在美國, “I have a family ”是一句意義重大的話。對絕大部分父母來說,個人的職業成功不能置于家庭之上。

“基于平等的愛”是主流的家庭觀念。孩子無論大小,都被當作獨立的個體對待,有選擇的自由和權利。

父母重在引導,但不干涉孩子的具體選擇。
雖然很多孩子上大學時就離開父母,開始獨立生活,但是彼此之間的關心卻依然如舊。

父母撫養孩子的樂趣是從人道的角度看著另外 一個生命的成長,所以美國人收養孤兒的人特別多,白人領養亞洲人的孩子或黑人的孩子也很多。
