heating effect that is powerful enough to keep fog away from the surface of an object. The coating basically employs heat to stop fogging. The coating absorbs a large part of the infrared radiation, which causes it to heat up-by up to 8℃.
Previously, products like anti-fogging sprays create a very thin film of water on the surface to remove fog. The problem with such surfaces is pollution. Along with water, the sprays also attract dirt, dust, oil, and various other dirty substances, and just a little dirt on the surface makes it useless. However, the new coating repels (排斥) water. Furthermore, the coating is significantly thinner, which makes it more transparent as well as flexible. It is heated passively and requires, during daytime, no additional energy source.
Gold might be expensive, but the researchers stress that their coating requires so little that the material costs remain low. Their coating is produced with standardized and readily scalable methods, all cost-effectively. However, although this product can work at very low levels of solar irradiation, it does rely on a certain amount of light.
The researchers will develop the coating further for other applications. In the process, they will examine whether other metals work just as well as gold. There is no need to fear. However, this would cause a car or a building to heat up more in the summer. The researchers have already filed a patent. Hopefully, this groundbreaking product will soon be available on the market.
46. How does the new coating work to remove fog
A. By reflecting part of sunlight selectively.
B. By keeping cool air away from the object.
C. By creating a thin film of water on the surface.
D. By absorbing infrared radiations to heat the coating.
47. Why does the author mention previous anti-fogging products
A. To stress the advantages of the new coating.
B. To introduce the inspiration behind the new coating.
C. To prove the difficulty of creating anti-fogging products.
D. To explain the reason for the anti-fogging coating being popular .
48. What is the limitation of the new coating
A. It is considerably expensive.
B. It depends on sunlight to work.
C. It takes too much time to produce.
D. It is difficult to clean and maintain.
49. What do the researchers plan to do next
A. Apply for a patent for the invention.
B Develop the product for more practical uses.
C. Explore the environmental impact of the coating.
D. Seek a cheaper material as an alternative to gold.
