so… that…是一個常見的句式結構,表示“如此……以至于……”, 副詞so之后接形容詞或副詞,that引導一個完整的句子,有時that還可省略。
例如本單元的這個句子:
That bird’s song is so beautiful that we would follow it.
One year, the weather was so dry that no food would grow. 有一年,天氣太干旱了,以至于糧食顆粒不長。
The wife told her husband that unless he left the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die. 妻子告訴丈夫,如果他不把孩子們扔到森林里讓他們自生自滅,整個家庭就會滅亡。
1)unless的意思是“如果不,若非,除非”,它引導的是一個條件狀語從句,相當于if…not。
因此,上面的句子改寫為:
…if he didn’t leave the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die.
2)whole形容詞,意為“全部的:整體的”。
I told him the whole story.我把整個故事告訴了他。

感嘆句的語序:
how和what與被修飾詞放在句首,其它部分用陳述句語序。

(2) What+名詞+主語+謂語!

(3)在口語中,感嘆句中的主語和謂語經常略去不說。

we thought…表示人們對過去的某種想法,判斷等,可以譯作“我們原想……; 我們本以為……”。如:
I thought he would come, but he didn’t.
We thought you were never coming back.
我以為你們再也回不來了。
As soon as you wake up,you must go to the forest with your father.
as soon as意為“一......就......;盡快”,引導時間狀語從句。
如:As soon as I get to Beijing,I'll write to you.我一到北京,就給你寫信。
I gave the alarm as soon as I saw the smoke.
我一看見冒煙,就發出了警報。
I' drop pieces of bread.我會撒點面包屑。

1)piece可數名詞,意為“片;塊;段”,其復數形式為pieces.a piece of意為“一片;一塊;一段”,用來修飾不可數名詞,表達數量。a piece of bread一片面包a piece of meat一塊肉

2)“基數詞(>1)+pieces of+不可數名詞”作主語時,謂語動詞用復數形式。
Three pieces of bread are enough for me.對我來說,三片面包足夠了。
Unless we do,we won't find our way out.如果我們不這么做,我們就找不到出去的路。

1)find one's way out 意為“找到出路”。
I can't find my way out of the building.我找不到出大樓的路。
find out意為“弄清楚;查明”,通常有“經歷曲折”的含義。
You'd better smell the tofu to find out whether it has gone bad.你最好聞一下這塊豆腐,看看它是不是已經壞了。

3)此句中made of bread, cake and sugar作定語,修飾名詞house, 形容詞wonderful也是house的定語。在英語中,大部分形容詞作定語修飾名詞時應前置,短語或句子作定語修飾名詞時則后置。
a. be made of表示制成成品的制作過程僅發生物理變化,可看出原材料,保留原材料的質和形。

b. be made from表示制成的東西的原材料在制作過程中發生化學變化,完全失去原材料的外形或特征, 或成品已無法辨認出原材料。
